Thank you. I’m glad you both like it.
Yeah, the footage is pretty great. I used a lot of stuff from http://www.freesofree.net; various live videos shot by other people. I hope that’s okay.
malkmus, I agree about the syncing with the live show – that it worked beautifully. "Never Bought It" has always been one of my favourite songs, and seeing and hearing J sing it is very cool. I was so thrilled that he peformed it again in 2004, when everybody thought the song had been retired. It seems to me like J really like it, and as if it should have been the first single off Hand It Over, or THE single from that album, since it was played a lot (on TV, radio and in shows) back then, in 1997, but I don’t think it was ever released as single, neither as a commercial single or promo. And there was no video either.
jeremiah, I used Ulead Video Studio 8.0 (PC software) for video editing. I know most people probably use Pinnacle’s video editing software, but I’ve always much prefered Ulead. Ulead Video Studio 7.0 is pretty good. Version 8.0 was released in 2004, and is even better. Last year the lastest version, 9.0, was released. I’m thinking of buying it, perhaps on Ebay. I bet you can find version 8.0 for a good price on Ebay, if you need a very cheap, but good, video editing program for your PC.
September 17, 2005 at 2:43 am in reply to: Frequenze Disturbate Festival Urbino Italy mp3’s??? #112595Is the audio wav file from the show from the same recording source? I mean, was it recorded by the guy who filmed the show? Is the audio file the sound from the DV camera, or another source?
August 23, 2005 at 11:21 pm in reply to: J. Mascis and Friends sing and Chant for AMma album #110981Yeah, I ordered my copy of "J and Friends Sing and Chant For AMMA" CD from Surefire Distribution, through their website (using Paypayl). I received it yesterday. It took about 10 days before it arrived, but I live in Sweden, so I guess it depends on where you are, but if you’ve ordered it, and made an advanced payment through Paypayl, I’m sure it’ll arrive soon.
I love it. I listened to it yesterday while riding my bike. It’s really really good. This is actually like getting a new, real studio album from J, because it’s, well, written and performed by him, and they’re all new, previously unheard/unreleased songs. Very different, yet very J. The album is 44 minutes long.
Too bad it didn’t get a "proper" release. Also, I wonder what year these songs were recorded. I remember reading something about the song "Help Me Amma" in an interview years ago. I think it was around the time of the release of Free So Free when J mentioned this song called "Help Me Amma" that he had written for Amma, and that it was "pretty direct", as he put it.
I don’t see why Jeff and others shouldn’t be allowed to think Dinosaur Jr is too loud. Why would that upset the rest of you? If you didn’t think it was too loud for you, fine. But let others have their own opinions. I don’t think anyone is saying Dinosaur Jr is too loud just to be an ass, or just to criticize the band. I think the "they’re too loud" comment is their honest opinion/feeling/experience of the concert they went to.
I was at the concert in Stockholm last week, August 9, and I think it was WAY TOO LOUD. I love Dinosaur and J.
Dino/J is easily my favourite band/artist ever. I listen to them everyday. But I have to say the concert was too loud. Thank god I wore earplugs. With earplugs, it was okay, or almost okay. I found some good earplugs, which made it possible for me to enjoy the show somewhat. But I did wish they’d be less loud. Even with earplugs, it was too loud, I have to say.So I didn’t enjoy it as much as I could have enjoyed it. I didn’t leave thinking it was a fantastic concert, because of this. The one thing that made the concert only "good" was the much too high volume. Everything else was great: seeing J in front of me, so very close to me, the setlist, everything was great, except the loudness of the music.
Usually, I do love loud, but this was beyond loud. This was more like hell on earth. It was like a-bombs constantly going off inside your ears. It wasn’t fun. Still, seeing the band, and seeing J outside the venue before the concert made it a great night, but it could have been an even better night.
I have a ticket, and was planning to be there, but yesterday I became sick. And today I’m still sick. Hopefully I will recover in the days to come. If I’m feeling good towards the end of the week, I will definitely be there.
I will probably go to Stockholm on August 9 to see them (I live in another Swedish city, about 2 hours car drive from the capital). I’ve never seen J or Dino live before, but I’ve downloaded about every show from freesofree.net, and listen to them all the time, so this will be pretty big for me. If I can make it.
I e-mailed the venue, but they said it isn’t yet 100% official, and therefore tickets are not on sale as of now, but they said it’s almost official, so tickets should be available in the next couple of days.
The song is "Keeblin".
I think it’s originally a B-side on the "Out There" single.
This is a live version, I think.

10. BugI think Free So Free is a lot better than the early Dino albums. It has more emotion, more depth, it’s more of a spiritual ride, whereas the early stuff is more like punk music for kids.
Freedom – great tune, funky, raw, like the lyrics, it’s fast, it’s kind of like a Chili Peppers song. It has hit potential.
If That’s How It’s Gotta Be – very sad, very beautiful. A classic song, imo. One that will stand the test of time. Strong vocal melody.
Set Us Free – really cool garage rock kind of song, it’s like a cousin to "Same Day". Again, I’m amazed with how great the melody is and the whole structure. Really solid song.
Bobbin – short, funny, I like it.
Free So Free – simple yet moving and very… meditative. Again, excellent lyric.
Tell the Truth – just "okay", not bad or anything, but not outstanding.
Someone Said – beautiful music, beautiful lyric, the simplicity really works. Could have done without the noise in the background though. I prefer the live versions.
Everybody Lets Me Down – kind of interesting, kind of weird actually. Took me forever to learn thing song, i mean, to actually remember it. Strange single choice.
Say the Word – Love the verses. Really funky and groovy and all that. Nice structure with the long crazy instrumental solo and then back to the verse.
Outside – complex, which is a great thing because that just means it lasts longer than a song like, say, Get Me, which is totally boring these days.
I just uploaded the gig to blahmusic.myftp.org if that’s okay with everyone? It’s in the "Upload" folder. Name of the new folder is "Live on dutch radio sept 11 2002". It’s one big mp3 file. Very good sound quality, imho. 35 MB. Total lenght: 21:56 (interview + 5 songs).

