last night I saw Antony & the Johnsons in a big venerable classical theater here in Hamburg, with all things associated like ushers, first and second bell and lots of highly cultural atmosphere
well, Antony’s friend and mentor Lou Reed made some musical contributions to a stage play there some years ago, so this could be the reason for the location.
with several hundreds of devoted listeners, the theater was full, and I guess most of them were there for the first time, like me
well, Antony’s one of the exceptional voices in music business, and one of the exceptional characters in any case, who lives his gender ambiguity with senitivity and confidence.
at first both artist and audience seemed to be a bit in awe of the location, as people even didn’t even dare to make a sound when Antony entered the stage, because the guitarist was still playing some intro notes… also the performance started cautious and restrained with some of the slow piano songs one after the other. the band consisted of an electric bass, an acoustic guitar, accordion, violin and cello, and Antony on the piano. I missed some drums, which would have pulled the performance from chamber music to the singer/songwriter side of things, but probably this was well planned…
in the second half of the show things started to get more familiar, as Antony started to talk to the crowd, sung a duet with each of us (as we all of us were humming like he told us).
At some times I had the feeling that his huge voice wasn’t always used to capacity, but this might only be a sign of the unfathomed potentials there.
At the moment when he went into the song (or prayer?) "Hope There’s Someone" everything finally fell into place, and I was just sitting in awe, feeling that one of the greatest songs was performed by one of the greatest singers right before me
and after that the main show was over, followed by standing ovations and 3 encores. So this was one of the most remarkable shows I’ve seen in a long time, and I’m all glad I went
I can also highly recommend the new record "I am a Bird Now" which came out on Secretly Canadian, the Songs:Ohia label.
…there’s nothing to complain about that one can expect all the great songs from YLAOM in the reunion shows, and also many songs of the 1st album, but I agree, I would’ve been also happy with at least one more song from BUG in a set.
ok, thanks for asking Lou, so it seems we won’t have to expect Let It Ride (which I also like a lot). but anyways, like I said, less Bug songs make room for each and every great song from YLAOM, and that’s a good thing

thanks for the info!cool site!
I’ve seen the Thermals twice here in Hamburg/Germany, in 2004 and in 2005. can’t come up with setlists, though, my impression was that they played pretty much everything from both albums
in August 2004 it was so hot in the club, that Hutch Harris undressed and played in underwear. when they returned in 2005, he mentioned that he had to play in underwear the last time he was in town, so I guess this is what he connects with Hamburg now
here are some cool pics from Gent/Belgium, also a Murph pic among them:

Muziekfriek, thanks a lot for the link with these excellent pics!

my dutch isn’t doing well, so I can’t read much of the review, but it’s always good to know that there are show reviews posted, to "spread the word"June 18, 2005 at 6:23 am in reply to: So there have been like 6 European shows and no recordings #110302mr x, thanks for letting us know about your amsterdam recording,
we’ll patiently wait

trensidoh, also good to know about your recording to be made ready for uploading
…otherwise you could send me a cd-r with the show, and I’d convert it into quality flac or shn files & upload them to fsf, would be no prob for me.hey Bucky, great that you made it to the Amsterdam show. it’s quite a bit closer for you than Groningen, I suppose.
Boo, you might already know http://www.freesofree.net where you can download a big bunch of Dinosaur Jr/ J&the Fog shows in audio and video formats for free. …but of course it’s not the same as seeing them live

hey Bill, welcome, it’s good to see long-time fans showing up here in the forums

I’ve seen Dinosaur Jr on their reunion tour here in Europe 3 times and all I can say it’s worth it!

didn’t have time to check out the song until now, and I agree it’s pleasing
…I mean, I wouldn’t detect J to take part there if I wouldn’t know, but it put Mew on my radar, and that seems to be quite a good thing
🙂 gonna check the music on their site next.just for the records: Leah typed out the printed setlist, but I’m quite very sure that the real set differed a bit from it:
In A Jar
No Bones
Gargoyle
The Lung
Bulbs Of Passion

Forget The Swan
Kracked/Sludgefeast
Budge

Anyway, got the June 9 show on MD, but it sounds like a nitemare… the levels where just too much for my mic although I set the rec-volume to the lowest point possible. The recording is a mass of distortion, but you can still get a thrill out of it when playing it back plus all of the excitement & good vibe is there. You can actually enjoy J’s guitar solos, but it’s just super-lofi. Anyway, I’ll keep my finger’s crossed and wait for a better recording to surface (Come on – there where some 2000 people there, somebody MUST have recorded it…) Ajay, the sound-guy, had a pair of stereo-mics set up at at the soundboard. I’ve seen at least 5 cameras filming.
Anyway, if no other recording of the June 9th show will surface in the next weeks I’ll try and get my show uploaded, no matter how crappy it sounds.wouldn’t it be cool to check out this recording regardless of the sound problems mentioned? I hope he’ll upload it on fsf! I’m quite sure I wouldn’t be the only one to appreciate it

thanks for the setlist and the reviews! sounds like it was another exciting show

…Lou lost his voice! no wonder, all through the festival weekend it was way too cold for the season & rainy, and the screaming itself mustn’t be good for the throat, too

good they have a break now!
