Dude, you rock. I can’t wait to hear it. How was the new bassist? Any particularly good spots from him?
Seeings such long sets like this makes me wonder why Dinosaur always tends to be on the shorter side. I wonder if it’s Murph? Regardless, it’s cool to see More Light stuff played, though I’m surprised Alone wasn’t played at either show.
Damn. All of the links youtube is giving me seem to be broken. But if you go to youtube, search for “Dinosaur Jr I Know You’re Out There”. it should come up. And hopefully someone a bit more savvy than I am can properly link it.
Not sure if it’s really possible to confuse David Letterman and Jenny Jones. Unless the woman really stopped caring about her looks that year. This should be the correct link.

My problem was always that I didn’t care for Johnson or Berz particularly. The JLouMurph lineup was the very definition of “power trio”, and the J-Mike-George lineup was much more mellow and I think counter-productive at what the songs were going for. So any footage found is always interesting to see (and it seems like a lot of footage from the later era has been popping it a lot more), but I don’t think it’s particularly amazing, and it always blown out of the water why anything with the classic lineup.
Agreed. It was a unique concept, but it doesn’t work with a band like Dinosaur.
They reminded me more of a band like Lemonheads or Gumball but (in my opinion) not as good. Most bands that are claimes to sound like Dinosaur are always more on the Green Mind side than the first three records.
These are what I always took out of them….
I’m waiting, please come by
I’ve got the guts now to meet your eye
These guts are killing, but I can’t stop now
Got to connect with you girl, or forget how
Please want to hang aroundAnd the last lyric is always the one people seem to have trouble with. I’ve heard “leaving them all to wonder what it is we found”, “in the dark I wonder what it is we found”, and “I’ll gawk and wander what it is we found”, etc etc. But I think only J knows for sure 🙂
I got Quest off Amazon for ten dollars once, which was a steal. It obviously wasn’t quite as cool after Green Mind came out with Turnip Farm, Forget It, and Flying Burrito on it, but there’s still some really cool stuff on it. As far as rarity-type collections go, I like it more than Fossils.
J doesn’t use any loop pedal is isn’t the Loop Junkie. It’s the only all analog looper out there, and he’s obviously prefers that. The Boss looper pedals all are very digital and rather plain sounding, and J doesn’t care for it as much.
His Delay is an old Ibanez delay. Forget which one, and he might have changed it, but his delay tone sounds about the same to me.
For the loud parts, he’s probably still using a Fuzz Factory. He doesn’t use any pitch shifter. All the high end squeals come straight from the pedal (a trademark of the FF).
I don’t think he’s changed his rig around much. And besides, the only truly important aspect is the Loop Junkie since there isn’t another pedal that sounds like it.
Anyone heard more about the special deal involving the shirt? I’m torn about buying it online or buying it at my local record store. Obviously I would buy it online if it came with bonus stuff, but I haven’t heard much on it.
I’ve read a few. They always have different authors, and some are very amaturish. Guys just trying to show off their vocabularies, just using information from interviews we’ve already read, etc etc.
I think one on YLAOM is a little odd, since (unless he’s doing interviews with the band), then he’s just going to use information from articles and interviews, which as I said above, most of us have probably already seen. But I am excited to see any new information in the book.
Perhaps he meant second one as in second run? it seems highly unlikely that Fender would do a second J Jazzmaster, let alone one that’s the same color.
When it’s released, if there’s anything other than a different pickguard or something, I will be terribly surprised.
I don’t think it’s a new J Jazzmaster, but simply a reissue of his model.
He just had a normal Crybaby wah back then. What’s interesting though is that J often times had his wah after his big muff instead of before it.
As you may or may not know, most put the wah first in their line of pedals, because it gives it the most sweep and response. Put it after pedals, especially fuzz pedals like the Big Muff, can give some real nasty sounds (Watt’s cover of Maggot Brain showcases this pretty well). That’s probably how J got that sound early on. So I suggest getting a wah, putting it after a nice, loud pedal, turning your amp full on, and just cutting loose

Personally, I don’t think J’s music theory really goes that deep. In his songwriting, especially the early stuff, it really seems like he’s just playing what sounds good rather than anything from a technical standpoint. He’s a very erratic player.
I’m very similar (though obviously not as good), and despite playing for many years and having some degree of musical theory, I can’t really assess the key of songs or what have you. I don’t believe J does, either.
