Pedro the Lion doing ‘Something in the Way’ by Nirvana. Spooky sounding to say the least.

21+ shows have got to suck. Here in Ohio, they’re usually just 18+, which is bad enough.
Instead of going the fake ID way, just try to borrow an older friend’s driver license. Make sure you are of the same sex at least. Wear a hat to the show to blur the comparison process even further. It helps if you the person’s ID has glasses and you have glasses on too. Most door people at smaller clubs aren’t that concerned with checking ID’s. If you have will call tickets, usually they forget to ID you anyways.
You can try to come out and be flat out honest. Just explain that you can’t (sounds better than won’t) drink and offer to put a black X your hands. Especially since you’re so close to 21 anyways.
You can also attempt to wing it. Show him your ID and see what happens. I got stamped over 21 when I was 20 a few times. Also, if he goes to the ‘finger counting’ you’re in. I mean, if you tell him you’re 21, and he cant figure out if you are or arent by your ID, I think you’re in. Remember, you turn 22 in 2 months. It’s only a lie, if you believe it’s a lie. However if he is a sharp crayon and he knows you’re lying to him, you’re SOL.
And there’s 2 last resorts….. In most states in the US, you can go to a bar at any age, as long as you’re with a parent or guardian. How you define a guardian could be pretty funny, but it’s worth a thought.
And lastly, when I was 17, (trying to get in an 18+ show) I had a friend go in and get his hand stamped, then met me at the back door pronto and the backs of our hands made sweet ink love I tipped the bartender $4 on a $1 coke to make it feel ‘alright’.
Good luck.

Just got home from the Columbus show. Met up with Kurtis and felt his pain he was having with his digital camera being a bastard. Not sure if he got any decent pictures or not. Let him sober up first
Anyways, J played for about 70 minutes. I’m dumping the DAT to WAV -> MP3 right now, so hopefully it’ll be up in the morning. J played the one new song that I cant remember what Jeremiah told me the name of it was. Here’s approximately what he played (in no real order):
Repulsion
Severed Lips
Quest
Little Fury Things
Throw Down
Not You Again
The Wagon
Blowing It
Flying Cloud
Thumb
What Else Is New
Get Me
Keeblin
Alone (aborted)
Same Day
Amma ring
(new one) ‘better days’
On The Run (Wipers)‘Alone’ started off pretty promising, but J just sorta quit after the first couple lines. It looks like he was having problems remembering how the guitar part went. He also forget the second line of ‘Quest’ and kept playing the intro until he remembered.
That’s about all I can think of. Pretty cool show. Would have liked to hear some different songs (like Tarpit, Gotta Know, NOT THUMB, Water) but it was just cool to see J solo finally.
Even though everyone was yelling and screaming for a 2nd encore, J just grabbed his guitar pedals off the stage and said ‘Thanks, See you next time’. Kind of a bummer, but I dont blame him.

I’m hoping they decide to start the show (ie, Cobra Verde) BEFORE 11pm. They used to start shows with 3 bands at 10pm, 2 bands at 11pm. Sucked all kinds of rear end.I have nothing to complain about since, J *is* playing in the state/part of the country where I live
Sorry southerners, I couldn’t resist.

broke account so i broke a sweat – mmouseJ played solo in Athens in late 96. He played a bunch of brand new songs (that would turn up on Hand It Over). I have a tape of the show someplace….
So, Rosa steals boys off the boards and has her way with them? I am totally confused, but that’s probably good. Heh.
I gave up on videotaping after the last 20 minutes of the Built to Spill show I filmed a few years ago was just Doug’s sneakers. *Must hold arm… upright… losing feeling in elbow* I seriously don’t think I want to try to keep my eyes on a camcorder, dat machine and expensive set of mics either.
Look for .MP3/SHN’s of the Columbus show tomorrow evening on the FTP. Assuming everything goes smoovely.

You know you want to see J acoustic… I mean, he never plays acoustic in the US. Head up I-75! You won’t regret it!

Columbus is only about 9 or 10 hours away from Georgia… Order your ticket now through ticketmaster, then fly up I-77 and you’ll be here in time for the show

