J never used any Telecasters in the Fog, or at least as far as I’ve seen or read about….he switched to the Teles in the mid 90s for Dinosaur (favoring two different blue ones), but by the Fog he had decidedly scaled back to just the Jazzmasters. He still uses them in studio for the leads and solos.
Personally I don’t think he will keep it around long. Since about 2005 J has tried using different guitars for shows (the Rory Gallagher Strat, the reverse Flying V), but always goes back to the JMs. Always nice to hear different sounds though!
I still wish they would sell the gray I Bet On Sky shirt that was exclusive to the bundle last year.
Pleasure to have you on the board Ramone! I’m glad you seem to be such a fan of Dinosaur. Is Whatever’s Cool With me your favorite record of theirs?
I briefly tried out the tab and it seems pretty spot on. Made me go back and listen to the song; I forgot what a powerhouse it was.
Look forward to seeing more tabs from you 🙂
also, as Jimmy went to sit at his desk after his monologue, they jammed on Cortez the Killer.
The style of drumming and the lack of Lou backup vocals makes me wonder if this is something J did entirely on his own.
July 20, 2013 at 1:53 pm in reply to: Dinosaur jr (J Mascis) Keep Vegan shoe, 7″ Picture disc & Tote bag #140265Remember gang, J is a very competent producer/engineer and has a recording studio in his house. It wouldn’t surprise me if he recorded this one afternoon a few days before sending it off to be pressed. The only thing that can stop or hinder J is himself.
I’m not expecting this to be busted out at any future concerts….Dinosaur has their selection of songs they do live and it’ll stay that way.
Likewise, I’ve seen the Sans Pile stuff before, but only on Daily Motion. I’m curious to see if the acoustic Just Like Heaven they did for Playboy.com will ever surface again.
I saw this linked too. No one when it happened.
I noticed this about two days ago. Figured it had to be someone on Freakscene. Awesome work!
A brief suggestion. I think you should have different playlists. Maybe all of the stuff from the 80s in one, stuff from the major label years in another, all TV appearances in another, etc etc. There’s a goldmine of awesome Dinosaur stuff on youtube, and I think it would be beneficial to help the less initiated to find it all.
Johnson never did it for me as a bassist. I always thought him to be a very boring bassist, especially considering how rocking Lou was. George Berz is, in my opinion, terrible. I never liked his drumming style, and I practically can’t listen to shows with him.
It’s a shame, too, since J really was on the top of his game in a lot of ways during the major label years.
I might have to pick one up. I never got a chance to get one of the ones before.
Sweet pic, but I’m not sure if that’s a loop junky. His is a purple one. I think it’s just another Zvex pedal, but I’m not sure which.
Interesting that he got rid of the Analogman Sunlion and replaced it with that custom Jim Roth pedal, and that he’s still using his vintage Muff despite the Fuzz Munchkin being built to replace it live.
I can’t wait to see a rig rundown on J. I’ve always been curious to see him talk about his rig in such detail.
do you have a pic of his current board? I’m pretty good at identifying pedals, but I haven’t seen a clear enough picture.
In the recent audio interview that Jeremiah linked to, it’s the song “Prisoners”.
I actually saw Shearwater a few years ago as part of the Matador at 21 Festival. Live they were very boring. Definitely wasn’t my thing.
I’ve since listened to a few of their songs (mostly stuff from the record they put out in 2010), and they aren’t bad, but just boring and hardly my particular taste. They’re weird as an opener for Dinosaur, since it’s a totally different type of vibe.
I would hate to speculate and create false rumors, but I wonder if he did this as a favor to Megan Jasper or something, since Shearwater is a Sub Pop band….
