I disagree…money on most guitars is just for a name or location of assembly. I mean, a Jazzmaster is the poster-guitar for the argument. You buy a $1400 guitar and INSTANTLY have to change out parts to make it functional. The bridge is horrible. It blows me away that Fender still hasn’t corrected it for the sake of "keeping true to the original."
I play a Squire Jagmaster, I set it up myself and it’s help. I changed out the humbuckers with GFS Dream 90s and it sounds killer. All together, I spent $350 to have a guitar that I would carry into any battle with me.
On the converse, I have a Squire 51 I had to change the bridge out on to get it right. The stock one was trash. But on a $100 guitar, what do you expect? Gibson makes some awesome double cutaway les pauls that comes with P-90s. They’re like $650-700. G&L makes a Jazzmaster ripoff that is nice, they’re like $450-500.
In my opinion and a lot of the people I know, yes. They’re basically overwound single coils, so they cut through and have some balls to them. It’s not muddy like a humbucker and not super thin like a normal single coil.
Yeah, Humbuckers KILL Big Muffs…I felt totally ripped off after buying a Big Muff because it sounded so bad…then I got my Dream 90 in for my Jagmaster and it is my favorite fuzz now.
They make some Squire Teles that come with P-90s that are pretty fun. It all depends on available funds. They make some low-end Gibsons that have P-90s. Nothing beats a P-90 style pickup.
I loved it. Looked more like a kickass bootleg than the 500 camera change garbage most bands release. You felt like you were seeing it. I got it in last night and sat the family down to watch it. Had a proud parent moment as my 7 year old yelled out "Hey! Isn’t that the guy from Sebadoh we met?"
The interviews were funny…all those dudes are real spacy. Steve Albini was the only one who didn’t go "ummm…errr….uhhhh…" for over half of the air time. The World Cafe part was my favorite: "So why did Lou leave?"

The question is: If Lou and J get in a fight or something and Lou leaves, will J continue on with Dinosaur, Jr. He could bring Mike Johnson back and then it’d be Dino pt. 2 …they could tour and do Green Mind, Where You Been, etc.
This will be an epic little jaunt. I’m hoping to get passes so I can get all of us some killer shots. The Black Keys slay.
I thought D Boon was a fine guitarist. While he never really played leads super long, what he did do was killer. Most of the SST bands were solid guitar bands. Greg Ginn of Black Flag was nuts. I can pick out a lot of J’s stuff, but Greg is so off-the-wall that it’s hard sometimes. A lot of it is his fuzzed out tone, but still…
As far as the Hendrix/J comparison, I feel I’ve been influenced by both in my life. Hendrix’s career was so short that it’s hard to know where he would have gone, if anywhere. I think J has been really prolific in his playing. Hendrix and J are both capable of bringing some major chops, but Hendrix had a flamboyancy that pushed it over the top. I’ve stood inches from J as he played, it was killer, but I wasn’t taken back by his manerisms and he didn’t appear to be overly put out playing. Hendrix looks like his whole soul is into everything he played. On video I was moved.
Of course, J’s ability to look so calm and sometimes downright un-interested while tearing off some leads I couldn’t touch could be a sign of his ability. Just like anything, they have weaknesses and strengths in different areas. I’m glad it’s no contest and I can rock out to both at will.
I will finish the tab this weekend…the 7th fret thing helps as I had a hard time picking out the chords…the chorus was easy enough…
Yeah, you can hear a cell ringing in it. Right at the end. I thought someone’s phone went off when I first heard it, but it was on the album. Perhaps it rang during a totally awesome take and they wanted to keep it? Perhaps just for a personal laugh.
I’ve got a Shure Beta SM87a. They’re good mics.
I know Peavey made a "Diamond" series microphone, but I’ve never heard of a company called Diamond…and I use A LOT of microphones.
Good interview.
Ooops…they played a new song, I got it mixed up. Thanks, I’ll fix it.
I’m the first to admit, I’ve owned III and Bakesale…the rest was just like "Sweet…"
They were totally awesome here in Houston. Really friends and nice. Ajay played around with my 6 year old son I brought and even had him come up and play tambourine on a song at the end of their set. I think he’s a cool guy to do that.
Yeah, the JCM 800s are blowing my mind. I bought one in 1998 for $300 used from Mars Music, I loved it, but it was super clean and needed pedals to get distortion, etc. I kept this amp for a long time, I loved it. Then I had my second kid at age 21 and needed some extra money for co-pays, etc. So I sold it. $650 on eBay…go me.
I’m at Guitar Center this weekend and see one. "I wonder how much that is going for, I wouldn’t mind having one of those again?"
$1599.99
Seriously? I mean, I dug that amp, but I can get the same tone out of a new tube amp at a fraction of the price. I honestly couldn’t believe it. I just kept thinking "Damn, if I had that now, I could get some major money…bummer."
"AAAAAAAA " wrote:Is that supposed to be a joke?Nope. I was totally unaware. Don’t have any Orange guitars here in Texas…but we do have some of the amps.
Wow, I didn’t know Orange made guitars…cool.