Hey Kurtis,
Cool, I will look for you there. I’ll probably be in a grey/orange ‘Tiara’ shirt.
Hopefully if i get off work on time tonight, I’ll get to the club around 8 and be able to hook up my mics on the wall. So look for a white folded index card hanging off the wall pretty close to the PA. I should be underneath it.
I also have a Hi-8 camcorder I can bring if anyone is feeling adventrous enough to hold it up to their face for 90 minutes. My arms dont last that long anymore.
I haven’t been this psyched for a show in a long time. In that tradition, I’m going to get off my rocker and look back at the Dinosaur Jr shows of my past:
11/1/94 Columbus, OH – Newport Music Hall – This was my first ‘real’ show. The only thing I really remember is that Come played for what seemed like forever. J kept teasing the crowd by playing the first few chords to Feel the Pain after every song.
5/3/97 Chapel Hill, NC – Cats Cradle – This was the end all of dinosaur shows. Incredible. I had driven 400 miles in the DeathTrap 88 (my old Pontiac) and was spending the day at NC State with an old mailing lister by teh name of Ben Secrest ([mote]). We ended up seeing Krist Novasellic (sp?) and Mike Johnson in the parking lot before in the afteroon. We spent the afternoon in Chapel Hill record shopping. The show was incredible…. 100 minutes long with an encore of Mike Johnson doing ‘Overdrive’ with J on drums. Afterwards we got to meet J, Mike and George (who is hilarious!) and get some records signed.
5/4/97 – Norfolk, VA – The Boathouse – Heading north in the Deathtrap 88 with Ben for the show the following night in VA. We were completely lost in Norfolk just looking for someplace near the water that looked like a concert venue. We finally found it and it was pretty disappointing. The crowd was full of asses who were intent on fighting with each other. I got J’s ‘baked goods’ pic after the show and elbowed one of the boneheads jumping for it. All of this and I left the dome light in my car on. doh.
5/?/97 – Columbus, Newport Music Hall – I can’t count how many shows I’ve seen that have been ruined by the lack of atmosphere at the Newport. It was just a going through the motions set for Dinosaur. Blah.
5/?/97 – Clevleand – The Agora – After calling up Marlyce from the Mailing List, we decided to head up to Cleveland for the show. This is right behind Chapel Hill for the best show. They again did a version of ‘Overdrive’ with J on Drums and George playing the Bass like he was a total rock star. We got to sit on the front of the stage for the show. Awesome.
11/1/97 – Detroit, MI – St Andy’s Hall – A friend (at the time) and I decided to see all of beautiful (sic) Detroit in an attempt to find the venue. I don’t remember a whole lot about teh show except J kept saying how ‘the people next door have the party going on’ since it was next to a bassy night club’. I actually have the show on tape and I keep saying ‘I think this is the ‘Alone’ guitar’ after almost every song
Tonight—- It’s been almost 5 years… Can’t wait…

Least favorite has to be ‘Green Mind’. It’s such a departure from the SST stuff. I’m not saying if that’s a good or bad thing, but it’s just weird. If you ever listen to all the Dino albums in chronological order, Green Mind just sticks out. You go from Bug which was pretty rockin to Whatever’s Cool With me which is just a mish-mash of everything, to the adult contemporary sounds of Green Mind
Blowing It / I Live for That Look just grates on my nerves. Probably because I’ve heard about 100 different live versions of it, but that’s me.
Oh yeah, I also can’t tolerate ‘Thumb’. Call it great, call it wonderful, whatever. *next track*
-Jamie, on a certian level I can’t relate…
Remember though, that Green Mind was basically J’s show from start to finish. I believe that Murph played drums (ie, played J’s written drum parts) on a few on the songs.
I’m not saying that J doesn’t/didn’t know how to play bass, but the bass lines are very secondary. Then again J wasn’t trying to turn the bass amp up all the way to overpower the guitar amp, like some former Dinosaur Jr bassist we know
I do agree though about the being produced part. I’m sure WEA/Sire gave him a little bit of money to play with and he actually wanted it to sound a little more professional. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

It’s a good idea *not* to yell for Guided by Voices songs.
-Jamie, witnessed the demise of Guided by Verde in person circa 10/97.
Finally got around to ordering my ticket a few minutes ago. I have no idea how a $13 turned into a $19.25 purchase.
For anyone who hasn’t been to Little Brothers before, it’s a great place to see a show. They’ve got a pool table, a full (and cheap!) bar, and no security / arse monkeys. I was there this past Saturday in fact…
Not sure if I know any of you going to the show or not. I used to / still do run the Turnip Farm, and I’ve met quite a few mailing listers at shows in the past.
I’ll be the tall boy with the bottle of Rolling Rock, DAT machine and Microphones. Hopefully sitting on the side ledge.
If anyone from out of a town needs a place to crash instead of driving home, email me and we can talk.

replying to some old threads…
I have an audio tape of a show from Nagatuck, CT in 1987 or 1988 where the show is stopped due to (from what I’ve heard) J and Lou attacking each other. I should really convert it to MP3…. they’re in the middle of a song from ‘Bug’ then all you hear is feedback and Lou saying something really sarcastic into the microphone.
You can see a brief (like 2 second clip) of this in a Sonic Youth video. I think it’s ‘Teenage Riot’, which is on one of those SY video comps.
Supposedly Lee Ranaldo was the one who videotaped the show, and my friend has been waiting to get a copy from him since 1992. *sigh*. Some things will never happen…
Also on this topic, Murph has said in interviews that the whole band would be driving in the van for hours upon hours without saying one single thing except when somebody needed to goto the bathroom.

Anyone else remember reading that J didn’t know guitar chords by their names until the late 80’s? I think it was in an interview with him, Kevin Shields and some british wank crica 1991. Anyways it was about like:
J: I learned guitar by playing solos. Playing power chords hurt my fingers really bad, so I just played solos first.
Interviewer: So you don’t know chords?
J: I learned their proper names finally, so yes I can play them.
I’m trying to locate that article, but I dont see it anywhere. I remember being talk about pot and Domino’s Pizza in the interview too… Anyone?
