In other news, a few weeks ago I had a dream that my father was in Neil Young’s band. During one song Neil stopped playing, walked over to my dad, and gestured something like, "what the hell are you doing?" My dad pointed at the sheet in front of him, indicating: "that’s what it says." Neil shook his head, looked at the music on the sheet, and had to admit that my father was right. That was what it said.
I also had a dream once — much longer ago — that I had to play bass for Dinosaur Jr. (I can’t play bass, I’ve never even tried.) We were on stage, J was going at it with his guitar, and I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Scary.
But she does know what you look like clothed? How come?

Just because the UK and the US don’t notice bands like dEUS (Belgium) and The Notwist (Germany), doesn’t mean time stood still in these regions. You’ll just have to look a bit harder, that’s all.Yes! I see that my sudden move to Scotland has not lead me away from the path of J. I can see him in Edinburgh now. Thanks for those dates, Javro.

I thought this sort of reviewing died out in the late 70’s when NME decided to pull its head out of its arse and sell some copies instead.

Dude. You know this "review" is set up to be a joke, right? As was mentioned in the interview with the Boston Globe: It was a hoax perpetrated by gonzo journalist Byron Coley, who wrote the press release, complete with notes about Mascis’s parachuting ”straight through a flock of birds” and ”bursting into the blankness of clouds.” Mascis laughs at the thought of it, adding that Coley also wrote some notes for his last album that were so out there (”He said I recorded the album all underwater”) the label rejected them.
You can find a copy of it here. It is a listed as a "CD (2)", so I assume this is the version of More Light with a bonus cd featuring "Riptide Swim Sideways" and "Let’s Go To Church" — if memory serves. Very a-typical songs for J. I never got into them, to be honest.
I was there (with Samwise, and Wim — who we met at the show), and it was indeed short but very, very sweet. Great couple of songs. Even better: we talked to a manager-type-person after the show, who told us J would be back in November for a tour. If I’m not mistaken, he will play the Vera in Groningen (a show I’ll be able to go to by foot ), the Crossing Border festival, and a show in Rotterdam. I assume there will also be other European dates, but I can’t say where or when.
You can watch the entire show — including J, but I’m not sure when he will be on — live on video from 4.00 PM to 7.00 PM FreakScene Time, right here. The day after tomorrow the show will also be available on demand there, so you can see it whenever you want to.

It’s true — you don’t need tickets. But to be sure you get in, you may want to call 035-671 22 22 (from Germany, that should be your international access code, then 31-356712222, I think), Monday to Wednesday between 12.00 and 17.00, and they’ll put your name on the guest list.
I’m not familiar with this club, but the evening will last from 22.00 to 1.00 (doors open at nine), it will be recorded by VPRO radio, and apart from J Mascis the other artists are Dr Dick (punk from Deventer) and Face Tomorrow (rock from Rotterdam).
Seems like J’s show in Deventer is confirmed now. Click here for the venue’s website. Can’t wait!

quote:
Does anyone know if that’s a new Lou Barlow album or just a re-release of old stuff?

It is, indeed, a new Sentridoh album. You can read an unenthousiastic review here. Last thing I heard about the Folk Implosion is that it’s going to be a "real band", consisting of Lou and three "new" guys.
Happy birthdays, y’all! Have fun! And don’t worry about getting older. As an old dinosaur once said, "I keep getting younger. My life’s been funny that way." So there’s always hope.
According to the IMDB, J has appeared in three Allison Anders movies — Gas Food Lodging, Grace of my Heart, and Things Behind The Sun — as well as 1991: the year punk broke. I think that’s it.
Plus, I’ve got a little theory that J and Don McKellar are actually one and the same person. But that’s just me.
