"99% Of Gargoyles Look Like Bob Todd" (half man half biscuit)
well I think that´s quite strange as far as songtitles go.
And while we`re at it, this gives me the prefect oportunity to as you about "Pull the wires from the wall". I give you the complete lyrics:Creeping round my house at dawn
I’ll keep my curtains closed
If you’re feeling fond of feeling wrong
Fully clothedFor a second time you’re on my mind
Planted on this still
You forget I do not pay in kind
Kind’s not thereFor the eyes to see through
All that I doFor instance I don’t have to try
I’m falling over all the right lines
We only have to leave this last
Resist all falling at the wrong timesSafe in knowledge, safe in college
I know all there is to know
To have never stepped outside this ring
Fools they flowFor the self-assured I have no cure
I only wish I was
As my entertaining thoughts grow fewer
Stills my causeFor the eyes to see through
All that I doFor instance I don’t have to try
I’m falling over all the right lines
We only have to leave this last
Resist all falling at the wrong timesFor the accent, for the day (don’t walk just swim)
For the incidents they’ll happen and they’ll happen anyway (it’s gonna pass)
When you leave here, leave this way (one last request)
You are far enough to be impressed
But not so far to be depressed
Drink your souvenirs and go your wayNow, can anyone tell me why this song is called Pull the wires from the wall. Me being German, I see no connection.
danke
d"Creeping round my house at dawn
I keep my curtains closed
If you´re feeling fond of feeling wrong
fully clothed"I really love that, don´t know why really, probably because it´s from the most beautiful song of all time.
Also great:
"Maybe I pretend to see
what you need to make you be"
(th faith healers: everything, all at once forever)And, of course there are so many classics from Half man Half biscuit:
for example:
"There is nothing better in life than writing on the sole of your slipper with a biro"
(The best things in Life)
or
"Mention the Lord of the Rings one more time
And I’ll more than likely kill you."
(Dickie Davis Eyes)
orWell I heard a lovely rumor,
That Bette Midler had a tumorkills me every time

dsalamiguy,
can you hum along to it, being German I´m really bad spotting songs from snipets of lyrics.
It might be "break your face" but I´m not too sure.
Heavenly eventually became Marine Research after Mathew Fletcher (drums) the brother of Amelia (singing/songs/guitar) commited suicide. However, they never ever reached the velocity of Talulah Gosh again.

dYeah, let me explain. Early Stereolab where a bit more like mbv, but the main thing is, that years ago (two years after Loveless) I came across the first album of Rocketship in the recordshop of my choice. No one had heard of rocketship (and I don´t think they´ve ever made it big time) and in order to encourage you to buy it the dealer had writen a little tag and attached it to the record and it said: "Very good, like Boo Radleys and Stereolab", when in fact it was exactly like my bloody valentine (ecstacy period) and I thought it was interesting that my bloody valentine were obviously completely forgotten, while the bands that were influenced by them cited as referencepoints.
I like your list eggwater, after all, there would be no Fall without Beefheart.
gruss
dI think all songtitles from Stereolab are really strange. The more because for me as a non native speaker, they have no relations to the songs (i.e. lyrics) whatsoever.
Some examples
Emperor Tomato Ketchup
Nomus et Phusis
Outer Bongolia
The Brush descends the Length
Refractions in the Plastic Pulse
Contronatura
OLV 26A bit pretentious really. I never know what my favourite songs from stereolab are called (apart from Ping Pong).
Man or Astroman have very strange songtitles as well, but then, they mostly do instrumentals, so there are no lyrics they can relate to.
When Wedding Present put out their first album with titles like Everyone thinks he looks daft and What did your last servant die of? they were questioned about that and argued that these are things that people say everyday, whereas no one says things like Rain on the Sea (back then an albumtiltle by the Stars of Heaven) and since their songs where about everyday life the titles were most appropiate.more later

dI reckon if we don´t view Come on Pilgrim as a proper album, than Surfer Rosa has to be the best debut of all time.
Have to agree with that don´t you?
Come on let´s find some common ground.
Yes and Salamiguy, I want to hear the story about Albini and the Chicken. It´s just really hard to keep track with your postings. Can´t remember, might as I try, where you originally mentioned it.

