September 15, 2012 at 12:08 am in reply to: Stereogum ranks Dinosaur Jr albums from worst to best #139193I love this discussion… like many of you, my favorite Dinosaur album changes over time, but here’s a stab at it:
Bug
YLAOM
Where you been
Farm
Without a sound
Hand it over
Whatever’s cool with me (EP)
Beyond
Green Mind
DinosaurI’m gonna stand up for Without a Sound on several counts: if you listen to the “Keeblin live Australia tour CD” (5 live tracks), “Grab It” is fantastic, even though it is nothing particularly special on the cd, I’d love to hear that tune played again, fantastic solo and drum counterpoint toward the end of a short, frenetic, awesome live track. Also, interesting blend of mellow (Outta Hand, Mindglow) and really rockin’ tunes with crushingly beautiful yet dissonant solos (Even You’s solo…). Of course Over Your Shoulder is fantastic. Not to say I don’t love some tunes off Green Mind, but as a whole, I just still don’t get into that one as much, either. Still don’t. I will say, however, that Thumb is one of their best ever and one of my favorite live tracks. I personally disagree with the idea that “Farm” felt phoned in or on auto-pilot. I felt quite the opposite, I thought the tracks had a bit more urgency to them. “I don’t wanna go there” also makes my favorite list, killer live. Finally, since Hand it Over took a beating overall I’m gonna support it here. I thought the trumpet on “I’m Insane” was absolutely inspired, as well as the intro to “Never Bought It”. Surprisingly, I thought “Alone” was boring and way too long… ? Here’s to discussing where “I bet on sky” falls after everyone gets it!
I’ll try to clarify my muddled thoughts on this show… thanks for correcting my error on the tour dates, Obseqio. Iowa’s a fine place to live, but it’s not exactly a musical hotbed. Some shows in Iowa City, very rarely some in Des Moines, and that’s about it. I usually end up catching good shows in MPLS, Madison (WI), or traveling to Omaha. No knock on the band at all, there usually just aren’t good opportunities to play in Iowa, so this was a treat, for sure.
Regarding the drumming on “Thumb”, I’m not a drummer, so I apologize for the confusing verbiage. Murph stopped playing before J was ready for his solo on Thumb… no arms or hands fell off, no break dancing, he just stopped too soon, and J just kind of played along without drums until he hit the opening notes of the song that start the longer solo… did that confuse the issue more? Anyway, I love Thumb, even if it was a bit rough as they are tuning up for the fall. Those two songs aside (and the ridiculous heat), I thought it was a solid show.
If anyone will be going to the Omaha show, the Waiting Room would be a great place to “feel” the music, pretty small place, so it would be intimate and really, really loud. The Majestic Theater (Madison) is an old opera house with balconies upstairs, it’s a cool vibe. Can’t wait to see them there again, I caught them at the Majestic supporting Farm.Um, make that 15 years… oops.
March 22, 2012 at 10:52 pm in reply to: “in the hands of the fans” – live @ The 9.30 Club dvd #138605In regards to the live”In the Hands of the Fans” DVD, since I’m feeling talkative tonite, this show reminded me of their first “reunion”, in 2005. My wife and I saw them in Central Park, June 2005. I’ll never forget that show, since it was the first I’d seen of Dino with Lou and Murph instead of Mike and George. It was a fantastic show and I’ll never forget that day. Actually, we were standing right next to Matt Dillon. At the time, I didn’t know he had directed the video to “Get Me”, nor that he was a huge Dino fan. If I had, I would have tried seeing if we could sneak in backstage with him. I was more interested in the kick-ass show they put on. They sounded absolutely phenomenal. Actually, my wife tapped me on the shoulder and was like “isn’t this guy like famous or something?” He had expensive looking clothes on and a pretty-looking blonde girlfriend with him… she didn’t seem too into the show. Anyway, I’ll always remember that show and how great and incredibly tight the whole thing sounded. “Forget the Swam” particularly struck a chord, as did several songs from “Bug”. This DVD took me back to that day in Central Park… they were (and still are) fantastic.

p.s. The print is way cool, my kids even dig it, and it reminds me of them when we go the one of the many wondrous 10000 lakes in Minnesoter…March 22, 2012 at 10:23 pm in reply to: “in the hands of the fans” – live @ The 9.30 Club dvd #138604I love this DVD. Can’t wait for more great music in the near future. Long live J, Lou, and Murph. (And please come back to the Midwest- Iowa City, MPLS, or Madison!)
Great assessment of the vibe onstage, Tubby. I agree completely, Murph and Lou on the right just absolutely seem locked in, Murph wailing and Lou totally jamming, it’s a lot of fun seeing them play. And J in front of the Marshalls, kind of swaying to the songs… always enjoy seeing them in that zone.
Totally lame about the "timer" thing, glad you got to hear "I don’t wanna…" in Dekalb. It was one one of the highlights for me at the Madison gig.
Here’s the link to the interview with Lou…

Well, I am very pleasantly surprised by all the positive reviews (and deservedly so!) about Farm. It seems like Dino are finally getting the good reviews they deserve (except for the typical 3.5 star idiots at all the mags…)
Personally, I do feel that this cd has more immediacy/urgency, definitely focused and lots of great melodies. As a definite added bonus, I think that J’s lyricism has improved greatly. I always dug his lyrics no matter how vague (and often that was appealing), but now they seem to be more meaningful. For all us longtime fans, YLAOM is generally the "gold standard", but the band is different- they’ve all grown personally and musically. I don’t think it’s really fair to compare their first 3 records head to head, so I’ll call this their best cd post-Bug. Rock on. -
