hi folks, I wouldn’t get too excited about stories like this—it’s a lot of political posturing for the most part. whoever said RIAA is basically a lobbying organization is right on, they just run around trying to get attention for their cause but the Justice department is probably not all that interested in criminal prosecutions of song swappers. Justice has to pay some attention to the RIAA since they have money to spend on campaign funding and that, but it doesn’t really jump up and down every time RIAA says jump. a lot of people who work at Justice would probably agree with the folks on this board that the whole idea of criminal prosecution of song swappers is stupid, waste of time, bad policy, another will just spring up, etc.
without going into detail, due to the work I do and some of the jobs I have held in the past, I think Justice has other priorities such as keeping foreign terrorists from infiltrating our air traffic controls and our defense networks. going after Kazaa users or whatever in a criminal prosecution would be small potatoes and hard to make succeed, although some idiot local AUSA or FBI might eventually try I don’t think Justice would be the first ones to go after these folks. the statutes they would have to use are very hard to apply to individual users. (of course there is a concern that Congress would pass tougher statutes.) as for the Supreme Court this issue probably isn’t even close to getting there for a long time. at this point it’s a legislative and policy issue basically, and the RIAA would probably like to have Dept of Justice on its side, but this will only happen if a lot of other things first happen (like tougher statutes get passed, DOJ gets the resources to pursue criminal prosecution etc.) since all this takes time, RIAA publishing this story is just trying to get everyone’s attention in a lobbyist sort of way.
if anyone is interested in these sorts of issues, my friend runs a good group on live journal (you don’t have to be a member of LJ to read the group). it’s at http://www.livejournal.com/community/antiriaa and people post articles, links and intelligent discussion on a regular basis.
happy birfday everybody! and sarsaparilly, i am way older than you—trust me, it matters not! (except that i have a lot more sense now than when i was a kiddie!)

Hi Rosa,
Theoretically a lot of nuclear waste Can be recycled (i.e. chemically changed into useful compounds) but in the U.S. this is not being done on a large scale. One reason is that it costs more to recycle the waste than to dump it. Another big reason is that U.S. citizens would probably object to recycled nuclear waste being used, and might vote politicians out of office who supported such a scheme. So there is no economic incentive to do it in the U.S. I think some other countries are recycling the waste, generally these are countries that have less waste, less space to bury it and where the government operates a little differently so public opinion may not matter so much as it does in the U.S. If you Google on "nuclear waste"+recycling you’ll find a bunch of pages dedicated to this issue. here is one (scroll to the bottom)http://www.wiskit.com/marilyn/nucwaste.html
(I edited this to take out "in most products" because most of it would probably end up back in the govt devices that used it in the first place, but consumers would still worry about accidents working with it, quality control etc.)

yeah, i got told after the show that brokaw was formerly in come and that he jammed at some previous j show. i’ve heard of come but i never heard any of their music. however i just got done listening to the mp3 of brokaw solo on "bricks" that was on the sxsw site and based on that i think he’d sound better performing with a backing band or at least a drummer.
we were talking about that on another list and decided it must just be a joke or somebody’s way to get a lot of hits to their site, because most of those albums are really great. i mean the guy says that you shouldn’t get Derek and the Dominoes "Layla", you should get a greatest hits comp instead. that’s gotta be satire.
I did make it to the show, and it was a very lovely night. J started off singing about freedom, ’twas a very 70s kind of vibe…then moved on to "Ammaring"…"Get Me"…and whatever the beautiful song was he played right before "Repulsion", I should probably know what it was but I was pretty far into my Corona by that point—can someone help me out with the title?…by the time he got to "Wagon" I was definitely ready to leave right after that because I was becoming too emotional to be out in public <img> Did not run into anyone from the board, but maybe next time.
The opener (Chris Brokaw) I would give a B or B+, he was good but it’s hard for one guy playing solo guitar to open for J when you know you are going to see a master with a trademark style in a few minutes. Chris just seemed a bit watered down.
Hi Chris, I keep hearing on different lists about the Tech TV ad with Cobra Verde. I have not yet seen the ad myself (I don’t watch much TV) but it’s been running for a while. I believe that is the old lineup of the band in the advertisement and not the one that has been touring since last August. One of these days hopefully I will see the actual ad myself.

I am going to try to make it. If I do I will be the older lady with long brown hair and glasses probably in a short purple dress. say hello if you want, i have no idea what any of you look like.
hehe, I always wear asbestos underwear, Jaron!
There is a good chance I will be there, although I’m not 100% positive yet.
