I’ll give everyone some low-down with this DVD. There were some additional ‘non-fan’ filmers. Not a bad thing, but just wanted to make a mention of it. One of them was Philipp Virus, the same guy who directed and filmed the Middle East DVD. He and I filmed in the press-pit (right in front of the band). I was on Lou’s side, Philipp on J’s. Near the end, Dave Markey even filmed from our location a bit. Another thing to mention: 3 of the ‘fans’ had their own professional equipment and heavy duty tripods. Another non-fan’s professional set-up was used from the far back balcony spot. Everyone used HD equipment (I used a Sony store-bought camera). I made the most of the times I’d seen the band before, and wanted to highlight Lou and Murph as much as possible. Sometimes I’d pan over to J, just when I knew a good part was coming up (like his wah-wah part on “Yeah We Know”). The club itself really helped by having some great lighting – not the same scenario with the Middle East (which is much more of a bare bones place). I never understood why the Middle East was chosen to make a legit DVD, but I do like that one since it’s from the same year they reunited. I’m glad to have helped make the BUG DVD enjoyable.
Good work folks. This blows my theory tho, where I imagined the line was “no bones, no phone”.
July 1, 2011 at 11:11 am in reply to: Photos from Philly – June 24th 2011 – Electric Factory #138425Did anyone interesting sing “Don’t” in Philly?
Thanks for the photos, especially of the ones with Lou singing “Don’t”. Any leads at getting a recording of this show, anyone? This might be the ONLY 2011-Bug-tour show where Lou is singing the song (all the other shows so far have been fans/special guests — I think). It’ll be interesting to see how the eight Euro shows play out.
Well, the “In the Hands of the Fans” event was a success! Six actual fans filmed the entire performance at the 9:30 club, with a little help from two other cameramen. I was lucky to shoot from the press pit (between the stage and the crowd barrier) and I think once this whole thing is spliced together with all the footage and audio mix: this will be one hell of a cool DVD!
“Don’t” is the song a lot of people (even hardcore Dino fans) skip when listening to BUG. But it’s good people are having a re-awakening for the song, due to this tour. Unfortunately Lou really blew his voice out after performing it the first night in Portland ME, which makes the need to hear a recording of this show even more essential!
Who sang “Don’t”? Just curious.
You’re a great Dad for making her birthday more memorable. The timing just happened to be sort of okay for me, plus I think I’d kick myself forever if I didn’t do anything.
It’s kinda disappointing that almost nobody is submitting to this contest. You get to film the band! I’m beginning to feel like it’s a volunteer request. The freakin’ Stooges did this contest last year… the STOOGES folks! DVD coming out this year supposedly (and shot by mere fans!).

could use some views, thanks folks. good luck to all. i’ll try my best to get some close ups of J’s beard
Well, after a little digging (e-mail to Brian, the band’s manager) it’s confirmed: Henry Rollins will not be interviewing them at the Northampton MA show. He’ll be doing his “talking show” instead.
These are actually from 1987, still great photos — from the Flipside archives.
Whoa! That’s ancient, almost pre-historic!
Thanks!
More detail of this story is found in the book "Our Band Could Be Your Life" by Michael Azerrad, as well as other fun nuggets. I also love the story about Lou annoying J by constantly sucking on the eyeball of a Cookie Monster doll while travelling in the van. A great gift for X-mas!
I heard about the Yod festival. Grant Hart (of Husker Du) played some rare material from the Yanomamos EP from 1988, I assume at Byron Coley’s request/love for obscurity. Did J play anything abnormal or interesting?
