Looks amazing man. Can’t wait to play it.
Yeah, all of the first record and about half of the second (Raisans and In a Jar I know for sure) were recorded with a Gibson Grabber. Lou doesn’t speak kindly of it, but he said it happened to have a good day on the day of recording such songs.
You know, looking at this board and seeing other pics, it really makes me realize how crazy J is. On average, he has at least four fuzz-type pedals. I’ve seen pics with even more. I would love to talk to J and find out how he operates a board such as this, what he keeps on for the whole show, what pedal he uses on what song, what he does for solos, when he combines them, etc etc. It would be epic.
I’m not sure on the Martin. Though it’s more than likely one of their higher end models.
is this the odd acoustic you’re referring to?

‘m not sure the exact model, but I think it’s a Gibson CJ-something. It’s definitely vintage.
J is very specific about bass, or he once was. In Mike Watt’s tour diary with the Fog, he mentions what amps J made him play, what pedals J gave him to use, etc etc. Lou himself says that now J doesn’t care about bass, so at this point maybe J either trusts Lou/doesn’t care enough, so he lets Lou play whatever he wants. But who knows.

This is a thread about it; but if you don’t want to read it all I’ll give a couple quick Lou quotes:
"stolen ..other ricks i tried suck..it’s that simple..even the 4001, though it had a distinctive sound, lacked dynamics..
any quality ricks i saw were in 3-4k range.. i was too heartbroken and too skeptical to just buy a replacement and assume it would work.. new ricks are mediocre at best.. buying one offa e-bay is not an option..
if i’m feeling rich i’d love to buy another one and maybe put precision style pick ups in it.. in my opinion most of the rick fetish comes from the look of the instrument..very few of them are really great..my 4001 was great but it’s gone ..i opted for consistency over aesthetics.. the fender has better low end, hi end ..sustain etc.. it lacks the mid range growl but so do alot of ricks…
not being a collector i didn’t care enough to turn the world upside down trying to find a replacement..""also..i lost the rick in the middle of recording ‘beyond’..it was difficult getting a good sound out of it , it was weird..
though the rick is on over half the songs on that record you can’t hear it , partly because the sound i was getting wasn’t so hot..
it seemed like losing the rick was a sign..the beginning of the new era ..the reunion ‘greatest hits’ part over.. on to new things on a new bass..
but….i think i’m going to start looking for a good rick when i get back to the states.. maybe do some shopping on tour.. i am starting to miss aspects of the sound and design ..(you can play higher up the neck on a rick)"I would definitely recommend reading the thread though. A lot of great info from Lou on basses, what he wrote, the Dinosaur writing process, etc etc. Very interesting.
I’m not a technical guru or anything, but I would have to imagine that a lot of his natural gain/drive comes from the sheer volume they play at. Further, I know that he at one point used to have an OCD overdrive that was on for the entire show. That could be a missing link, perhaps?
Nice! You got a great deal on it. Hope it all works out.
Like Tonas said, J uses Jazzmasters live, but in the studio he uses Teles for leads and solos and a les Paul jr for the rhythm stuff. I seem to recall an interview where J said he used an old fender champ amp to record stuff, but I’m not completely sure on that.
It’s hard to really place what pedals J used on a particular song (especially within the last couple of years) since J is crazy about effects and owns literally hundreds of them. He once said to get different tones, he just hooks a lot of them up and turns them all on. So unfortunately, it’s hard to tell you exactly what he used on any of his songs. However, you really can’t go wrong with a Big Muff. Starting out, that was the only fuzz pedal he had for at least the first three records, and has stayed in his rig since then.
The only possible that comes to my mind is from the first era, in ’87. The had a song Lou sang on that was not a cover (or at least a cover of a song anyone knew). They played it once or twice I think. It’s on Freesofree as "unknown title" from the Charlotte show. if i recall, J even said in an old interview that it was his favorite Lou song. So it’s pretty likely that it was a Lou song that never made it.
Definitely J. Around that time he used to sing really high (listen to other shows from around the era). It might be hard to tell during the verses, but you can tell it’s him on the chorus.
Does anyone know what happened to the videos? Does anyone have them?
Nice. Any pics?
Is it just me, or do they ALWAYS play California? I want them to head to Vegas