deepsludge, yeah, there’s something about that Rolling Stone studio in Chicago. You really nail it. Those amp settings. I’ve actually been thinking about how great it would be if J (or anyone of my favourite artists) recorded a whole album in that studio, because that sound is so amazing. As I said, the version of "Blowing It" he recorded in that studio is a little piece of heaven. So wonderful. <img> I thought to myself when I heard that version for the first time that, if I ever got the chance to record an album, I’d like to record it in that RS studio.
</font><blockquote><font>quote:</font><hr><font> Thanks for the conversion lesson.
</font><hr></blockquote><font><img> Well, basically, I just copied all that information from a Frank Black mailing list. A guy named James gave me those instructions last year. And it worked for me, so I just thought I should share it here with you. Even though most of you are probably experts when it comes to that stuff – I mean, converting and ripping, etc. It’s illegal though. <img>

deepsludge… you’re favourite version of "Same Day" is the Rolling Stone version?! <img> But that version doesn’t have any backing vocals! Those backing vocals, either Pollard’s (on the album) or Watt’s (live shows) are fantastic.
However, the Rolling Stone version of "Blowing It" is a lot better than the studio version. The studio version (Green Mind version) is of course excellent but the RS version is my favourite version.
Btw… I’ve seen some setlists, J-penned setlists, where "Blowing It" is called "Blowing Me". How come?
djm409… J’s acoustic show at the Underworld in London (September 2000) is available here:
http://www.virtuetv.com/music/concerts/jaymascis/index.html#You can watch the whole show (73 minutes or so) by clicking on the link CLICK HERE under "Watch the Broadcast". It’s a real audio stream and it’s bloody good. <img> Perfect picture and sound quality.
Even though I’m no tech-head I managed to download that file (155 MB), using a program called Stream box. Then I used Stream box Ripper to convert the real audio file to MP3. Then I burned that big MP3 file (which contained the whole show) to a CD.You can download Stream Box here:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_software/audio_tools/streambox_vcr.cfm
select the vcr.exe program from where you installed it — this will stop it having to do online checks. Run vcr.exe and fill in some
random crap at the start. Now when you want to download a RealMedia file, copy the URL (address) and click on the + icon (second from left, near the top) in StreamBox. If you’re lucky, it’ll download right away, but quite often you have to get techy and dig out the address yourself, which can be very awkward and annoying — they often try to generate them from Javascript and stuff, so you can’t read the
proper address. One tip: if you do a download that only produces a very small .rm or .ram file, try opening it in NotePad, and you’ll often find an
address like the one below. Anyway, for this gig, select this and copy it:
http://www.virtuetv.com/music/concerts/jaymascis/index.html#… then click on the + icon in StreamBox — it should start downloading.
Note that the times it gives (eg. 15 hours) are a load of crap, but it is a very large file. It also "times out" a lot. If you see a message in
the Status box saying something like "Attempts passed", quit StreamBox and run it again — ot should start re-downloading from where it left off…
note also that it downloads to the Received folder within StreamBox’s own folder by default — you can change this in the View menu’s Settings
option…I think you can download Stream box Ripper (the program that lets you convert real audio files to MP3) here:

deepsludge, that’s funny….I read the lyrics here on this site, and according to whoever put them up it’s "I got pissed but it’s God who gave me this". Click on "Band info" and then "lyrics" and "Sameday" to see for yourself.
So, I figured those are the "offical" lyrics. I couldn’t make out the lyrics myself. That was why I searched for them on this site.
Also, I searched the archive and found out that, in Feb. last year, this guy named toddo posted all the lyrics to More Light. He said: "i have the complete lyrics for the whole album more light…it is a special edition from japan"
Well, here’s the offical "Same Day" lyric, according to him:
SAMEDAY
i woke up suddenly you’re the one i love
it’s the sameday, it’s the sameday
i got pissed but it’s god who gave me this
on the sameday it’s the samedayBetter be grateful son
its you who wanted my life
here’s what you asked for
do your best don’t mess with my life*dreamed a picture sent to me
couldn’t hold it that was my life
its sad, it’s sad to know you’re colder
piece together you and me
the gift means everything to my life
be glad that no one told you
rain on now that was my life
bring them where they ought to be
make a pile and call it my lifelock the door and hit the floor groan that was my life
now look at everything it’s beutiful that’s my lifeall a dream you can tell me what i mean
it’s the sameday it’s the sameday
judgements off gotta go with my first thought
on the sameday it’s the sameday*repeat
Here’s the link for you: http://www.freakscene.net/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=000046
Btw, I too have that Underworld show on CD. It’s really magnificent. I actually burned myself a copy of that show just last week. I’ve been listening to it pretty much everyday.
Can I ask you a question about that show…I’m not an expert on guitars or guitarplaying, so I’m wondering…how does J shift from "normal" acoustic guitar sound to that amplified sound, that electric hard sound? I know, I sound like an idiot here but I have to ask, you know. Is there a guy backstage who helps him out or what? <img> Or does J do it with his foot?
Anyway, J’s so funny in that show. "Play a song" <img>
