Sorry to take so long, my musings will continue this afternoon – my computer went down over the weekend – i can safely say that i’ve been listening to NOTHING else over the past few days!
Wow, this is great – it feels like i’ve got my own little regular column…..
3. Set Us Free
Typical J: a great, mid paced belter of a song. The lyrics are continuing the freedom theme again and there are some great J guitar moments in there.
You get the feeling he can pull these sort of songs out in his sleep – album filler, but excellent nonetheless….
2. If That’s How It’s Gotta Be
Typical Mascis song title – this opens with a beautiful little acoustic picked riff:
"Said my freedom, said please stay, said I’m waiting, I must say, and i ran away from living, thought i wanted it that way, every step i should be giving, but i’m stuck feeling this pain, that’s how it’s gotta be.."
backed by simple strummed acoustic and a bit of shimmering reverbed guitar it’s all pretty mellow, relaxed stuff – showing that J has picked up a few new tricks on the acoustic tours!
Then, just when you think J has got thru the whole song without breaking out the distortion pedal, he rips into a killer solo at the close.
Awesome!
1. Freedom
Starts with a hypnotic fat riff over a straight drum beat before going into a funky, staccato, jagged guitar riff it’s nearly a minute before the vocals start.
"Can you find a space for me, i’m just waiting to be free, say it’s freedom"
Sounds great, quite stark, without the usual biggmuffsuperfuzzguitarlicks. It’s got a chorus that firmly lodges itself in your brain with the repetitious "it’s freedom" line.
A great way to kick off the new album!
gotta be the ‘feel the pain’ vid, surely? not the best dino song but waaaaaay ahead in the video stakes…
j and mike scooting round in a golf buggy?
ace!…yeah i’d like to think it’ll be a pretty cool mix.
Damn though, i’m annoyed with myself for not asking if there were any guests (a la Bob pollard or Kevin Shields) on the new record – guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
i’m hoping to get a copy in a coupla weeks – more news soon!
So, literally 30 minutes ago the very lovely Wyndam from City Slang wandered in and told me that he’s been playing the J album all day whilst he’s been driving around and that it sounds awesome turned up loud in the car.
He suggested the freedom theme was due to J’s recent trips to India and the whole Amma thing as well.
He said that the record picks up where More Lght left off but with better production and some real killer songs…. He said don’t be fooled by the similar sounding songtitles, and that it was a real diverse record…
I can’t wait!I rember reading that Where You Been sold like 250,000 copies. That was his biggest selling album. When I talked to his old manager he said that they still sell like a thousand old albums a week. If that were true he would have sold another 200,000 old albums by now because that was 4 years ago now. I don’t think J has sold over a half a million records combined but maybe. Even if not at least one out of every hundred people in America have one of his album.
Tiffany Anders should be playing with her band too. At least thats what her drummer said when she opened up for the Beachwood Sparks last weekend.
J doesn’t use a mustang bridge. He uses a Gibson tune-o-matic brigde. I believe they are relatively close in size but a little work may need to be done.
Yea J’s edge must not be that straight the time I saw him trip on the stage and spill wiskey all over the place.
ALLISON THE LINK YOU POSTED WAS FOR THE RMC2, J has an RMC3. The RMC2 is great I have used it often but the RMC3 provides a much greater ability to tweak the effect.
Oh and a Real McCoy III Wah, how can I forget J recomended it to me
