Lotsa new tunes, nice. But, I second the idea that Out There and Feel The Pain are getting kinda old. Probably the only song that they should always play is Freak Scene. The original lineup now has 5 albums of stuff to play… not that they shouldn’t play any of the other stuff, but they probably don’t need the 90’s stuff to keep it interesting anymore.
July 5, 2009 at 1:16 am in reply to: That Noise in the Background – Farm review by jewcy.com #135810Wow, that’s quite a review. A lot of insight and detail. I gotta say, I’ve rarely seen a record that’s gotten such consistently good reviews… but then again, Beyond did pretty well too.
Well put. One thing similar about Beyond and Farm: both are incredibly consistent records.
I love Beyond, and think it was their best record since Bug, but the one thing I didn’t like about it was how it was mixed: J was too loud at the expense of Lou and Murph. The mixing on Farm, however, is just about right… maybe Lou could still be a bit louder, but I’m a bass man.
However, I see your point about the sequencing: "I Don’t Wanna Go There" really should have been the last track. I’ve seen this point come up in at least one review, too.
Actually, Houses IS the last song on Farm… on the Japanese version, that is.
I live in Japan, and both songs are bonus tracks on the Japanese versions. However, the version of "I Don’t Want To Go There" is only 3.57 minutes long and fades out.
I’d say "Lose" and "Poledo." Their debut is pretty underrated as well.
Nice!
I literally like every single song on this album. But the ones that I’m most into right now are "Pieces" "Ocean In The Way" and "Said The People." I also really like "Your Weather" and "I Don’t Wanna Go There."
March 29, 2008 at 12:03 am in reply to: question about post-Lou albums: did J play most everything? #133177I’ve noticed that, too. It took them a little while to get the bottom end back after Lou left!
Yeah, I noticed that setlist too! The show I saw was great, and I have absolutely no complaints except for that it could have been a song or two longer, but the 2nd Japan show definitely had a killer setlist.
During the encore, I yelled out repeatedly for "No Bones," but we got "Forget the Swan" and "Just Like Heaven" instead–both were so excellent that I didn’t care. Seems like most people were yelling for either "Heaven" or "Mountain Man," so they got one out of two. But, I couldn’t figure out why that one dude kept yelling for "Feel the Pain"–did he come late, or not notice that they played it before, or just wanted to hear it twice? At one point I said to him "Moo yatta yo" (they already did it!"), and that seemed to shut him up.
20 years ago, I originally thought the Jr. sounded weird or corny, probably because I wasn’t used to it. After a little while, I got used to it, and it seemed like their name had always had the Jr. Ultimately, I agree that it adds to their name. So, the lawsuit may have actually helped them… though it was still a lame thing to do.
Though I notice something: some of my own buddies from back then still call the band "Dinosaur" without the Jr.
March 28, 2008 at 9:40 pm in reply to: question about post-Lou albums: did J play most everything? #133174It seems plausible that MJ played most of the bass on their last two albums. J plays drums, so they probably did rhythm tracks live in the studio together, and then J. overdubbed most everything else, except for some backing vox, etc.
To me, a lot of Green Mind has a very "wooden" sound that really sounds like one guy laying down tracks one by one in the studio. Where You Been, in contrast has a much fuller and looser sound–I suspect that they laid down a lot of basic tracks with J, Murph and Mike Johnson playing together, and then they overdubbed after that. The later albums, from what I’ve heard, sound kind of inbetween–not as "live" as Where You Been, but not as "studio" as Green Mind.
Ah, my mistake! They opened with Been There All The Time.
Weirdly enough, during the encore, they asked the crowd what we wanted to hear. Some guy kept yelling for Feel The Pain… despite the fact that it had already been played.

I have a very battered cassette copy of YLAOM without the Jr.! I remember being confused seeing later copies of it in the stores with the Jr. added to it. It was a little bit after they released YLAOM that that The Dinosaurs sued them and they had to change their new. It always kinda annoyed me–I had Deadhead friends who were into The Dinosaurs, but I thought it was a pretty lame and un-hippie thing to do to sue Dinosaur–I mean, Dinosaur and The Dinosaurs, shouldn’t be that hard to tell apart, and even if it wasn’t, it’s not like it would be a bad thing to be confused with Dinosaur (Jr.)!
