Ok, so much happened at the show I may end up adding more to this as I remember it. Some good news in here!
I emailed Watt Saturday morning to see if he could get me on the list and he said no problem. Ultimatum had said it was set up before but I wanted to make sure because I had lost some email with the server move and the pc crash… Anyway, he said no problem and our journey began later that day.
Robert (S9), Emily and myself pulled into the parking lot @ Tremont we saw Mike Watt walking inside. We made a b-line to the door saying hello to some friends on the way over. After ringing the bell, a member of the club staff came to the door and said that everyone had left to get dinner. We new Watt had just walked inside but we just walked over and talked my friends and wait. About 2 minutes later, the guy came out and said that he did not know Watt was there and let us in. This is the first time I had really talked to Watt. The first time I met him was @ the Chapel Hill show a few months earlier and I was in such shock from J and them for the first time that I said very little. I asked him if he would mind signing some posters for a future contest to be held here. He was in an office so he could dial in and catch up on email and post the latest diaries. Talked about some upcoming gigs and found out that Ron Asheton, Steve MacKay (Stooges Sax), Flea and Jello Biafra will be joining them @ some of the Cali gigs (you lucky dogs better be doing some taping ). Did I mention there was going to be some cool news here He also gave us a lesson on Apple computers which I personally have not messed with much. Don’t want to get too geeky here but I will say that I was extrememly impressed with the stability and I am now putting a lot of consideration into leaving the pc world… I’ll tell you that the man if from the old school computing world and is a freaking endless wealth of knowledge.
From here we went into the club and saw Eric Fischer (tour manager) and talked to him for a while. Asked how he got into the business and he had a pretty funny story. (I hope I don’t ruin it) Some guys he went to college with had a band but after they graduated they disbanded. One guy still had a strong belief that something would come of it so he kept sending out the demos and eventually got a deal. They asked Eric if he would be their soundman and even though he had never done that he agreed and later went on to manage them. Well, on a later tour, the band (the name is on the tip of my tongue right now) was going to be opening up for Dinosaur. J’s father had just died and he wanted to go home. To get out of the tour, he fired the opening band which he new would piss the tour sponsors enough to cancel. (there is so much missing in there…) A couple years later, Eric was hosting a party on his boat and there were a number of other bands there. In walks J and Eric kicks him off the boat. After a while they bump into one another through mutual friends and laugh about everything. He has been J’s tour manager since 1997. (I know I ruined that story. Eric, if you read this and don’t mind helping me fill in the blanks….) They also said that I was on the list for the previous nights show so I guess Thanh-Thanh had the days mixed up (She still rocks)
J came out and said hey and we began to talk. I was asking how the tour was and such. He said it was going great and they seem to be having a great time. J said the opening bands bass player (tim "dancer" herzog) helped on the first leg of the Fog tour and that he borrowed his guitar strap. They swapped it out with a bondage strap that somone gave them earlier in the tour. He, of course, did not know this until he got on stage and put it on and it dropped below his waist J said he should approve since the bondage strap was vinyl and he is a vegan. hehe Got J and George to sign the posters and returned them to the car for safe keeping.
Came back inside and went backstage with J and talked some more while he played acoustic guitar. Asked about Hand It Over possibly being re-released because I had noticed that most places that carry it state that it is out of print and that they are low in stock. He said he would look into it. Also asked about Dinosaur and he said that he owns the rights for that so he will try to get some more printed up Asked if he had done any recent producing and he said ‘Beechwood Sparks’ had done some recording at Bob’s Place. He said that Rhino Records will be releasing a Dino Greatest Hits record soon. They are doing this on thier own so the tracks may vary from the earlier planned one. They have been recording a bunch of the shows and we can expect to see something released in some form or another in the future. I asked about a possible video comp and he thought that was a pretty good idea too
*J said he was in a ‘reality’ show in Holland (I believe). The concept was that they put x musicians in a house for x weeks and see what kind of songs come out of it. He said he walked out after a few days because it was so lame but has a copy of the show on tape. (Hope I can get a copy of this oneday)!!
Life as Laughter (which J said he really likes) was wrapping up their set while J was marking the setlist up. Watt put in a special request for Maggot Brain after talking to some fans that had driven 3+ hours to be there. I made my way out so that I could get a good spot near the stage.
Took our place was on the left side of the stage in front of Watt (where I met nick who was about to video the show)They were in top form! This is the first time I had ever heard Budge or Repulsion live (in person) and they were amazing. I wished I lived in NY or LA you lucky bastards get the Hellride shows because the Stooges covers leave you hungry for more… J wailed through what had to be a 15+ minute version of the Ammaring with a solo that was nothing short of amazing. When they played the Everything Flows medley (as they did @ the peel sessions) I had to smile because a few weeks ago Watt mailed me for a link to the mp3 so they could re-learn it for the tour. They did an amazing version of it!!! For the encore they added maggot brain and for Just Like Heaven tim "dancer" herzog came out and screamed the ‘YOU’ parts so for a brief moment the band was a four piece!
The show wrapped up and Eric gave me some shirts and stickers to giveaway (again for upcoming contests). We talked to everyone a but more and, met Hatchetface, which cracked J up when he said that was his name on the boards.
Went home and crashed
This was the best dino/j show I have seen to date and I can’t wait to get copies up for the site!!! I know I left some stuff off and rambled a good bit but as the name says, I am the admonisher so I can do that If I think of more or get some corrections mailed to me I’ll add to this…
If they come to your town go see them. If they come to a nearby town go see them. If they come to a town a friend live in go see them… Make sure you go up and say hello to all of them. They are all super nice guys!
jeremiah – still in shock from an amazing evening.

