Green Mind as #1? A bold move on their part. Put it at 3 and then move up Bug and YLAOM and I can agree with that list.
"Blah" – from the Melrose Place CD – is my new favorite Dinosaur Jr. song. Why this song wasn’t on an official D Jr. release (it’s definitely better than most if not all b-sides from the post-Where You Been era)? I found this CD for $2 at a used sale; if you can find it it, pick it up. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Freak Scene – a great song that I’ve heard too much.
Just Like Heaven – this was awesome when it first came out; now I wouldn’t mind if I never heard it again.
Feel The Pain – I like this one way more than I did when it was new, but both lyrrically andd musically it doesn’t do much for me.Drawerings – I wouldn’t have immediately thought of this one (and have never heard it specifically rated high enough to qualify as ‘overrated’), but I do agree that this sounds a little too much like Get Me.
Well, if by "underrated" we mean those Dinosaur songs that just get ignored, I’d have to put:
The Little Baby (I love the spoken verses)
Getting Rough (def. my favorite offa HIO)
Green Mind (the song, but I think thhat with the exception of "The Wagon" & "Thumb", this album is pretty underrated
Keep the Glove (yeah, this song does get lost in the Dino discography)
Whatever’s Cool With Me (classic Dinosaur Jr. – this is a song that they should be playing now!)If anyone feels like describing "Blah" (or sending me a copy) I would love to know more – instrumental? vocals? long jam? short burst of noise? etc.
January 19, 2010 at 10:14 am in reply to: Last minute Dinosaur Jr. show in Connecticut! January 15 #137174This was one of the better Dinosaur Jr. shows I’ve seen; far better than when they played at Daniel Street on April Fool’s Day last year… after that show, and the Toad’s Place show in Oct. I thought I was done seeing Dinosaur live…too much of the same thing over and over again, BUT when I saw that they were iin Milford, I couldn’t resist. Plus I wanted to see Kurt Vile.
Well, thanks to the really slow line out front, I did manage to miss Kurt Vile w/o realizing it, but at least I got to see all of Dinosaur Jr. Generally, surprise isn’t something I expect from Dinosaur Jr., but this setlist did have a few. "Thumb" as the opening song was expected, but the J’s mellow outro was awesome, and something I think you fans will appreciate if you get to hear it. From there, it was different from usual – In A Jar wasn’t a song I expected, nor was "Raisans," particularly so early in the set (and an awesome version it was too…
I brought a friend, and was concerned that he might not be into the show, but I think he liked it even more than me. The sound, it should be noted, was excellent – whenever I took out my earplugs, I was soothed by the full and layered roar coming from the amps.
All in all, a really fun show; the kind that makes me excited to see Dinosaur Jr. again!
Well, keep in mind that I did leave early, but the show up to that point was almost exactly an hour.
For me, it’s more about song selection than length – I’d rather hear a shorter Dinosaur Jr. set full of different songs than a long set containing the same songs. This set was great for its inclusion of so many songs I’d never heard them play before.
Also, Lou and the Missingmen were really enjoyable.
I could be wrong, but I thought that they were only giving away the single on the spring tour. When they gave them out at the Milford show, all you had to do was show whatever you used to get in the show and they gave you a 7". So it doesn’t matter where you get your ticket, I guess.
Definitely Flying Cloud – though I do like Not The Same – I’ve been listening to Green Mind a lot lately. I think that since the reforming of the original trio, the other Dinosaur albums kind of get overlooked more as J Mascis solo albums. Which might have some validity, but that doesn’t change the fact that Green Mind has such a different sound than all the other albums. It’s like Bug taken to the next level, all layered and psychedelic. I’ve been listening to Green Mind since the day it was released and last week I was still hearing new layers of sound that I’d never noticed before. But, yeah, Flying Cloud is great – I too like the narrative element of J on the ski lift, etc. See, that’s another thing I really like about Green Mind – lyrically it’s more specific than some of the other albums, with their being some element of a story in them as opposed to just feelings being expressed. Anyway…
Definitely Raisans, but the end of Sludgefeast is cool too.
Lately I’ve been thinking that the final solo in "Plans" is up there with the best of them, that fluid and soaring yet urgent sound that the best of J’s solos have.
Wow – awesome setlist. A bunch of new songs and also Raisans.
After a somewhat disappointing show in Milford back in April (same old setlist), I thought I was done seeing Dinosaur, but now I can’t wait for the fall tour.
It’s probably too early – I bet the downloads will be available on Tues. when the album is officially available.
I’m going to try to wait until my LP arrives to listen to this – please let it come Tuesday (or earlier) – but I may have to break down and listen before then.
When I got to the door of the show, I was given an ordinary raffle type ticket, took it to the merch table and exchanged it for my 7". There was also the download option (either/or, you can’t get both).
Yeah, I was definitely disappointed that there were new songs. I too thought Lou’s claim of no new songs was an April Fool’s joke. Not a bad show, but a bit Dinosaur Ordinaire. If you’ve seen the reunion, you’ve probably seen this show already. Very predictable set list. But itt was good to see the band in such a small place, and it was cool to get the 7".
Setlist:

Well that was a good show. Not the best I’ve seen (my personal favorite was the first night at Rebel in 12/06) but the sound was good, the band was sharp and it was an enjoyable time, even though I wasn’t crazy about the setlist. Here’s what I can remember of it (in rough order):
Almost Ready
Been There All The Time
Back To Your Heart
Out There
Pick Me Up
Feel The Pain
This Is All I Came To Do
The Wagon
Freak Scene
Repulsion
