I don’t think all of the lyrics are right. I don’t think J sat down and wrote out all the songs for the Japanese version. I rember having the wagon from Japan and they didn’t get all the lyrics right but it is pretty close.

Dean Markely makes guitar strings not pedal, new balance is a sneaker company but J has recently been wearing the same sneakers I have purple and green adidas, george berz has been the drummer live for about five years, watt is mike watt, monster cables are the guitar cables he uses check out their website for pics of J. Noel Ford did the sound for J a bunch of times and is the soundman at continental in NYC, Geoffrey Teese makes J’s wah wah pedal, Zildjin makes drum cymbols and thats all I know

Hey guys, glad i could be of help…

Wasn’t quite sure wether people would be genuinely interested or just think i was trying to show off….

It’s a great album, i’ve been listening to it constantly on my headphones which doesn’t truly do it justice – like any j record it needs to be on the hi-fi played LOUD!

Can’t wait to hear the live interpretations!

                  10. Outside

A tricky one this, i’m still a little unsure of it. I think it’s a good song in it’s own right but not sure if i like it as an album closer… was kinda looking forward to an all-out blow-out in the vein of More Light.

It’s a pretty standard mid-paced song, in the latter-period Dino style. Great lyrics though, back with the freedom theme:

"I’ve been away to long, i’ve been free, on the other side.
Everything turned out wrong, wait till the evening, i won’t know where to hide."

It’s got a real nice middle-8, with the line:
"Where you going baby, i think we’ve been this way too long," before launching into a solo of suitable virtuosity.

Don’t get me wrong it’s got a great catchy riff, but it kinda ends the album on a downer (tone-wise) rather than the almighty explosion of More Light and compared to the quality of songs that have come before it Outside is a bit of an anti-climax.

                    9. Say The Word

Again, noticeably missing the freedom lyrical theme this is a wierd one – part stop-start bouncy riffing (similar to I’m Insane off Hand It Over) and part all-out soloing.

First verse comes in over a simple repetitive riff, with repetitive – almost playful – lyrics where the ‘people’ / ‘darling’ words are accentuated and clipped making it almost jaunty!

"Say the word, say the word people, say the word.
Have you heard, it’s a blur people, have you heard.
Please believe, be there for me people, please believe.
I’m going away, i’d like to stay darling, i’m going away,
it’s not the time, just look inside people, it’s not the time…"

Then launches into a massive distorted 2min solo that’s a close cousin to the Get Out Of This solo version (on the Feel The Pain single), before fading to a standstill and the verse starting back up – almost like it’s 2 seperate songs melded together.

Odd but great, one of my faves.

                      8. Everybody Lets Me Down

The single, starting off with J’s voice over some electric piano (?) before bass, drums and guitars come flooding in:

"Every guy walks down my street, any girl they care to meet, I know there’s something out there.
Anytime it seemed ok, had to wreck it couldn’t wait, i know there’s something better, oh no"

into the chorus with an added fuzz guitar riff, and ethereal backing vocals (in brackets):
"Everybody Lets Me Down (down, down), all this time i never found,
Everybody Lets Me Down, I go outside and look around, I never quite on the fell on the ground"

The third verse is stripped back down to voice and piano (with added highhat) before kicking back in with an immense solo leading into the chorus.

It’s a slacker anthem a la Freakscene! J’s laid back lyrics backed with a breezy tune, electric playing and urgent drumming.

So many questions, so little time….

Flying Cloud, i’m gonna fill in the last 3 tracks a little later (hopefully this p.m.)…

I’ve got an advance promo copy which means it’s the one that journos will be getting. It’s a proper artworked cd in a cardboard sleeve – therefore i only have the disc, front and back cover artwork which doesn’t have any info on collaborations or credits etc. I’m hoping for some more info shortly, i think the press release is being put together soon.

Hope that fills in some of the gaps for y’all…

Also, looks like Mr Mascis might be playing in London on 13th Sept.

                        More soon….

                          It’s not pathetic Carl…..
It may seem to be but it’ll all be worth it once you hear the lp!

Thanks for the advice Allison, i’d def. recommend 1st single Everybody Let’s Me Down too – that’s the track that’s growing on me the most at the moment…

                            7. Someone Said

Or, as it should have been called, "Someone Said my freedom’s gone".

Another slow paced one this, with lots of fuzzy guitar droning and a bit of the synth-flute type sound that J likes to throw in occasionally.

Built around the "Someone said…" chorus it’s one of those maddeningly repetitive Mascis slowies in the vein of Not The Same (from Where You Been).

Good but not great, a bit of a filler…

                              6. Tell The Truth

A great, straight-ahead stomper of a tune. Kicking off with a quiet riff over a brutal drumbeat before kicking in with a great hook-filled verse and the simple-yet-strong chorus:

"Tell the truth, you gotta be, cos i know God (?) and that’s just crazy."

Great stop-start riffage and lots of variations in the guitar score, it goes into a mental solo that’s trademark Mascis and a then great squalling feedback crescendo before the final chorus.

                                5. Free So Free

Back to the freedom theme – "And I wanted to be there in the end, and i wanna be free so free, to know it" – and, if Bobbin (track 4) is a return to earlier You’re Living Me-era Dino this is definitely late-period, a kinda plodding ballad w/ high-pitched vocals a la Alone. It’s almost 6mins long too…

The one thing that does make it stand out is the first solo (at the 3min mark) which is done on an ACOUSTIC!
A CLEAN acoustic over a fuzz backing!
It shows off J’s geetar skills effortlessly but isn’t one of the better tracks on offer here.

                                  4. Bobbin’

It’s the first track so far that doesn’t appear to have the ‘freedom’ theme running thru it so obviously…

Starts off with a bass rumble before moving into a laconic "awwwwww, give me some will" line that’s typical J moving into a ripping Furry Things-era guitar break as the drums kick in.

Beefs up the guitars in the middle eight before continuing the verse with extra lead lines building up with double-tracked vocal harmonies (a bit beach boys run at the sun style).

On the final verse strips it all down to start with guitar and voice, then guita-voice-lead, then guitar-voice-lead-drums before exploding into some serious guitar wigging for the finale!

                                  One of my favourite tracks!
