I think from that era, Sonic Youth has a better (although still pretty slim) chance. SY always got more critics swooning. That said, I would love to see Dino inducted. It always drives me nuts when people say the Pixies invented the whole loud, quiet, loud thing on Surfa Rosa… It’s from the same era, and they’re both from Boston, but You’re Living All Over Me was first. Dinosaur should get at least some of the credit!
Just got home from work and my copy was waiting for me. I’m spinning it for the first time right now… So far, I love it. It sounds better than any of the boots I have from the same era. Great stuff!
Thank you @sloansimpson for another great recording!! The show was awesome (as always). One of the best things about Atlanta/Athens Dino/Mascis shows is we usually get a great souvenir from Sloan!
I’m bummed that they’re not playing the 40 Watt! I might have to drive to Nashville if I want to see 2 shows. I almost take it for granted that there will be an Athens show on every tour.
Awesome! Thank you. I’m downloading right now… can’t wait to listen.
Thank you! That’s a really good recording.
Last night we crossed Luckie street headed to the Tabernacle and walked past some guy standing on the corner. Right after we passed him, I had a weird moment of recognition. It was Lou. We were going to ask him to sign our tickets, but before we got our nerve up, a cab pulled up and his wife got out with their baby. I didn’t want to bother him when he had his wife and baby with him… he might think I’m creepier and sicker than I actually am and panic.
I am condemned to only having the opportunity to meet Dino members in awkward situations (like J getting in line for the bathroom behind me at Smiths Old Bar).I’m sure Lou could see us stalking in the background trying to get our nerve up to go talk to him. He sort of heads our way towards the back of the club and we’re watching the whole time. Then right in front of Lou, my wife screams, "Oh my God, there’s J" and points. I was kind of embarrassed as I bet Lou hates that! And there J was hanging out on the back porch of the Tabernacle having a beer with some people.
Dino kicked ass. The Black Keys were very good too, but Dino was really impossible to follow. They played pretty loud (ears ringing still) and the set was very different from the last 3 times. A lot of new songs (which sounded great) and some mid–period too (Out There and Feel the Pain). Great stuff. We were really close to the stage and where we were, the crowd seemed really into it the whole time. Excellent show, I wish it could have been longer. They had some cool new shirts on the merch table too… Best one was a Green Mind mock-up with the smoking little giirl now a space alien. I didn’t make a set list so unfortunately I can’t help with that… They definitely played "This is all I came to do".
I picked up Rubber Factory over the weekend and I’ve been playing it over and over. I’m surprised I’ve never heard the Black Keys before. I ordered tickets for the Tabernacle show. I still hope Dino swings through the south again and plays some headlining sets. But since I can’t get to NY for the Irving Plaza shows, I’ll take what I can get!

But I don’t think I could stomach having to watch Dino as an opener especially after I’ve seen them/J headline 6 times. I live 5 1/2 to 6 hours away from the closest show and I had planned on taking some time off work and catching several show but I’m not going to do that now.
I live right in midtown Atlanta, but I still don’t think I’m going to go. I have seen J/Dino many times over the years, but never as an opener. The abbreviated set would automatically be a let down. The opening slot makes good sense though… It’s a chance to promote the new album to a room full of people that haven’t already bought it. Plus… Dino has been playing The Variety Playhouse on their last couple stops through Atlanta. The Tabernacle is a much bigger room. I’d be pissed if they just played for 30 minutes!

What the crap is that? I don’t want to drive roughly 6 hours to each show to see them open up. This is so disappointing.Huge bummer! I would totally buy tickets for the Atlanta show if Dino was the headliner. Are the Black Keys any good?
Oddly… I was just on Amazon.com and it looks like the domestic editions of More Light and Free so Free are out of print as well. I know J isn’t a huge pop star/celebrity, but he definitely seems popular enough to keep his albums in print. Maybe there are reissues coming…
I really tried to exercise restraint and not download this album. May isn’t that far off. Well, I failed. I decided to just try and find it out of curiousity… Once I found it, I couldn’t help myself. It was like Christmas coming early. I don’t feel too guilty. I have most of the dino albums on vinyl and cd. There are quite a few that I have on vinyl and 2 copies on cd (SST/Merge remasters, Sire/Rhino remasters). I will definitely buy the album when it comes out and no doubt spend a fortune on concert tickets and travel expenses (not that the band will profit from the money I give cheap motels).
The leaked version is not pristine… The sound quality is not perfect. I’m not sure what the source is, but I expect the official release to sound much better. Either way, it’s an amazing album. It’s everything we’ve been waiting for and more. I agree with the other people who compared the sound to More Light era Mascis. There is definitely an element of that. It also sounds a bit like late era dino, but played by the original band. Most importantly, the songs are there. I think big fans will be more than satisfied.
Here’s what I hope they do (if they want to move some units)… First off, move up the release date. They might sell more copies to casual fans if they act fast on this leak. This is a really early leak. I don’t know if waiting 2 months to get the official product out there is a good idea. Second… Copy what the New York Dolls did last year. I already had a copy of the New York Dolls reunion album. However… If you went to the show, they were selling the cd. If you bought the cd at the show, you got a coupon allowing you to stay after the show and get your cd signed by the band. Everyone should be copying this! Bands could move a lot of cds by offering a little meet and greet and autographs. Sure I downloaded it, but I’ll buy it the day it comes out, and I would buy one at the show for the chance of getting autographs.
$.02
I always thought it was…
please excuse it for gettin high
What happened to "Show Me The Way"? It looks like they added "Just Like Heaven" to You’re Living All Over Me but took the Frampton cover off.
Hmmm.
Thanks for the info! One of my friends finally gave up on me figuring it all out for myself and he gave me a tutorial on what to download and in what order etc.
What a great recording! I remember when I used to pay a lot of money for stuff like this… and it wasn’t that long ago!
