Those early cassettes are great and about as hard to find as an eskimo in the desert.I think I should`ve too.It was 1997 and they were still available. Some of them were compiled into collections like Ghana.

This whole thing reminds me of a line from Southwood Plantation Road by The Mountain Goats
Our conversations are like minefields, no one’s found a safe way through one yet
The first time I heard the Mountain Goats I ordered a catalog from Shrimper Records.Did`nt order a thing though

Mountain-Theme For An Imaginary Western
Mountain-Theme For An Imaginary Western
Rolling Stones-Beggar`s Banquet and Let It Bleed:the acoustic songs on Beggar`s was strange in a time when bands were turning up their amps. The disturbing lyrics on Let It Bleed might have been a busting the utopian hippie bubble.
John Coltrane-A Love Supreme:jazz in the `60s was a golden age of ideas and new sounds. This 33 minute suite tribute to God was an energetic and dreamy work.
Skip James-Today:the folk revival of the `60s got alot of older bluesmen active again.Skip had`nt made a record since 1931,his first Newport gig freaked people out since he looked like he came right out of 1931.A spooky falsetto voice made him a ghostly presence even when he was alive.
Dusty Springfield-Dusty In Memphis:blue eyed soul from a brit.Shelby Lynne has made a career in the last 10 years trying to recapture this record.
Velvet Underground And Nico and self titled:the debut was a mix of melodic tunes and more noisy moments. The self titled is more conventional though pretty mellow for a band known for loving distortion.
John Lee Hooker-Live At Cafe Au Go Go:a 1966 live date with backing by Muddy Waters and his band.John Lee is his usual down and dirty self.He opens the album was a song about killing a man who messed around with his wife.
The Ronettes-Best Of:Phil Spector is a mad genius.Ronnie was the chick who delivered the goods, she was pretty, sang pretty, and makes this timeless music.
Sonny Rollins-The Bridge:a comeback after a hiatus from the music biz.He spent years away practicing his sax on the Williamsburg Bridge in NYC.Hence the title.Guitarist Jim Hall is his usual cool self.
Zevon was underated.Everyone likes The Ramones

Family-Music In A Doll`s House:sounds like it might be the first prog rock album,Roger Chapman`s vocals sound like an elf on crack
Bill Evans-Sunday At The Village Vanguard:piano jazz at it`s best, the bassist died 10 days after this record.
incredible String Band-The Hangman`s Beautiful Daughter:freak folk by two scottish weirdos.I don`t know what these guys were smoking.Their fans range from Robert Plant to Steve Malkmus.
Albert Ayler-Live In Greenwich Village:Mike Watt is a big fan of this record.Ayler`s jazz was like a marching band on acid.He died mysteriously in 1970,thought by some as suicide but murder by others.Tom Verlaine of Television used to say his guitar playing was trying to emulate Ayler`s sax playing.
Etta James-Rocks The House:one of the greatest live albums. In Nashville in 1963,Etta sings like a wildcat to an out of control audience.
Townes Van Zandt-Our Mother The Mountain and self titled:Like a Texas Leonard Cohen,a poetic hillbilly and rambler.
The Shangri La`s-Best Of:they were only 15 to 17 years old during their heyday.Mary Weiss was one of the coolest chick singers of the `60s.From the New York Dolls to Sonic Youth, many loves these girls.
And when they played Seattle,The Sonics backed them!Scott Walker-4:big orchestration and beautiful songs.Walker`s voice sounds loungy at first but give him a chance.
13th Floor Elevators-Easter Everywhere:Roky Ericson`s old band.Texas psychedelia at it`s best.J mentioned this as his ‘Sunday morning record’.
Pentangle-Basket Of Light:UK folk group with some jazz thrown in.Bert Jansch and John Renbourn were a great two guitar team.Jacqui McShee`s vocals are excellent.
Roland Kirk-We Free Kings
Kirk was a true original jazzman. He played 3 saxophones at the same time,he also was a master of the flute.Did I mention he was blind?
Love-Forever Changes:Arthur Lee was a strange genius.’write the rules in the sky and ask your leaders why’.Good orchestration too.
