thankshey + welcome
fine that you enjoy the new J record
have you been at the acoustic show in Berlin last fall? I’ve been there and it was fantastic…October 15, 2002 at 7:46 pm in reply to: very friendly German review of Free So Free @ wasteofmind.de #57660…. and here’s my go at it in English
Style: Indie God
Those, who once succumbed to the charm of J Mascis will probably never be able again to say something bad about the man. Since years – first with Dinosaur Jr., then on solo paths – the gentleman cuddles us with Indie Pop rock songs: Those songs with their cranky guitar tunes and the characteristic nasal singing capture the ears by and by and any possible criticism recoils without effect.
Those who always complain could say that the man doesn’t permit any progress in his music for years – as long as he sneaks kindhearted into the ears like that, no fan would critisize it.
Even if this record will possibly need some more time to take its place inside the ears, compared to its predecessors – songs like Everybody Let Me down (the best Song, which <Wishbone> Ash never wrote) or the wonderful exhilerating Freedom are simply the best kind of "rocking ear candy". Marvellous, like always.(valuation: 80%)
hey rambleon, thanks a lot for typing the review out & for your own remarks on the gig as well
I like it how J talks about "…letting people hear the songs they love…".
That might be the reason, why he still plays "Freakscene" …..well, another reason might be, that Freakscene is still a wonderful song wow, sounds like those shows with the Cobra Verde guys are really great
Thanks a lot for the review! I can’t confirm the noise you describe regarding the Japanese release, can’t speak for the US- or European realeases, though…
thanks a lot
hey, I like the idea to have a summary of all tour dates we know yet
wait, all..? what happend to the German dates???hey rambleon,
welcome + great, that you finally decided to register After the acoustic gig in Berlin last year, I went onto the stage and asked J for an autograph, too. I mumbled something like "great show, thank you", because that was what I felt in that moment, and yeah, he just looked at me the same way you describe: He looked like he really wondered why people ask him for autographs …
He didn’t reply. Later I asked myself if I just didn’t wait long enough for a reaction? Don’t know, but seems it was the same situation like you describe it hey squeapler, thanks a lot for the resumption
I really hope to find a recording of one of the gigs with the Cobra Verde guys.
I think, Cobra Verde won’t tour with J in Europe, so we won’t have the chance for "electric" gigs around here this fall, but an acousic gig is wonderful, as well woopee! had the record in the mail yesterday
I’m still astonished how cheap it was.
I persuaded my old record player to work and the record sounds fine.
Both songs are the same version like I have on CD, so you seem to have a bad pressing, Eight Ball Joe Strange, I haven’t bought a vinyl record in years, to say nothing of a 7", so it’s definitely something special

now that would be great I’d consider to import a J gig, too…
nice to hear from you again, maxini wow! I would really love to hear that version of Ammaring!
thanks, Squeapler, I’m looking forward to hear more about the gig -
