Funnily enough I bought Sonic Youths Dirty today as well, as one of the records seems to have disappeared when I recently moved from Berlin to Hamburg. Got it now on CD of course, yet the irritating detail is, that the record that got lost was the one with the vinyl bonus track on it. Oh, just my luck. But Stalker was never one of my favourites. Guess we have to be grateful for small mercies.
I also got my hands on the new Compilation from the Düsseldorfer Unique Club (you simply have to go there, if you are anywhere near) aptly titled New Testament of Funk 2001. Not quite as good as NTOF 2000 but coming close. Probably a grower. It´s mostly clubtunes with references to Mambo, Boogaloo, Soul, Funk, Bossa Nova, stuff like that, but always a bit tongue in cheek and still so groovy. Well, I don´t know most of the artists featured on there and since most of them are at least partly German, I wont bore you with the details. However, should you ever come across the New Testament Of Funk series I urge you to give it a listen. And you can virtually visit the club on http://www.unique-club.de.
The third CD I bought was 3rd perspective from United Future Generation (from 96) a Japanese threesome, who mix Jazz, Filmmusic, Bossa Nova (again, I´m afraid), Space Age Bachelor Pad music with a modern beat. Dance away. I reckon 3rd Perspective is their best CD, so if that sounds good to you give it a listen. Really uplifting.
So great to have time again to do a bit of recordshopping and surf the internet.

I´m a bit of a Legasteniker (as we say here in Germany) myself. Bad at spelling and all that. One of the reasons I studied art. Not much reading really and even less writing. Had to buy a bit of paint here and there of course.

dHi there RR
well, since you´re from Brazil, could you tell me if you can get records from Roberto Menescal in your lovely part of the world. As my understanding of it he recorded and released most of his work in Brazil and for years now I´m desperatly trying to find some stuff of his, alas to no avail so far. But that might be cause he is rather unknown over here, but I guess he must be bit of a celebrity in Brazil. Shed some light there please.

dAre you sure Albini was the sound engineer on Hold that Tiger. The sound is pretty awful, not to say unlistenable. Yeah I forgot about the Kim Gordons Panties song. Pretty funny how he fools around with "Schizophrenia", which -by the way- is my favourite tune from Sonic Youth.

dI´m still not sure if calling your band Rapeman is such a brilliant idea. If you want to provoke some reaction you can do it in more subtle ways. Anyway, Rapeman is a Japanese character from a comicbook who, as a form of punishment, rapes his mainly female victims, and thus (because he is the hero) rape is excused. Now, when Rapeman toured England, some gigs were canceled due to strong feminist activities at some venues. Which is rather childish, but then you´re virtually asking for it if you call your band Rapeman. And I still don´t know if there is an excuse for producing Page and Plant.
Shellac played a gig once with Stereolab here in Berlin at the Volksbühne. Pretty strange combination.
Also, there is this semi official Live album from Sonic Youth and before they play the first encore, Thurston Moore shouts something like: We´re Sonic Youth and you´re Steve Albini and then launch into a rendition of the Ramones´ Loudmouth, so from that I gathered that they are not too chummy. Does anyone know why?

It wasn´t only the sensless We are mods, we are mods we are, we are, we are mods topic; what about the "One of these things actually happened to me today". Pretty pointless if you ask me. Still, didn´t mean to offend anyone.

dActually, the TV Personalities (them of Part Time Punks fame) once recorded a 7inch single called I was a mod before you was a mod. Quite funny.
Also on the inner sleeve of the Worst of the Hard Ons compilation, there is an ad from some Aussie magazine were someone wanted to become a mod, although it was apparent from the ad (she asked for advice what to do) that she had no idea whatsoever what being a mod is all about. Pretty hilarious.

dwell, guess they are alternative then.

dI have to admit that I havent heard much of it yet and the bits I´ve heard were really what you would expect. For me Pavement peaked with Crooked Rain and although the things they recorded after that were kind of ok, in my view they weren´t going to save indie rock as I thought they would when Slanted and enchanted came out. So I lost interest to some degree. Plus, the last time I saw Pavement live (two years ago) I was really pissed off by their refusal to talk to the audience. I mean, you don´t have to go for the "Hey Germany, do you wanna Rocknroll!" approach, but to ignore the crowd completly was just so rude. It was a rather lacklustre affair, no verve left and it really seemed that it was time to call it a day. However, I´m not too keen on people, leaving perfectly good bands to take the singer/songwriter careeroption. But yeah, if it´s any good, I sure will give it a listen.

