Long time boarder, old Turnip Farm web site maintainer and such. Dinosaur super-fan since age 14. (now 26).

Gf and I made it the show. It was awesome seeing the original lineup. Especially since they still had ‘it’ in them. I’ve seen Dinosaur / J about 10 times over the last 12 years or so, and besides the Chapel Hill 97 show, this was without the doubt, the best set I’ve seen any incarnation play.

There were some amusing technical glitches during the set. Lou was looking at his bass feeding back like it was possessed. J broke a string or two and had some minor issues with the pedal board.

Some general comments about the setlist. If anything of this comes off as whining, I’d just like to remind myself that I saw the origianl Dinosaur lineup, and I’m just nitpicking.

      – Freak Scene was an awesome way to start off the set. It got everyone into the show out of the gate. The only other song that could have done that IMO would have been ‘Little Fury Things’.

      – I was let down by the lack of stuff from Bug. Just FS and Budge (which Dinosaur played quite a bit in the 1990’s). I was hoping for ‘Yeah We Know’ or ‘They Always Come’. I know ‘The Post’ and ‘Let It Ride’ were pipedreams.

      – It was great to see Lou singing some of the stuff off the first record. Mountain Man and Does It Float totally caught me off guard. I’m glad they skipped Repulsion, but I wouldn’t have aruged with a blistering version of Severed.

      – Just Like Heaven was awesome with the abrupt ending, just like on record.

      – Tarpit is my favorite tune off of YLAOM. I will survive without hearing it, I suppose.

      – Merch report:

      No posters (I even asked)
      No stickers
$20 purple cow / tour dates back shirts
$20 red cow / no back shirts
      $20 new tour shirts
      $?? gorilla babydoll shirts
      $5 freak scene 7s
$15 bug and dinosaur cd’s. ylaom appeared to be sold out.
didn’t see the buttons, but wasn’t looking for them.
      $?? cow hats

I decided to do my biannual login here and say that I was pretty impressed with the showing on the tele last night.

Can’t wait for those Ohio-ish shows this summer.

          I’ll add some:

          – If you’re a drummer, please do not clap along with your hands over your head. You look like a jackass.
          – If you’re selling merchandise for a band, don’t look annoyned when someone asks you a question… like say ‘how much for this cd that has no price on it?’ If you’re trying to sell stuff, try not to annoy customers.
          – All Ages shows (now that I’m 21+) :D
          – Poor ventilation
          – Venues where the floor slants upwords towards the stage. I’ve been to several.

          Some more specific bashing:

          – If the number of people in your band is > # of people in crowd, DO NOT PLAY (see: Olivia Tremor Control)
          – If you blow a bass amp at the end of your miserable set with one song left, DO NOT WASTE 15 MINUTES replacing it, just to play one more awful song (see: Superdrag @ Cats Cradle last fall) :x
          – If you whine about how tall the microphone stand is, shut up or adjust it. (see: Evan Dando) :slap:
          – If you’re on a guided by voices internet mailing list, it doesn’t make you any cooler to stand togetehr at the side of the stage at a GBV show. It just gives the crowd something more to laugh at.
          – Do not try to nail your drumkit to a gymnasium floor (See: Don Cabralerro)
          – Do not try to light your cymbals on fire while drunk (See: Murder City Devils)
          – Do not whine about how no one comes to your show except your family, even though you haven’t released a record in 4 years, or a good record in 9 years (See: Lou Barlow in Columbus)

I got this old Wank factor 7 show from a guy in Amherst years ago.

            03/05/1995 Northampton, MA -Iron Horse 50:00 AUD T-1 7-

It sounds pretty sh!tty (sound quality wise), and I’m all but convinced that during this show Kevin Shields and Watt are not present.

I think I listened to it once when I first got it and chalked it off as ‘interesting band with a funny name’, and never listened to it again.

Hey VF, I’ve been a passive NRSK fan for a long tine. I have ‘Rival Time’ and some split 7 inchers with the Silver Jews, etc… What other albums are good? Or gooder than the rest? ;)

Did you see Malkmus at Little Brothers? I was at the show (actually taped it too) and I thoguth Malkmus was very drunk and/or very high. It was entertaining though.

Those are from tape trading back in the day, not MP3 sourced stuff. I think some of the stuff I sent to Jeremiah to encode circa 1997 :)

In addition, I have an old trader pal of mine that I could probably get these shows from if they’re for reissue purposes:

                              Dream Songs:

I know this is because of the song title / lyrics but I always hear ‘Made-Up Dreams’ by Built to Spill when I’m going into a dream state, or even when I go to tell someone about a dream. Those lines of ‘no one wants to hear / what you dreamnt about / unless you dreamnt about / them… / but that’s okay / you can make it up / as you go / along…’ just are so surreal.

About LCW by Modest Mouse… This has some of the best sleeping songs around. Trucker’s Atlas has that hypnotizing drum beat that puts me to sleep always, plus it’s 12 minutes long. Cowboy Dan is the perfect winding down song. On the other hand, it’s hard to get much rest when Shit Luck or Teeth Like.. are playing.

Oh, gotta get with Filmore Jive by Pavement for bedtime music. Or Stop Breathin.

I’m just rambling now, but has anyone seen the Pavement DVD? And the guy from KROQ talking shit to the crowd before Pavement plays?

‘We own you! We can turn you on to some really good music… Just like we did with Pavement… 7 or 8 years ago, none of you had ever heard of Pavement, until we started the trend…’

That’s my favorite 2 minutes of DVD footage I own.
