that might not be j’s personal guitar, it’s possible he borrowed it off john for the tour. i seem to recall cobra verde using a flowered strat on a past tour at some point although i’m not 100% certain.
May 28, 2003 at 4:43 pm in reply to: Pictures from the May 24 J- Cobra Verde show in Brooklyn #93827hey anthony, that’s sad about no j
but hope to see you there anyway.i dunno what i’ll wear tomorrow but i have the usual long brown hair, glasses and i’ll probably wear my purple cow bandanna in honor of j even though he’s not showing up…
Here’s some information that a new member of the Cobra Verde mailing list sent in, regarding why J is missing some of the shows:
"Hello–
I saw the sunday show at the bug jar in rochester and it was super
duper. My ears just stpped ringing today. On the J issue, they said he had a fire in his house so he couldn’t make it. That sounds sort
of alarming now that it’s written out, but I didn’t get the idea that
he was hurt or anything, just that he had to deal with his house and
couldn’t be there."I’m assuming this is referring to unfinished cleanup from the fire at Bob’s Place a few months ago, certainly would make some sense that stuff needs to be taken care of, insurance companies dealt with and so on

Hey Flying Cloud, I wouldn’t be surprised if J just needed a rest after all the heavy touring he’s been doing lately – I thought it was pretty cool of him to help out CV coming right off an Australian tour. I know when I was in Australia I was so tired when I came back, it’s a long flight, and I was just vacationing, not playing shows and giving interviews.
as for who CV gets on guitar, they’ve played some shows this year with Dave Cintron and also with Mike from Gaza Strippers…but really there are so many good guitar players in Ohio and others out of state that John knows, that I’m sure they will find someone good to pitch in

anthony – thanks for that info – too bad about j not being on the bill
altho of course we will go anyway.i’ll prolly give the club a call early next week to see what’s up exactly. i hope the new york shows this weekend are going well…
talk about "digressing" – cobra verde has had absolutely nothing to do with bob pollard or guided by voices since 1998
plus, the only member of the current band who played with pollard (not counting j) is john petkovic, the other three were all in other bands. sloppy journalism gets ridiculous sometimes.hey anthony – me and a couple other ppl are meeting up at the iota club about an hour prior to the show. the iota club doesn’t do advance ticket presales at all, so we thought getting there early and maybe having a couple drinks would be the best plan as i’ve been advised the club is pretty small, and j might draw a decent crowd. hope to meet up with you there as well.
I’m down for the Virginia show

Hey, is there any word on whether J will be playing with Cobra Verde at the June 4 show in Chicago or the June 5 show in Cleveland? Both of these shows are Cobra Verde opening for the legendary Rocket from the Tombs.
(in case anyone doesn’t know this already, Rocket from the Tombs was the seminal band featuring the late punk legend Peter Laughner, Pere Ubu frontman David Thomas, and Dead Boy Cheetah Chrome along with Craig Bell. Thomas, Bell and Chrome have reunited with Richard Lloyd taking Laughner’s place and Ubu drummer Steve Mehlman sitting in, to do a string of reunion dates. )
This is an issue that comes up a lot among Guided by Voices fans as well. Bob Pollard has put out dozens of records, yet almost every article or interview is the same old tired stuff about how he used to be a school teacher many, MANY years ago and how he drinks a lot of beer onstage. i bet it’s that way for many acts. it makes the occasional "good" interview where someone is really a fan or has done their homework stand out in a big way. from my experience, most journalists, even those that specialize in rock, don’t care to devote a lot of effort to any one interview unless they happen to be a fan of whoever it is. so they listen to the CD for a couple of minutes, read the bio and ask the same ol’ stuff just so they can get done. a lot of them are too young to remember j in Dino so don’t have a good sense of his greatness, and yeah someone who pauses a lot in interviews can be disconcerting if you aren’t prepared for that. because you have to rush somewhere else shortly so you just assume everyone else is as hyper as you
as for asking about mike watt or cobra verde, sadly enuf those artists aren’t even on a lot of writers’ radar screens (i just read that watt was completely left out of some rolling stone piece on the stooges reunion!), they’re kind of cult favorites as is j himself.i would ask how j feels he’s evolved as a musician over the years, what he’s learned about music or life that he wishes he knew when he was young, and also what advice he would give to anyone starting out as a guitarist. what sort of equipment, etc. also how he feels about technique vs. effects because so many younger guitarists seem very dependent on effects to me…it would seem you have to have both but I’d love to hear j’s take on it.
Couple more dates have been announced on the Cobra Verde and Muscletone sites: May 24 at the Southpaw in Brooklyn, NY and May 30 at the Pilot Light in Knoxville, TN. No word on whether J is confirmed at those two shows as of yet.
cool story, if anyone could attract aliens with his guitar I think it would be J with all his effects

hey there monkeysnail, i like cobra verde (obviously) but i think flying cloud has the right advice, check out a couple of their mp3’s and then decide. i think cobra verde will be great with j because he is a great guitarist and will push the others to their musical limits so they don’t get shown up

expect nothing – i believe i read that j added guitar parts to two songs on the record, although most of the guitar on the record was done by derek deprator (no longer with the band, j is more or less replacing him live), frank vazzano and don depew, plus a little by john petkovic. there’s no song-by-song breakdown on the cd and it was recorded over two years so it’s hard to pinpoint *exactly* who played what, but i think most of j’s involvement came in the form of adding guest solos near the end of the process.
the two songs that j does solos on, according to my knowledge, are "riot industry" (this one is obvious, the solo at the end is trademark J!) and "throw it away".
however, at the live show j played on about ten songs, pretty much cobra verde’s usual set that they did last year on the j, watt and breeders tours, and including some stooges songs that cobra verde and j were jamming on the road last year. most of the new cobra verde songs were written and arranged for two guitarists so j is basically stepping in to fill that role

yep, J traded instruments with CV’s Mark Klein for one song, as well as rocking on guitar the rest of the time. my one complaint was that J was sorta in the back – I know he was probably being the sweet guy he is and letting the band have their night but he really needs to be up front next to bass playa Ed for the full-on rock effect. Nice to hear "TV Eye" which I think they did together on the road at some show I wasn’t at (Detroit)? Hopefully they can learn a few additional songs when they do more dates with J in the summer, and play a bit longer
more is always more better!!at least two ppl were taking pictures and I’m guessing those will surface on http://www.cobraverde.com”>http://www.cobraverde.com or http://www.potholemusic.net”>http://www.potholemusic.net if we’re lucky…
oh, and anyone who hasn’t bought the CV record, it’s great, get one – you might have to order it off their website because i haven’t been able to find it in stores yet in my home state though i got a couple at the show of course.
that ed sotelo sure writes some great promotional materials
hmm, the end of "riot industry" sounds pretty dern good
