just watched "son volt : live from austin, TX"
…….sweet
……..dunno if these have been mentioned here yet, but son volt’s new album drops March 06th…it’s titled "The Search". i’ve heard 2 tracks so far and both sound great. one of them ("the picture" i think it’s called) has an almost e street band vibe to it, with some big horns and some keyboard…can’t wait to hear the rest of it! then on may 15 the new one from wilco arrives…"Sky Blue Sky". i’ve heard a few of the tracks played live, but as wilco fans know, what i heard on the stage could be a far cry from what appears on the album……i’m totally pumped up for both of these records. the last 2 respective records from these bands both rocked my world…here’s hoping for more of the same……
Quote:…I just read two autobiographical Louis Armstrong books, first Satchamo, my life in New Orleans, tells the tail of Louis’ early life growing up poor as dirt in the south, it was well written and not like a polished auto-biogrphy written with help from a accomplished author, this book was belted out by the man with his own two hands, thus it is a bit rough around the edges but makes for a more real expierence. Next was Louis Armstrong, In his own words, which was a collection of his writing from essays to letters to magizene articles to proposed chapters to a sequel to Satchamo, the only issue i had with the two books was that he contridicts himself in some of his stories for instance how he got his first cornet, in Satchmo it was at reform school, and then in his own words he speaks of getting it from his bosses he delivered coal for and even saving money for it in another story, beyond that this writing is so powerful in it’s simplicity and passion much like his music……currently i am reading Lord Chesterfield’s letters to his son, it is a collection of letters from Lord Chesterfield to his illigiamate son, circa 1700’s and they are packed with advice from how to behave around royality to how to woo women, interesting stuff…
………..i hate to be the Grammar Police…….but, man…………that whole post has only one period. that’s a whole lot to say in just 2 sentences
.i have never been much of a Satchmo fan, but the books sound pretty cool. if you had to recommend only one of them, which would it be? also, if yer a fan of that genre, definitely check out "Beneath the Underdog" by charles mingus…..it’s a really quick read, and highly entertaining
.hey robert, the live album ("With Strings: Live at Town Hall") that eels dropped last year is great……
that’s fucking awesome, tubby. they put on one of the best live shows (including all genres and venues) that i have ever seen (certainly in my top 5). it was at a smoky little place called Grafitti in the ‘burgh back in about 1990. i was completely blown away. curt blew the fucking roof off of that place………
thanks robert……i’ll letyou know how it works..(if itworks…dunno if the tweedy is somehow unburnable). btw….for any fans of wilco and/or jeff tweedy…….if you haven’t checked out "sunken treasure" do yerself a favor and treat yerself to some sweet, sweet ear candy.
hehe…..sorry to let you down, robert…but my current avatar is actually me
and yes, that is a painting……pretty fucking cool,eh?new Grant Lee Phillips album dropping on March 27th.titled "Strangelet"…….
……..this is one of my favorite Chuck Close paintings…..it’s a self portrait. his realism always blows me away….