dHere are mine ( in no order )
1) Ramones, for obvious reasons I think
2) Sonic Youth – 20 years, my ears my ears; do I need to say more and well, look at all the bands who supported them over the years.
3) Pixies, in a way that Kurt said that with Nevermind he basically tried to copy Surfer Rosa. Still the blueprint for the indie scene.
4 Velvet Underground, yesssssss and in their wake the Jesus and Marycahin
5 the Smiths, well I´m not a big fan but there are certainly a lot of bands in Britain who want to be the new Smiths
6 Stooges. I think the whole Scandinavian Rock´n´Roll scene would be unthinkable without the Stooges
7 Talulah Gosh, They invented Indie Pop in 86
8 my bloody Valentine,- now this would take too long to explain, but there would be no Stereolab without my bloody Valentine
9 Blondie- Blueprint for perfect pop and finally
10 the Doors, the blueprint for your common band of wankers. Now the doors are probably the most overrated band of all and if good old Jim hadn´t snuffed it in the seventies they would be completely irrelevant by now, yet that doesn´t stop sad acts like the Cult trying to copy them.
Yes I´m very tolerant and you can love what you like but the Cult are beyond redemption.

dOh yeah, and I should add, that this is a very personal list. Of course I know that the Fall, Joy division, Kraftwerk and the Birthday Party were more influential than Talulah Gosh, but they are so obvious choises. And I blame much of the Crossover bullshit on Faith no More, but this is an influence I could well do without. I only threw in the Doors for good measure .

I´m with you, the Smashing Pumkins are highly overrated. As well as Radiohead, Muse, Korn, Pearl Jam, Metallica. To name just a view. Actually I think Built to spill are overrated and I don´t undestand the Modest Mouse comparison cause I don´t like BtS that much.

dIf you enjoyed Terry Pratchet and Douglas Adams you have to read Red Dwarf by Grant Naylor. it´s basically the same style as Douglas Adams, but they manage to get a plot in as well. I guess it´s a bit more like Monty Python, but yeah, just about the funniest book I ever read.

Jesus, what is this supposed to mean? Do we have to like the debut of Britney spears just because of her career?
And Salamiguy, I liked the first two 12" by Swervedriver, but with Raise they´d already lost it me thinks.I wonder why no one mentioned the debut of the Violent Femmes. Such a classic.
Also Fat Axl by Silverfish
Lido by th Faith Healer
Scarified by the Dirt Merchants (whatever became of them)
and -of course- Domestique by the Delgados.

Have you ever seen MM live? I seriously doubt it cause than you would know that they are the most unpretentious band of all. Anti posers in a way. Second time I saw them they supported Built to Spill and just blew them away. Then did the final encore together. Next time they were headlining and played for nearly three hours. Best gig for ages. Isaak really does something new with the guitar here and there. I always thought of them as a kind of Pixies who like to jam. Having said that, I have to admit that the Moon & Antarctica was a bit of a dissapointment (overproduced and not enough noise) but The lonesome crowded west is a real masterpiece. And you never get sick of it cause the songs are quite complex. Lyrics are good as well.
Can you ask for more?

dSalamiguy,
Did you know, that John Zorn played Sax on the Violent Femmes` Hallowed Ground. Most noticable on Black Girls.
I`ve got to warn you about Torture Garden by Naked City. 8 years ago I taped said record for my sister and she was so impressed, that she used it as a soundtrack for all the short films she´d done so far (back then she was a filmstudent in Cologne), then somehow managed to show them to John Zorn and in the process got involved with the Jewish/avantgarde Jazzscene in New York, made a film about them (Sabbath in Paradise, it´s quite good), moved to New York and is now working on a film about the master himself. Sadly enough good old John is so unreliable and, well, a bit difficult to say the least that filming with him is a real pain in the ass. But everything will be back to normal when the damn thing is finished.
Actually, I´m a bit intimidated by people like John Zorn. Lacking any musical talent whatsoever, I prefer the approach from people like Sonic Youth where they are on this neverending search for the perfect feedback, whereas John Zorn can play anything he likes, being the musical genius that he is. I just like it if you have the feeling that this band or artist play the music because the simply have to, regardless of trends or marketing strategies.

Have you ever witnessed the Hellacopters live? I have to admit, that I went home with mixed feelings. Posing as posing can. Good clean fun, no question about it, but yeah, bit like being in a theme park. The dreaded term "Pubrock" springs to mind. Like the Cramps were neat in 85 -spot on-, but four years later it was just a parody of a parody. Like the Ramones in the late 80s.
Speaking of the Cramps, only yesterday I went to see the uncensored version of "Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! and it´s such a great film. Gotta love it. If it ever comes your way, you have to see it. Rock`n`Roll indeed.

dJust came down to get some more beer out of the fridge. We´re up on the roof with some people, right at the Brandenburger Tor (that´s where the Love Parade is happening) watching the sunset and the crowd and taking it all in. I know, this sounds pretty stupid and contrived but it is really nice and I´m so happy that our studio (where I have to go to work) is right in the middle of the city. If you ever have the chance to join the Love Parade, I urge you to go. It´s such a great event. I have to go back; people are getting thirsty. See you later.