Hey Salamiguy
getting desperate to find new topics?!
Just kidding.
But I can only talk about the things I got wrong myself. I might warn you that this is really boring. In the wedding presents "Everyone can make a mistake", I always thought that David was singing:"A little bit of what your fancy goes into any girl at all, I know that now." which doesn´t make much sense but sounded good to me all the same. Now (thanks to the internet) I know that he´s actually singing:"A little bit of what you fancy doesn´t do you any good at all, I know that now." which makes more sense, but is not that easy to sing along to.
Oh well, that gives me a perfect excuse to talk about Steve Albini again. Oh by the way, it´s pretty rich of you to point out that I spelt 18th dye wrong when you misspell Albini every single time.
Anyway, Courtney Love and David Gedge (mastermind of the wedding present) bumped into each other on the Reading Festival (that was the year after Kurt Kobains demise) and Courtney slapped David in the face without any warning. Apparently his only crime was that he knew Steve Albini (he produced "Seamonsters"). But that was enough for Courtney. What a sad case.

dOf course we don´t say dey. Don´t be ridiculous. And don´t be so pedantic. I knew it was wrong because it looked wrong, tried various combination, didn´t look right either, went for dey. BUT THE IMPORTANT THING IS, THAT YOU KNEW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT!! Actually Joe Dilworth, the faith healers drummer, (guy, that I see on and off), he was together with PJ Harvey for some time and on Dry there is a song about him. Aptly named, yep, you guessed it: Joe. Joe is very much into East German motorbikes (there is one in the living room, one in the backyard and one out front). In fact I think it´s fair to say that it´s one of his obsessions. Apparently Polly was so sick of listening to his twaddle about MZs (Motorwerke Zokau) that she recorded a whole album with songs about how much she hated Joes Motorbikes, yet the wimps at too pure didn´t thought it would sell very well so it was never released. I would really like to hear it.

It´s so nice to see that someone resurrected my first ever posting that I wrote more than eight months ago. See, that´s what I like so much about this BB. Someone is almost always taking an interest. Despite the fact, that I really can´t say that Dinosaur Jr. is my absolute favorite of all time, I like coming back here and get some new cultural references, gossip and mindless fandom on the rampage. Can you ask for more?!

dCan I contribute some Steve Albini gossip here?!
Years ago I interviewed a Berlin based band called 18th dey and back then they just came back from recording an album with Steve Albini and because it wasn´t that long after Surfer Rosa and back than I was absolutely obsessed with the Pixies, I asked them if Albini had told them anything about how recording with the Pixies was and apparently the only thing he said was:"Kim Deal was a good fuck." Now I found this rather hard to believe, cause whenever he appears in interviews he seems so nice and eloquent. But yeah, someone else told me that he is somewhat of an mysogonist (is that the right spelling?).

I´m with Albini on that.
But let me tell you more about the Pavement /Pumpkins vendetta. Because of this lines in Range Life (which are really harmless I think) the Smashing Pumpkins refused to share the Backstage at the Lolopaloza (or however it is spelled) tour the following year and because they couldn´t really build another backstage, Pavements slot was cancelled as by then the Smashing Pumpkins were more famous. And I think it says a lot about them, that they don´t care about all the people who came to see Pavement, just because they are to fussy when it comes to sharing the backstage with someone who doesn´t like you that much.
Pretentious gits.
