Mattman,
Yes, this helps. Thanks for the info. Do you recommend any audio set-ups rather than Real Player?
I’ll check the boards later for your response, but for now I’ve got to get a move on.What exactly is Reverb? From what I can make out it’s a program on the tele. Is it only available for the ones who have cable?
I’m under the impression that ELJ likes to be obnoxious to get attention just like that class clown in high school who thought he was so funny. High school mentality. I don’t find it fun to talk people down, but in this case, it’d be nice to see less pointless posts by ELJ.
Why is it so hard to fathom what a fan site is all about? You’d think one could learn something or spread a little knowledge to other fans. Then again, one does as one pleases. Can’t please ’em all. I guess "some of us" have no concept of decency.
Cheers,
Inksalamiguy –
You mentioned Cecil Taylor’s "Conquistador." I was wondering if you had a hard time tracking this one down. I’ve been looking for a while now, but can’t seem to find it. Do you know if it’s out of print? (On cd)Also, ever heard "Big Fun" by Miles Davis?
Yes, I too have to agree w/ Albini, as well as Pavement. Those Pumpkins always seem to be walking around w/ their noses in the air. Prima donnas!
Hey dimfelmoser-
I’d like to hear your take on the solo Malkmus record. If you’ve heard it, please enlighten me. I’m hoping it’s more acoustic as oppossed to the Pavement "cut-and-paste" approach. Anyone should comment if you’re a Pavement fan, or better yet, if you think this record is something different or better. Come on, let’s hear it………….This story is true? I find it hard to believe, but interesting nonetheless. I think you mentioned Big Black earlier. Fucking great fucking great. Shellac’s stuff is right up there too. "At Action Park" is amazing!
Speaking of those unrecognized musicians, I’d like to recommend Alice Coltrane to all of you who haven’t heard. That’s right, John’s wife. Her albums are right up there with John himself and sorta in the same vein as Ornette Coleman. For all you Spiritualized fans (me included) you’ll probably enjoy this. She is a harp goddess.
Hey salamiguy-
I must say I agree with you on NIN, also being overrated. And lets not forget – HOLE. The worst of all!
I found it interesting that you mention Big Black and The Swans. Fucking BIG BLACK! Groundbreaking perfection!I kind of regret bringing up this topic because we could all go on and on about stuff we think is lame. But there is just SO MUCH of it!! Gotta vent somehow and why not on these silly boards?
maxini – I agree. Murmur is such a classic.
you’re right I haven’t seen them live so maybe I’m spouting off too soon. I guess as far as "post-punk’ or "emo" or whatever the hell you want to call it, these guys just don’t do it for me. I’ve heard their albums and tried to like it. His voice bugs me (and I like strange voices) and I guess I never really focused in on the lyrics because the music bores me to death. Hopefully their live shows do something totally different. They’re probably good guys n all, just not for me. I guess i go through a habit of weeding out the hoards of new "indie" bands because there is just a slough of them that all seem so moderate. Not to push anymore buttons, but I also think Smashing Pumkins are far too overated. I’ve seen them live too. Granted, Corgan is a great guitarist, but again, does nothing for me. I guess i kinda liked that 1979 song though. Just thought I’d start a bit of a debate here. What bands do you think are overated?
Black Flag – Damaged
Leonard Cohen – Songs Of Leonard Cohen
Nick Drake – Five Leaves LeftWow! That is such a fucking coincedence because I just listened to swordfishtrombones last night as I was going to sleep. No lie!! It’s a strange strange world. Good to know. I was way off, but I do love Waits!!
I’m not really fimiliar with the name Bill Reicheinbach, but I do know the Getz/Byrd record. Infact that whole series of Getz’ Bossa Nova stuff is great. I think there are 5 total. They all have that painting, but each one is a different color, correct? That’s how I know it. I usually remember albums by the cover rather than name and those paintings are nice. Anyway, back to that lil’ trivia question. I’m gonna guess it’s either Herbie Hancock, or possibly Quincy Jones. That is a total guess. I’m not the biggest fan of 80’s jazz music. I think that’s where the hip hop, and rap comes in. That 80’s jazz stuff is pretty Kenny Loggins to me. BUT I haven’t heard much of it. Maybe there’s some stuff worth while. I hear that certain Pat Metheny records are worth a listen though. I haven’t had the interest to venture on that listening experience. So who the hell is it anyway?
I’m sure all you "eclectic" types have heard it, but maybe the ones who aren’t so damn cool and hip might want to checl out Antonio Carlos Jobim’s solo stuff. Better yet, try Jaoa Gilberto’s solo recordings. Brilliiant music! Also, everything Gil Evans did was incredible. Not Bossa Nova, but somehow it relates. More like the Cal Tjader stuff, but better! "Individualism" by Gil Evans is one of my all time favorite records of any type or genre of music. If you haven’t heard his stuff, do your self a huge favor and check this one out. That’s all for me.
Just wanted to take a moment to clarify my earlier response to dimpfelmoser. I didn’t intend to come off as having a chip on my shoulder about Kerouac for god sakes. I guess I just enjoy debating, and in that, I was defending a hero of mine. That is all. I just don’t see how that book is overated. Appreciated maybe. Anyway, no need for a philosophy forum. Speaking my little mind is all. My 2 cents. weeeeeeee. I’m envious of your journeys, it really does sound like a blast. There are about 38 states I have yet to see and I’m from this place! I’m sure I’ll be seeing ya on the boards…..
My favorite author as of late: Haruki Murakami
Anybody read any of his stuff?? If David Lynch wrote books, I think it’d be somewhat like this. His writing is simple, easy for the average joe to relate to. A mix of mystery, noir, pop culture and sci-fi. Some I definately recommend: Hard-Boiled Underground and The End Of The World, Norwegian Wood, Dance Dance Dance, The Elephant Vanishes, and South Of The Border West Of The Sun. Anyone interested should check out the new Giant Robot magazine: http://www.giantrobot.com It has an interview with this great writer, although I don’t know if it’s posted on the web site. Other books I’ve recently finished:
Amerika by Kafka
Miles Davis autobiography ("A motherfucker!")
Subterraneans by Kerouac -
