Hey Tom,

When I was in college, I had a big crush on a guy who lived in my dorm. He was a rich boy from Atlanta; can guarantee he never looked twice at me. But he landed a show on the college station, along with another guy from our dorm, and they split up their airtime so it was half "indie rock" and half "hardcore". It’s so lame, but part of the reason I dug Clark so much was his thick southern drawl; I used to tape their radio show, but hit pause during the actual music, so I had a good half hour of just him talking.

I visited the station a couple times during their show. It was really small and outsiders weren’t allowed in, but we snuck in anyway. A bunch of my guy friends decided to form this fake band called Grass Mantis, and Clark set up a mock interview which they deadpanned all the way through. It was totally improvised and totally funny, really mimicking the other snooty college shows around at the time. The Grass Mantis had a washboard player, 8 tracks of keyboards, and their main influences were D. Boon and John Fogerty.

So that’s my little story. Last time I saw Clark, he was going to Germany for a year, and his parents were building a recording studio onto the house for him. Musta been nice. But he did always sneak stuff out of the college station for me to copy. And he was a big Dino fan. Ah well.

      take care

I’m sorry; I know this is kind of irrelevant, but reading this cracked me up.

After I saw the Fog in April, I was standing outside in the rain, waiting for my ride. Some really young kid came up to me and was trying to make conversation; he was like, "Who played tonight?" And I said "J Mascis". The kid kind of looked at me funny, then said, "What is that, some rap shit?"

                  ~welcome aboard brady~

Catcher in the Rye really messed with my neuroses…but then Salinger is a pretty neurotic guy. Still alive, if I’m not mistaken? Hiding out somewhere? I remember hearing recently that an old girlfriend of his was auctioning off his love letters to her.

My favorite Salinger, of the few that I’ve read, was in "Nine Stories"; I think it was called "Daphne De Maurier’s Blue Period". Less depressing than Catcher, and (in my opinion) more sophisticated.

Congratulations to all you guys on your teaching pursuits/successes. I myself am a casualty of public education, & it is so refreshing to see creative and inspired people going into that field (especially language arts…way too little of that these days).

I majored in English in hs and college, because I love the language, but found that (for some reason) my English classes were the ones I enjoyed the least. And also, everyone assumed that I wanted to teach, because that was my major.

It’s tough to be a high school teacher, much less a good one, when you’re surrounded by so many people who don’t take the profession seriously.

I wish you all the best of luck…and as I said before, I think it’s RAD that the punk generation is now going into the classroom to teach! All my high school teachers were victims of soft rock.

The best to you, & again, welcome,

                  Rosa

There’s quite a difference between having a dissenting opinion and just throwing insults around.

We hardly tiptoe around each other here. A lot of us do disagree about things; we have different viewpoints; but we’re all friends so it’s cool. Just because we’re respectful in our posts doesn’t mean we’re "fearful of disturbing anyone".

                      Hi~

I couldn’t come up with ten; really weren’t a lot of new releases that appealed to me this year. But here’s my short list:

                      The Black Crowes- Lions
                      Tori Amos- Strange Little Girls
                      Missy Elliott- Miss E…So Addictive
                      Dolly Parton- Little Sparrow
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds- No More Shall We Part
Mighty Blue Kings- Alive in the City

and finally….if I may quote the editors at CDNow

quote

                      Quote:
Although the stellar country and bluegrass soundtrack O Brother, Where Art Thou? was released in December 2000, it made such a surprisingly tremendous impact on music in 2001, we thought better than to rule it out based on a small technicality.

                      O Brother takes the cake.

There are also some I suspect are good but haven’t had a chance to hear, like John Frusciante’s "To Record Only Water", Buddy Guy’s "Sweet Tea", and of course the Tenacious D album.

In accordance with what Salami said, there may still be one or two good releases in December (though I’m not aware of any at this time)…so I may come back once more to edit.

                          Hey now,

In all politeness, all the people who complain that the boards are "dead" or that they "suck" should create their own threads. Why wait for someone else to post something you find worthy of a response? No need to attack those of us who are enjoying ourselves. It’s kinda insulting.

                            Good stories Salamiguy.

You reminded me of this interview with Diamanda Galas that came out a few years ago.

quote:
Goblin: Well we hope you get through the Christmas season okay, everyone seems so depressed this time of year.

Galás: Well they should be, if you have to go to a drug store and listen to some fucking soul singer singing jingle bells it’s enough to make you want to blow your head off. It’s very, very vile. I said that to the clerk today at the drugstore and she looked at me in horror. "I’m shopping at your store, I’m a customer, please turn those jingle bells down. I find it hurtful and offensive." She told me I should thank God for my good fortune.

One of my favorite "doesn’t fit" occasions was about a year ago (I think I mentioned this in another thread, but it’s amusing enough to repeat). My first NBA game; the Golden State Warriors vs the Lakers, and the Warriors cheerleaders did a routine to "The Beautiful People" by Marilyn Manson. I didn’t quite get the basketball tie-in, but it was definitely entertaining.
