The general order is wah then guitar followed by distortion or overdrive then any modulation like chorus and then time based stuff like delay last . Compressers go first. You can try anything you like though. My setup is:

      guitar
      rmc3 wah
      big muff
      lovetone ? flanger
      tzf flanger
      ibanez ad-9 delay

I might ask him on Friday anyway but ask if he has had a chance to mess around with the TZF we bought him and what he thinks of it. also curious if the White Plexi and sparkle esquire are toast from the fire.

I don’t have the song with me but when I get the chance I will transcribe it. Listening to J for 12 years I can pick up on most of the Lyrics or at least better than that one.

You have to be kidding us. Bug is a masterpiece of guitar texturing. There are things he did on that album that he hasn’t done since except maybe alone or More Light. Don’t is one of the best guitar solos I have ever heard so I really don’t know what smoke your cracking, but if you are for real I can see that you have no taste being that you compare without a sound with creed and linkin park. I wish you would burn your dino albums and go listen to evansense. J is not Steve Vai the brilliance of the music is how he layers and textures different melodies and harmonies. He plays the same basic formations on the guitar sometimes using a capo to change the key. There is no mystery to the technique it is the beauty in the furry that is the essence of Dinosaur Jr. Without a Sound lacked this ferocity and in that created movement with the space in between which is what I love about it but feel the pain is a throw away in my book. Feel the pain is one of J’s worst songs and shows little technical guitar proficiancy. I learned to play that on a guitar when I was 17 and could barely play from a magazine, yet I still haven’t figured out most of bug because of the layers. Now there are some old fans who stopped listening to Dino around Green Mind because Lou left and the songs became more popy. I love the new stuff but you have to understand the context. Oh and I agree with anthony, buy the vinyl and crank it up louder. Anyway I hope this was a joke and that there aren’t people who listen and compare Dino with Linkin Park and Creed. Music is subjective so listen to whatever you want I don’t care I am just in shock that you have such varied taste. Also ever listen to Dinosaur, now that album sucked. I would admit J coudn’t play guitar as well as he can now what some 16 years later, but it just sucked. A couple songs were cool and we still hear them but compared to Creed an over produced money machine it sounds horrible, yet the songs are still better songs than can I take you higher, to a place where blind men see.

I saw Murph play with Don Fleming at a small bar in NYC opening for Bebe Buel, Liv Tyler’s Mom. Its a small world, they are all friends. Like Murph is friends with Evan Dando and he is friends with Liv.

When J did the Stooges shows the first time around I talked to him and I had a Roger Mayer Vision Wah because it had 4 dip switches and two knobs. J said he thought they were crap and showed me his new wah which was an RMC3 that you can open and change like 20 settings and told me to get one. I did and Teese said he specially moddified a wah for J, I asked if I could have one like it and he said nope but I’m happy with the RMC3, my friend had an RMC2 but didn’t like it and got a picture wah. Now there is the wizard wah

I think a full reunion is out but who cares, George plays better than Murph in my opinion and anybody can play the bass. I guess it would be cool for a sentimental type thing but than again I never saw them play with Lou (only on video and tapes) so I don’t miss anything. The early recordings are classic but the early shows sounded like crap. I mean it was an experience and something different and loud as hell but I think most of us would have thought they sucked and never thought twice about them if we were at some frat party or something hearing them play in 87.

Go to http://www.harmony-central.com in the discussion forums under effects. You can talk to tons of effects enthusiasts and pedal makers and get hints tips and advice for some of the best pedal makers like Zachery Vex who makes about 6 of the pedals J uses.

It was nasty with Lou, J hit him with his guitar because Lou was making lots of feedback with his bass. J and Murph said the band was broken up to Lou and than got right back together and than J signed with Warner. Murph and J broke up because Murph couldn’t play drums as funky as he could and the music was changing from the earlier more straightforward stuff. I hung out backstage the night they played together for the first time in 7 years (J and Murph) and although there were no hard feelings they definately weren’t buddy buddy. Lou recently came onstage and sang with J for the Stooges stuff and they talked and I think reconciled a bit, either way it would have been nice if Dino was more of a band, all collaberating like the early stuff but Green Mind and Where You Been and so on still rocked and I like it more than Sebadoh or anything Lou or Murph have since done.

I arrived at the show a little early and hung out downstairs. Valentines is pretty cool I had never been there before. Anyway the show began. the opening band was ok kind of funk rock stoner band. I saw J come in. I gave him the pedal and said it was from the people at freakscene. He just kind of stared at me. So I told him what the pedal was and that he should use a fuzz in front of it and that I hope he likes it and uses it in NY. He said he would check it out and said thanks. J was using his purple Jazzmaster with stickers. He also had two other Jazzmasters. I think they may have been reissues because one was the color pink that the reissues are, but I am not sure. He had one full stack with the purple head (hope the white one is allright) and a spare head. He had a small rack with pedals probably half his usuall setup. No fender amp for a moniter either. The bass had a half stack and the Dino bass (black Jazz bass Mike used) and George had his drum set not the clear blue set he usually uses. Anyway they played really well for the first show. I was suprised how many songs Matt new. I requested Just Like Heavan and he said "I can probably fake that" they playyed it amazing with him singing "you" on the hard parts. I was affraid J might forget the pedal but he thanked freakscene right before playing a great rendition of Freakscene. Overall a great show and I am excited for the city show.
