I didn’t care much for this thread initially, but I guess it sort of brings us all closer together. Anyway: 15
Idlewild- "Roseability"
Pete Yorn- "For Nancy (‘cos it already is)"
Radiohead- "Pyramid Song"
J. Mascis+ the Fog- "All the Girls"I also heard from a few people that there are good liner notes, but I don’t really ever trust what he says. I don’t have it, so are the liner notes good at all?
Salamiguy- I’m glad to hear that you’ve even HEARD of Rites of Spring. They are certainly not a very mentioned band and they’re just awesome. considering that they’re attributed with creating emotional punk altogether. Thanks for that.
I can remember first listening to "In A Jar" about a year ago in my room because I was intrigued by the band and the album seemed to be the logical pick after "Bug." All the tracks before the song were just incredible, but it was this one amidst the chaos of the previous songs that maintained the intensity but sort set itself apart from the rest of the songs in a tender way. J. was laying out naked here without being able to hide behind distortion. I identified with that vulnerability and it led me through a wonderful winter.

I’m right with you. The conviction is overwhelming in this song. Drives me blind with rage sometimes.

In A Jar- "Just wanna find out what you’re nice to me for" and "Alls I could do was lick your hand"
It just sums up all that youthful question of "Is this love, baby? Or is it just confusion?" -(great Hendrix line)In A Jar- "Just wanna find out what you’re nice to me for" and "Alls I could do was lick your hand"
It just sums up all that youthful question of "Is this love, baby? Or is it just confusion?" -(great Hendrix line)I’ll keep it to 5 because going into more will eventually end up in a list of "All the albums I’ve ever bought that I really liked.":
Husker Du- "Zen Arcade"
Dinosaur Jr.- "You’re Living All Over Me"
Rites of Spring- "End on End" (one cd collection of all 17 of their songs)
Meat Puppets- "Meat Puppets II"
At the Drive-In- "Vaya"I know it may seem a bit sappy, but Pete Yorn’s "musicforthemorningafter" is just gorgeous. It’s just a perfect melange of folk, country, rock and roll…and what a voice. Almost sounds like Dinosaur Jr….
There are just so many. To start, "Little Fury Things." First, the intro with that insistent wah-wah and J just shrieking…it was magical. Then when J and Lee Ronaldo came together, both of their voices faltering (that gets back to that raw/imperfect aesthetic). The tiny break that comes with the maracas (is that what they are?). And the final chill that just sent me into sheerly ecstatic melancholy: the final verse where that distortion just drones and tugs at the heart. What a song, what a band.

Azerrad retells some tragically funny stories about the band in their van, where each of the guys’ most annoying traits soaked through. One is the (in)famous cookie monster incident. The best, in my opinion, though, is when Murph (I’m pretty sure it was Murph) sleepwalks, ready to kill Lou until he wakes up, right when he’s about to reach him. It’s crazy. Band dynamics are always really interesting and complex at times; I think Dinosaur’s is certainly an intriguing one. But the guys definitely were in too close quarters for too long a time. In reference to the Velvet Underground, I was actually discussing Lou in my music class today because there was a good article on him in the Sunday NY Times. Reed and Cale definitely can’t stand eachother. It would be cool, though, to listen to them reunite and have a half-hour duke-out on "Sister Ray."

I’m right with you salamiguy. The opening of "Little Fury Things" just pulled me in. I was prepared to be blown away, but when the squeal of the wah-wah and (I assume) J. shrieking, my heart just swelled with blissful melancholy.
