indie bands in the 80’s did’nt have much access to good studio equipment and engineers. The first dino album was recorded in someone’s lounge. Thats why it sounds like shit (the production not the songs). Weezer started off on a major label so they had easy access to advanced studio equipment and engineers. It does’nt mean they were more talented than Dino. They just wrote more accessible songs. Good power pop songs too.

a great show indeed. I think most people at the show were startled by the sheer volume of the band. Honestly, I did’nt expect it to be that loud. It felt like my ears were bleeding. I was pretty much deaf afterwards. I remember J cranking out the lead for the opening song Gargoyle and thinking "What the fuck!".

You dont realize how much of a unique guitarist J is until you see Dinosaur JR live. Make sure you bring earplugs though.

Anyway I think there were technical problems with both J’s and Lou’s vocals. All I heard was a horrible crackle throughout the vocals. Nevermind, the show still kicked ass.

I used to hate Free so Free. when I first heard it I thought it was just a load of J crap. But as time went on I got used to the glossy production and boring song arrangements and now I can say its an OK album. It’s not fucking great but OK. I pretty much like all the songs on the album except for ‘tell the truth’ and the song "free so free" which features fancy guitar soloing but fancy guitar soloing just bores the living fuck out of me.

Yep, I also have YLAOM without the ‘jr’ on vinyl. Must be worth a lot to record collectors. Oh yeah, I dont want to brag but I got my copy signed by J mascis himself after he played a show in wellington. That would have to make it ‘extra rare’

So, I see you like zen archade by husker du. Then there is no doubt you will like Bug (slack, melodic, noise). Make sure you get ‘you’re living all over me’ -essential. If you can find their first LP called "dinosaur" you would have to be stupid not to buy it. "Dinosaur" "YLAOM" and "BUG" are quite different but it capture’s dinosaur jr’s fury and every thing that made them good.

Later dinosaur jr albums ‘green mind’ and onwards are still good but much in a much different level. J mascis matured. But J’s and Lou’s immaturity is part of what made the band great in the first place. So, later Dino albums such as ‘where you been’ aren’t as edgy and are a lot more generic. But still the music is melodic, soulful and everything else that makes music good, It’s just not as mesmerising as the early stuff.

make sure you buy ‘more light’. J’s solo album.

man, thats an interesting picture, What year was it anyway? Mike johnson has grey hair, J is still skinny with black hair but wearing glasses. Is it from the hand it ‘over’ days? when did J start wearing glasses? Am I asking to many queastions? if so what should I do?

the "Mascis was sound asleep" painted a funny picture in my head and made me laugh. Its something I can really imagine J doing after hurting someone. Not bothered at all.

Yes it does sound kind of strange, I remember reading somewhere that J said he hated playing chords because it hurts his fingers, so he spent most his time learning lead parts of rolling stones songs. lots of J’s songs are made up of simple chord progressions (lots of D, G ,C and Em) but J’s rhythm and melodic sense is skillful (eg Ammaring). Does anyone know the chords for ‘flying cloud’ ?. Sounds like chords Ive never used. OK, his guitar work was not sloppy, I was probably trying to say that it was rough (as with the production).

Another amazing thing about Dinosaur is that J has only been playing guitar for no more than a year from what I’ve heard. J’s guitar work is very sloppy on this album but his song writing is very talented. The days when he valued creativity rather than guitar wankfest
