well, here it is …
In 1987, when J Mascis was 21 years old, he used a little something called You’re Living All Over Me to unwittingly write the next decade of indie rock and make some musicians other than himself very famous. He sees what most don’t, or what others consider nothing, and with the vehicle of rock, he can pump up this mediocrity and every day riff raff into very human elements. Dinosaur Jr was, by most accounts, phoning it in during the ‘93-’97 home stretch before ending with Hand It Over, a relatively strong divorce. The next three years of deafening silence gave way in 2000 to J Mascis + The Fog’s More Light; it’s follow-up is an elecrtic metal/folk storm that might raise questions about the validity of Queens Of The Stone Age. Conspicuously absent of More Light guests like Kevin Shields and Robert Pollard, Free So Free is nonetheless a continuum of J Mascis Mach II – a show of artistic rejuvenation after weathering that asshole of alterna-apathy that we remember as the ‘90s.
To confuse matters more, MAGNET’S conversation with Mascis veered away from the new album and into past waters and current misrepresentations.

We are going to get back together and do another handful of gigs. The name started as Asheton Watt and Mascis, arouns the same time we were invited by Sonic Youth to do All Tomorrow’s Parties. Then Ron (Asheton) had a t-shirt made that says Asheton Asheton Watt and Mascis, which I think is kind of a mouthful.What’s your worst tour experience ?
Easily Lollapaloza ‘93. That was the last straw for (Dinosaur Jr drummer) Murph; he was done after that one. It was like waking up every day in a summer camp that you really didn’t want to be a part of, and we were treated like kids in that it felt as though we were punished when we weren’t “good.â€those reviews are just too sweet !
... why can’t all reviews/reviewers be like this ? un-jaded … un-cynical … un-sneering and all that negative stuff that so many reviewers feel compelled to write … or … i don’t know … i mean if you really feel strongly in a negative way about something you shouldn’t force it and say you like it or anything … but i get the feeling that for a lot of writers/reviewers it makes them far cooler not to commit themselves to liking something …

… that must have been amazing … so glad j still plays songs from ALL his albums …yep … i was asking about the t-shirts and i’m glad to hear they have black ones too … i wonder if they have small ones though … usually they’re so big that i fork out the money and my husband gets to wear them

i talked to my parents a few days back and they said snow was predicted in the DC area, but that’s crazy …hope they reschedule soon … shouldn’t be that big a deal for the guys b/c they don’t live that far away … relatively speaking in US distances that is, right ?

i’ve come to the conclusion that j always looks shocked and confused when someone who doesn’t know him goes up and talks to him … but that’s cool, i guess it’s just his way …
i originally bought it on tape and i played it so many times it eventually warped
but it was no wonder really b/c that 1st summer it came out i think my friends and i played it every single day w/o fail … so whenever i think of it i think of bakingly hot summer days and road trips to the beach at watch hill in RI and that sort of thing … nice… i have another copy now on cd and i guess it had been a year or so since my original tape finally bit the dust and when i bought my new copy and somehow the whole album just seemed so much slower than i had remembered … that was kind of weird … but anyhow … it’s a great album from beginning to end …

by the way … his i think his girlfriend’s name is spelled "luisa" … i am only pointing this out just in case you were going to include her in the card … you know ?
