Well, since On The Road was the main inspiration for doing this trip, I´m kind of grateful to good old Jack and yet I found it slightly irritating how he implied that this free travelling was a male thing while his friend got women pregnant all over the country and that was supposed to be hip. On the same level, I found this laddishness in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas slightly out of order. You know, two buddies who take a lot of drugs and are oh-so-cool that they can take the piss out of everyone. Come on, been there done that, time to grow up.
If you have 38 states to see, I advise you to give Kansas a miss. There is absolutely nothing of interest there as far as I can tell. And if someone on this messageboard is from Kansas, I want your excuse for living there.
But if you ever happen to be in Seattle, go to the Sit`n`Spin. Best place in town and the beer is cheap.
Anyway, so we checked in at this campground at Lake Ontario and the girl at the reception had to type my name and adress into the computer. So I spelled my German name and explained at great length that Strasse is the German word for street to avoid confusion. City was next. I said Berlin, whereupon she asked (Cause then she had to fill in the state), would that be Berlin, New York, as apparently there is a Berlin in New York. And I replied, No it´s Berlin in Germany. And the we moved on to the little box where you had to write in the Country. And the girl asks: So, what country are you from?
OH well, some people.

Actually, I think Jack Kerouacs On the Road is highly overated. Hasn´t anyone noticed that it is full of sexist crap?! And don´t anyone give me that Those-were-the-times bullshit.

dActually, has anyone ever noticed that the (female) singer of linoleum sounds exactly like that bloke from Placebo.
Linnoleum still exist I think. Last year the released a really boring record.

dI wonder if you´ve noticed this, but on every message board there is a guy like antipop, i.e, someone who so desperatly tries to be funny or controversial and always fails miserably. Or is that always the same guy. Antipop, please shed some light here.

well, my favourite book of 2000 was Dead Long Enough by James Hawes. It´s about those 4 guys who go to Dublin on a Birthday spree in order to prove to themselfes how young, whacky and fit they still are (all in their late thirties) and that´s where it all goes terribly wrong. The two other books from Hawes (A white Merc with fins and Rancid Aluminium) are great as well. My favourite book af all time is The male cross dresser support group by Tama Janowitz. I´ve urged everyone I know to read it and it went down a storm with most of them. It was very reassuring to find out that Pamela (the alter ego of Tama in this book) sees herself as a female member of society in exactly the same way as I see myself as a male. Love her for that. Sounds a bit enigmatic, almost sinister, but if you read it you will know what I mean.
I suppose you all read Filth by Irvin Welsh, but just in case you haven´t, it´s a must, almost as good as Maraboo Stork Nightmares. And if you liked The man who mistook….. you should read Great Apes by Will Self. You will find out why fairly early in the proceedings.
Favourite film of 2000 has to be Dancer in the Dark (Lars van Trier) and since I saw U-Turn by Oliver Stone I have a soft spot for Jenifer Lopez (sorry about that), but Christina Ricci is so much better and therefore Buffalo 66 wins hands down.
By the way, favourite five songs that deal with suicide
1) Violent Femmes – Country Death Song
2) Nomeansno – Dead Bob
3) Only Ones – Why don´t you kill yourself
4) Silverfish – A fucking strange way to get attention
5) Spacemen 3 – SuicideThat all for now folks

Kids,
I really don´t know what all the fuss is about. Why anyone should watch something as boring as the superbowl is beyond my grasp. And at a mega event like that you certainly wouldn´t expect Goodspeed you Black Emperor to perform (though that would be quite a laugh). And hey, I reckon Jenny L. would be the first to admit that her recordsales don ´t have anything to do with the music (by the way, I thought The Cell was rather good). There will always be someone like Jenifer Lopez. So you better get used to it.
As for Fred Durst. I think you should be grateful for Limp Biscit to have pulled out of the Big Day Out. I´m sure, that gave the other Bands some extra time on stage and let´s face it, no matter how drab they might have been, Limp Biscit would have been worse.

I just got my hands on some stuff from a Band (well it´s more of a duo really) called No wings fins or fuselage and it´s exellent. Bit like early Dino. Alas the information on the CD is sparse. So does anyone out there know where they are from, if they still exist, if they have any current releases. Thanx

Famine, War, global warming and here we are discussing if so called cool music should be used for daft commercials. Well, Iggy has sold out a long time ago and if I was in a crap indie band struggling to make a living out of my music I wouldn´t turn down 10000 $ from Nike or whatever. And some commercials are quite good. Just saw Unbreakable the other day and was really chuffed, that they had the Pixies´ I´ve been tired on the soundtrack. I know, it´s not an ad, but somehow the same thing.
The only two bands I wouldn´t want to be used for commercials are probably Fugazi and the Dead Kennedys.
All others are cool with me. After all, this is capitalism.

Well, if you don´t know by now, I think Guns´n´Roses are just, well, silly really. Nevertheless, this gives me the opportunity to bring Silverfish to your attention. As you probably don´t know, or care, their first (and best) album was Fat Axl. And this title came about, because some hack from the Melody Maker (R.I.P.) had described Leslie (the singer with Silvefish)in some mean gig review as a fat Axl Rose. Well, the band found this funny enough to name their next record accordingly. And it´s such a gem. Steve Albini was involved to some capacity. Give it a listen.
