Hey bob & Jaron,
Harrison Bergeron sounds about right. I caught the movie on tv (not sure which one; didn’t know there were 2) maybe a year ago or so.
Thanks so much for your help.

RosaI had a dream last night that I was driving through this little town, where there was lots of snow on the roads. I saw J walking up the sidewalk. He went into his house (it was a yellow townhouse with a wreath on the door). I circled the block once; then he came out of the house and got into his car– a burgundy colored Jaguar– and drove away.

Quote:Frankly , it was her beauty that made her fragile , kinda like too soft to touch you know .That’s funny; I hear a lot of my guy friends say that about the pretty girls.
I think that we ugly girls (or at least, those of us who were repeatedly accused of being ugly throughout childhood) are stronger in character. But I’m generalizing. People who go through crap like that as a kid; well, some of them become serial killers, & others choose to let it make them more sympathetic and compassionate people.
I myself find that I’m not as intimidated by good looking people as I am by really smart people. Really smart guys make my knees shake. It’s a mixed blessing.
Now, where’s that horny remover…

Rosarandom interjections, if I may
1- I own no Modest Mouse
2- I think I’ve heard them twice
3- my sister worked at a coffee shop in Seattle; one of the MM bandmembers was a regular customer. According to her, he was not only a jerk to the employees, but he enjoyed flashing his expensive clothes
4- I like Pearl Jam
5- another story from my sis: Creed were on a radio show in Seattle, and one of the members said, "Eddie Vedder just WISHES he could write lyrics like Scott [or whatever the guy’s name is]". Keep in mind that this was in Vedder’s home town. For the rest of the week, that was the radio station’s favorite sound clip.
6- I don’t think the current pop formula is "Pearl Jam-esque"; I would say it’s more Korn-esque or Stone Temple Pilots-esque. Either way, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and crap is still crap.
7- I wouldn’t say non-dino fans hate MM; I’ve met several people who like MM but don’t listen to dino.<blockquote><font>quote
Quote:Why can`t we call these terms rock music and leave it like that.agreed. I basically refer to stuff as rock, country, jazz, techno, or classical. Occasionally I’ll run into something that is kinda in between; ya know, not wholly any of those…and that means it’s time for me to step in & describe what it sounds like. You know, using more than one word.

RosaHi Cale,
I was going to refer you to one of my old posts from last year; Jeremiah hosted some pictures for me. But when I pulled it up they were gone; he must’ve taken em down. Sorry
Tony have you checked your email lately?

RosaHow cool is it that our kids are going to have teachers who are Dinosaur Jr fans? Man.
I seem to remember that J was born in ’65, which would make him 36 this year, the old fart

RosaHey Allison,
Totally with you on the Gap commercials. I wonder if any of those (seemingly liberal) artists are aware of the Gap’s seedy sweatshop reputation. Think they would still do the commercials? (The one that hurt the most was the one with Dwight Yoakam….I love Dwight…it brought a tear to my eye)
Speaking of pop music & sporting events, the NBA often uses a frightening interpretation of "Higher Ground" by the RHCP during the intros/outros.
Coolest thing was, I went to my first NBA game last year, and the Golden State Warriors’ cheerleaders did a routine to "The Beautiful People" by Marilyn Manson. It was so ghetto; it rocked my socks. They were beastly looking women, too, which made it even better.
take care,
RosaHey Tones,
Pretty crafty with the calendar, you are.
I didn’t even know there was a calender function until today. And so of course I went to my profile, and it said that I was born in January 2001. Heh heh heh.
My b-day’s not in November; Mattman is the crazy Scorpio, not me. Mine’s August 9th, same as Jeremiah’s. And Jeremiah’s dad. And Gillian Anderson.

Quote:Children don’t have parents and family anymore , they are more impressioned by what they see in pop culture .You’re so right on, Tone. Every day I find a good reason to raise my kids (if I ever have any) without tv. I mean, I really believe that part of being a parent is educating your children, rather than shielding them, so that they can objectively consider the world & make up their own minds about things. But god, sometimes I’m really mortified by the stuff being shown on tv.
I panic when I think about raising a kid, and lately I’m leaning far far away from the idea! I turned on The Sopranos one night because I wanted to see what all the hype was about, and the first thing I saw was a graphic scene of a woman being raped. And even basic station programming, all the cop shows and shit, is so incredibly violent and vulgar and shallow.
I walked through the junior’s department at Macy’s recently, and it was all skimpy halter tops and ass-tight pants. It kinda made me sick to my stomach.
Maybe this war we’re in will make people reconsider their obsession with death and sex.
But back to the original issue of celebrity…I think it would be difficult to actually BE one precisely because of what it has come to represent. When I think celebrity, I think red carpet, expensive clothes, plastic surgery, boring talk shows. It’s no longer about your talent or the quality of your art, and that’s gotta be sad if you become a famous actor/musician. To know that people just want to know what you’re wearing this week, and who you’re sleeping with. I can see why people get fed up with the paparazzi, and the fame in general. In no other profession are the successful so hunted, dehumanized, and obsessed over. I imagine it would be quite difficult to maintain your sanity, much less your identity irrespective of your career.
And finally, is anyone familiar with the Vonnegut story I mentioned earlier?
xo
RosaYes, the holidays do make people so very warm and friendly. Believe me; I’ve worked my share in retail. People are very selfish and impatient. It’s like, you know that the lines are gonna be long; why not just give yourself extra time? If you know what to expect you can plan accordingly.
And on a side note, I think that all the stock "experts" are buffoons for predicting a slow shopping season. If anything, we’re all drawing closer to our loved ones and becoming more generous.
xo
RosaThere’s this story that Kurt Vonnegut wrote, a futursitic tale where all the ordinary citizens wear special headsets that keep their brains at a steady, mediocre level of intelligence. They are controlled by a small group of people who live, headset-free, in a big compound, having forfeited their former lives so that they could be in charge. Whorehouses are replaced by Thought houses; instead of paying for sex, you pay a girl to play chess with you and read great texts on philosophy.
Anyone remember the name of that? It escapes me at the moment.

Quote:I think that people with certain values and priorities in life tend to gravitate towards certain types of music/literature/film etc. I don’t think these things define the person as much as they often reflect his/her world/life view.I was thinking about this, and I partly agree…but if you’ll humor me Mat, let me engage a little friendly debate here …
A) music can be one of two things– it can be relative to you & your situation, or it can just be ear candy. In my instance, for example, there are days that call for Pearl Jam and Manson and there are days that call for a little Ludacris.
B) by your logic, people who have different values should prefer different kinds of music. But weirdly, that’s not always the case. Why do both rich frat boys & girls (with trust funds) and poor black kids enjoy Rage Against the Machine, for example? Why does Kid Rock appeal to both conservative rednecks and liberal thrillseekers? Lots of times, people with different values like the same music for different reasons.
I think that music is different things to different people. To some it’s just danceable, to some it’s therapeutic/sympathetic/cathartic; to some it’s both.
I know I’m leaving a lot out; it’s just such a complex issue. Hard to wrap my brain around everything at once. Would love to discuss more, if you wish.
take care