Frank Black Cancels 2 Shows
LESTER, Pa. (AP) — Thieves in suburban
Philadelphia stole up to $100,000 worth of
guitars, musical equipment, and other items
from veteran rock musician Frank Black,
forcing his band to cancel their next two
shows.Black, who formerly led the avant-garde
Pixies, had performed with his new group, The
Catholics, Thursday night in Philadelphia. The
band’s trailer and most of its musical
equipment were stolen from a hotel parking
lot. While the band is insured for its 17 guitars,
amplifiers, drums, and other equipment, some
of the vintage items are irreplaceable, Black
said. They include four 1960s Fender
Telecaster guitars. The Philadelphia show was the third date on
The Catholics’ current tour. The band has had
to cancel shows in Washington and Pittsburgh,
but plans to buy new equipment and resume
their tour with three shows in Toronto.[ April 17, 2001: Message edited by: jeremiah ]

quote:
I was at Tremont Music Hall for the Charlotte show 04/14/01. Peace. I was fortunate enough to get stage left(in front of Mike "the bass machine" Watts) thanks to a 6’4" giant who let me video the show with minor, usual disturbances. More on this video later. Just wanted to let my "new" friends in on a possible, raw video and set list for those interested. Talk some later…
Z

Looking foward to seeing that video Hoped it turned out ok (saw 3 other tapers to…) Also, could you mail me a copy of the setlist or post it here? I know I keep forgetting a song and I want to get them right before I do the full review thing . Very cool meeting all you guys there! I’d have to say we had some of the best seats in the house for watching Watt ‘Freak Out’!

thanks

Very cool, hope I see you there It is a small club but I have never been patted down. I don’t know how they will be if you ask them about recording though. If you get there early and catch J, Mike, George or Eric outside they might help out. ESPECIALLY IF YOU MENTION THAT YOU ARE GOING TO ENCODE IT FOR FREAKSCENE.NET
I am starting to go after poeple selling cdr shows and bootleg videos on ebay because they are the reason it is such a hassle to record at shows. I know most bands don’t have a problem if it is going to be traded, shared and not sold.
Look foward to hearing it live as well as your recording for later

umm johnny holmes, what is the deal? this is a dinosaur jr/j site. sounds like you are used to limp bizkit sites…. around here we try to show a little respect (and sometimes make sense).
I don’t believe in censorship but a couple more dumbass posts like this and I will silence your IP from accessing the site.
Welcome to the boards,
jeremiahWooohooo! Great find Allison
