Outside is a fucking terrible song. J had no inspiration whatsover when writing that song. Its pointless, It has a terrible overused guitar melody and uninspired vocal melody. J seems to record whatever melodies he can come up with. The most awful thing about J’s music is his production. I would give more light a 10/10 -the songs are actually pretty damn good. But I give it a 1/10 cos the production ruins it -its so awfull. I cant stand that plastic sound. J’s music only sounds good when it has a raw guitar sound (eg YLAOM, BUG, live stuff), But now the guitars sound so over processed that it does’nt sound like guitars anymore. He’s been doing that since ‘where you been’ and he still doesnt get it. J should start giving lou Barlow credit for once. Lou is probaly laughing in his face right now.
May 28, 2003 at 8:27 pm in reply to: Pictures from the May 24 J- Cobra Verde show in Brooklyn #93828I like the picture of J with the funny facial expression. I always crack up when I see pictures of him. -More pictures please!!!. Im going to upload some of my pictures soon (when I get access to a damn scanner) I cant wait to show you guys a picture of J when hes playing one of his solos -His lips are poking out making him look really half-witted -its really funny.
How far up the front were you? I noticed a few people recording It and I know that I should off too but I did’nt because I’m relly useless. Yeah, pretty cool show I really enjoyed it and it just further proved to me that J is a fucking good musician. J had really funny expressions on his face while playing his solos and I got a pic of one of those expressions. I cant get over how weird he is but I guess he would’nt be J if he was’nt weird. Did you notice he seemed to like purple. He looked so damn awkward and cumbersome when he was sitting on that stool with his distortion pedals. It was really funny but I was too scared of him to laugh though. He just looked so unhappy. Oh yeah, I also noticed that J has lost a bit of weight -he was nowhere as podgy as I thought he would be.
The first time I heard little fury things it blew me away completely and after hearing it hundreds of times it still has the same effect on me. The intro is damn cool, you can really hear the two layers of thick guitar noise made from only two simple chords -amazing. It is defenantly a fucking masterpiece, could be j’s best song (you could argue against that of course ). Do you notice that little fury things and anything else on YLAOM does’nt sound the least bit outdated after 20 years. It never will, no one else has ever written a song like it before so it will always keep its originality. At the moment I have rediscovered repulsion -J really captured the sound of a scabby teenage hermit.
After reading that ‘interview’ link I think its a bit too weird how J is uncomfortable about being compared to Neil Young. Is he a follower or not? I dunno. J is wierd. You guys should listen to ZUMA by Neil Young- I think early dino albums are mostly inspired by this one. J plays solos quite similar to crazyhorse. Maybe J is influenced more by Neils backing band ,crazy horse, rather than Neil himself. I Dunno. J is weird.
Dinosaur_snr, Dinosaur_snr, Hi, Im also from christchurch too. You lucky bastard- Don’t yo know Ive been looking for the first Dino LP for 3 years. Ive tried to get it imported many times but I think homestead records stopped printing it. Cant wait for the reissues.
what a conversation
I like at the end of freakscene where J says "what a mess" – Only 3 words but it means so much.
How can you say that J lost creativity you fucking banana face :slap: :slap:
I like bug
Anthony dosnt like me. No sense of humor – like billy corgan
Sorry, I wrote this bug review as a joke to be amused by negative replies and to confuse you people. Unfortunatly, you people now think I’m an idiot which is’nt worth it coz your replies werent’ angry and negative enough. DAMN!!. Oh yeah, I dont like creed or Linkin park they really blow.
Iv’e actually jammed with j mascis before at a guitar shop in manchester. He is very good and lovess the distortion pedal
Ive got the 2002 release of bug and it has a special remix track of freakscene. It is remixed by perry Farrell who also put in some vocals in it and it sounds really danceable. Ive heard it playing in some dance parties. It is probably going to hit the top UK teen charts.
Can anyone answer this. How come j mascis looks so old when he is only in his late 30’s. Ive got no problem with it I just think it’s a bit weird. He seemed to change from a young rocker to a neil young in just a couple of years from 1997 to 2000.
