I was gonna try to build a superfuzz about a year ago, but I never finished the project. I gathered up most of the parts before i realized it was going to be pretty big electronics project for someone who can barely solder a few wires… It has like 50 capacitors and tranzisters and whatnot.

There’s a Mudhoney site that tells you how to do it. I think I had it bookmarked somewhere…

here it is…

Good luck to anyone who attempts this!

My superfuzz project currently takes up space as a bag of electronic parts. I still think it would be cool to build one. Maybe I’ll finish it eventually when I have the time…

I think J’s been known to use the superfuzz on occasion. It would be awsome to make one for him, especially if you could actually do it successfully.

I’ve always liked the one on Thumb the best. It’s a very sad sounding solo and always gives me chillbumps.

It’s funny because Thumb is probably one of J’s simplest songs – it’s pretty much just two chords – but the solo has a really unique sound because it’s in like a different mode than what you would expect. From a my guitar geek’s perspective, the song is in D and C but in the solo he seems to switch into like a G major scale. It’s almost more like a jazz thing. Very cool.

Maybe some bigger guitar geek out there can tell me what you call the mode that solo is played in. Like mixolydian or something like that… J’s got lots of different modes!

It’s still the feel and the emotion of the solo that really makes it good, so I should just shut up about analyzing it.

hmmm… maybe I should be posting this stuff over in the guitar forum.

Thanks again for all the Murph info. I’ll have to check out some of those bands.

I just found a Mike Watt diary entry from ’98 about "Wank Factor 7 and Rising". J was involved and it was definitely fronted by some guy named Kurt. He has some good descriptions of the band.

Take a look here:
Mike Watt’s hootpage

Also, I noticed Kurt Fedora is on Drawerings on the Martin & Me album and that is definitely a live acoustic appearance from around 1995 when J did some solo acoustic shows. I saw him do one of those at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor and it was really good. It was just J though. It was cool to see J at a really small venue just playing acoustically. The set was similar to what appears on Martin & Me. Some of the songs on there might be from that show but it doesn’t say. Does anyone have the info about what performances are on there?

Anyway, I guess that kills all the Kurt Fedora/Cobain theories, or at least someone else decided to pretend to be Kurt Fedora after Cobain died.

Maybe I can revive some "Paul is dead" rumors instead.

later,

The name "Hand it Over" suggests the songs may have been sitting around for awhile… It was on a major label, which wouldn’t be in a hurry to put the disc out, so it wouldn’t be surprising if there was a delay of a year or so before Reprise put it out after J had handed it all over.

It says 1996 Spam the bread Music, so the album was finished at least as early as 96. So it seems easily possible that he may have gotten started around ’94 when Kurt Cobain was still alive.

I’m just saying it seems feasible…

Thanx Maxini for the Murph info!
