That sound is very bass heavy. Anyone who loves hearing Lou tear it up will definitely enjoy this.
Thanks for the find.

Agreed. Chill out man.
(As if it didn’t already go without saying) awesome footage.. Weird to see J and Lou speak. Part of me still sometimes wonder if J’s whole gimmick is just an act. Something he plays up to.
never heard that one before….but now that you mention it, some of the songs on Bug do sound like they were recorded with an SG.
This kind of information is hard to come by, but he used the same Jazzmaster for all three records. It was a ’65 (perhaps a ’66). By Bug, he also had others (at least a brown one, as seen in the Just Like Heaven video), though in any live footage I’ve ever seen from the early years, J is always playing his first one 9the sunburst).
For effects, J used a lot of Electro-Harmonix pedals, since they were out of business by the early 80s. Boutique and vintage equipment wasn’t as in demand and cool back then, so J got most of them cheap. He obviously had a Big Muff. You can also hear an Electric Mistress a lot, and by YLAOM, he had a Clone Theory too. His wah was a Crybaby. Nowindays, J has a huge board. But I really don’t think he had much more than this back then. There’s even an old melody Maker interview where J mentions his pedals, which helped shed light on what he had at the time.
He had Marshalls from the beginning. it’s in all old live footage. Playing as loud as they did, J got a lot of natural overdrive, so i don’t think he had any sort of distortion/overdrive/fuzz pedals other than the Big Muff during the first era.
J’s a strange songwriter….J himself has said that he usually writes about made up people and relationships. Lou said J writes "perfect stories" once before. I think he usually just writes stuff that sounds good together. Though some of his songs obviously have a lot of emotion behind them (Not the Same is a good example).
I don’t think he ever did the Lung with solos at an acoustic show. he usually just does the verse as part of a tag to another song. I’m not certain it exists.
Honestly, the way Dinosaur portrays themselves in media sometimes (with J and Lou disliking each other and whatnot), I think they almost play up to it because it’s part of their whole vibe and aura. I think it can be hyperbolic sometimes, but no one except the guys themselves can really say for sure.
I like the Lou forums. I think most of the people there are cool, and there’s usually some interesting discussions. My only gripes lie in the fact that the majority of the people who post are Lou fanatics, and sometimes feels like everything he does is gold/perfect, which obviously isn’t true. They can also accept the brief answers or comments Lou gives as complete fact, when obviously there’s much more to the stories than what might be let on. But Lou himself is cool. Definitely mellowed out, though I still think sometimes he comments about how awkward it is with J, how J doesn’t like bass, etc etc because it’s part of the job, as mentioned above….
But these are tangent topics. I really hope Murph gets better, for his sake.
"Robert" wrote:"Matthoney" wrote:On his forums, Lou said it was rehab. And that makes the most sense, really.
Spence…well, I would’ve loved it if it was George, he is way better than Spence in my ears. But Murph is the only Murph.I have to disagree with you there….I didn’t care much for George. I think Kyle is a lot mroe unique in his style, though the way he plays some Dino songs can annoy me sometimes. And Murph is good, but he’s just mimicking J’s parts. Though he does complete the whole JLouMurph triangle of rock, so he’s got that going for him.
I don’t think this will end Dinosaur. They’ll tread on somehow.
On his forums, Lou said it was rehab.
It’s Kyle Spence….he played in the last touring incarnation of the Fog.
Interesting….I’d like to see what they have for Almost ready, and hopefully we finally get an accurate Thumb tab.
I very much agree. If I really thought about it, I think it might be my favorite post-Lou, pre-reunion Dinosaur record. It’s really deep, quiet, and dark record. Much more than just about any other record in the catalog.
Feel the Pain is probably my least favorite Dinosaur single, but it’s not terrible by any means. I Don’t Think So is such an underrated song. it’s so catchy. And over Your Shoulder is an epic closer. I think it could be a great closer to live shows these days. I think a lot of people tend to forget about it, because it’s usually overlooked as nothing more than the "Feel the Pain" record, and because J doesn’t solo excessively like he tends to do on other records. It helped show J’s strength as a writer in many ways.
All in all, it’s awesome

The Roger Miller pedals sound sick. What kind of qualifications do you have?
