Regarding the location of Springfield:

One thing to consider is that Matt Groening is from Oregon. Alot of the characters are named after streets where he grew up. Flanders and Terwilliger for instance. Also think about Springfields radio station, KBBL. If Springfield were east of the Mississippi river it would be called WBBL, so we know it lies west of the river.
