SOME of the best songs of all time:
Moon River
Peter Gunn
I Put a Spell on You
Cry Me a River
House of the Rising Sun
Love Me
Let My People Go
Nature Boy
Baltimore Oriole
That Old Black MagicWith regard to these best-ever lists, I think people tend to vote for what they THINK they SHOULD vote for, and what they think will stand the test of time. Which is not totally dishonest voting, but can be a little poorly thought-out.
It’s like how Citizen Kane tops the film lists year after year. It’s a sentimental favorite because it was innovative and accomplished, but it was also a kickass movie that people continue to enjoy.
A song isn’t voted "the best" because the band is popular, but rather because people view it as important music. Sometimes it’s important because it’s a great song that sets a standard of artistic innovation; other times, it’s important because it sets a standard of popular success. Does that make sense?

Hey Salamiguy,
I know a couple people who have the mega-changers, and I think they’re kind of a waste of money, unless you really find the act of manually switching cds daily to be a chore.
Even in smaller disc changers, dirt can and will eventually build up inside. I hesitate to leave even 2 or 3 discs in the machine at once for that reason; also, even if you are diligent about cleaning a mega-changer, it would kinda be a pain in the ass to have to take out & then reload 300 cds.
But if you’re going for the home-jukebox effect, and you have some way of keeping track of the order of the albums, I guess it’s not totally unreasonable. And in that case I would suggest investing in some neon lights and buttons to fully manifest the potential of the thing. Perhaps you could even charge your friends a quarter?

(missing mantis)Fiona Apple- Across the Universe (can’t stand John Lennon’s flat, nasaly voice)
Tori Amos- 97 Bonnie & Clyde
Marilyn Manson- I Put a Spell on You (not necessarily BETTER than Screamin’ Jay, but definitely measures up)
Diamanda Galas- I Put a Spell on You (ditto)
Diamanda Galas- The Thrill is Gone
Marilyn Manson- Five to One (MM have always reminded me of the Doors anyway; it was cool to hear them cover this song)
Stevie Ray Vaughan- Voodoo Chile
Janis Joplin- Me & Bobby McGee
Reverend Horton Heat- Five-O Ford (it’s a discreet cover of ‘Hot Rod Lincoln’ by Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen; I think there was an even earlier version but I’m not sure who did it)
Nirvana- Where Did You Sleep Last Night
Pearl Jam- Last Kiss
Pearl Jam- Sonic Reducer
Pearl Jam- Soldier of Love
LeAnn Rimes- Blue
Godhead- Eleanor Rigby
The Animals- I Put a Spell on You

me- Can’t We Move This

Anybody else see the Target commercial with "Speeding Motorcycle" in it? It’s all about how "you always remember your first leather jacket"

Rosa"Rubber Duckie" by Ernie, off the Sesame Street Gold album I had as a child. ‘Rubber duckie, you’re the one / you make bathtime lots of fun’
Jebus, there is a great band from North Carolina called the Flat Duo Jets; they do a rockin’ version of "Froggie Went A-Courtin".
Also, if you’re indeed looking for music for the kiddies, I would suggest "Free to be You and Me" by Marlo Thomas; also, Ladysmith Black Mambazo did a beautiful children’s album a while back.

RosaI hate to get off topic, but Billy Corgan seems too self-centered to dedicate an entire album title to tearing down one of his musical peers.
Billy Corgan is a Pisces as well, lest we forget.
Courtney is a psycho. On a funny note, I have a friend who maintains that she killed Kurt because he wouldn’t let her be in the band. Sick, I know, but would you really be surprised?

Rosap.s. being self-centered is not always a bad thing; just making my point.

Hey Salamiguy,
Jimi Hendrix was "discovered" by Chas Chandler of the Animals, but he was the bass player, not the drummer.
Do I get a gold star??

RosaActually, Slash has a white dad and a black mother. So probably he has a well-balanced posterior. hehehe…

can’t believe I’m posting this,
RosaHey all,
That "When I Was Young" cover you’re talking about; are you referring to the song originally done by the Animals? Or is it a different song?
I was raised on the Animals & am just curious.
I would brave Axl’s spandex-clad little no-butt anyday to get to Slash. Sometimes you just have to keep your priorities in order. Axl is a bonehead; I could kick that no-butt anyway.
I’m also pleased to hear Duff McKagen is still alive; last time I saw him, in some guitar magazine, he looked like crap. All bloated, like his nosering was ready to pop off his face.
take care,
RosaMy favorite has always been the Santana’s Greatest Hits cover (the black man holding the dove); don’t know why but I always find myself staring at it in record stores.
I also have this album that’s a compilation of different artists covering Henry Mancini’s songs; the cover is a picture of Rose McGowan sitting at a bar, holding a gun. I love it.
When I was little I used to play with my parents’ copy of Some Girls by the Rolling Stones. The album cover was a bunch of hairdos with the faces cut out; the record sleeve itself was printed with all different faces so you could mix & match them with the hairdos. I apparently used to drag it around the house. I don’t know whether the cd has the same cutouts but I kind of doubt it.

Hi Salamiguy,
I’m with you on Holly Cole; prefer her more jazz-oriented style as well.
You reminded me of one of my favorite performers, Diana Krall, whom I believe is also Canadian. (She sings mostly standards & rocks them hard!)

RosaHey Jaron,
I loved the Monkees! I had a bunch of tapes in elementary school that I played incessantly. Still think they’re great! I also used to watch the tv show at the babysitter’s.
Sometime when you are bored, listen to "The Dope Show" by Marilyn Manson, then "Stepping Stone" by the Monkees… the chorus chords are the same.
