I personally got bored with SY sometime after the Teenage Riot era, but a lot of other people were just discovering them and getting excited by them at the same point I was nodding off. Seems like bands go through different stages and fanbases ebb and flow as the fans get older or the band gets into something else. If I had my druthers no band would stay together longer than 5 years because I find them almost universally boring past that point. But many others would disagree with me.

to me the longevity of SY isn’t so much about their great musical talent – sure they have some but so do a lot of other people – as it is about their ability to survive as an entity, game the system, exploit their contacts, market themselves and still somehow be regarded as "alternative" even though to me they’ve been commercial since about the time of "The Year PUnk Broke". They’re getting to be like some punk version of Jefferson Airplane/Starship for my money. yawn

if you haven’t, also check out old releases by The Glove (Robert’s project with Steve Severin—I think there were other Banshees involved also). it’s really wild that the Cure are still around. they were my favorite band in the 80s and I saw them about three times around the era of Head on the Door. I would have seen them before that but they never played Cleveland where I was living in the early 80s, so we had to be content with the records. I lost interest about the time Robert cut his hair—they had started attracting a lot of very young fans (same as Depeche Mode) and seemed like their music became rather repetitive, and I agree that there was way too big of a deal made out of Roberts hair or lack thereof. but everything up through probably Fascination Street still turns me on. Especially "Primary".

aw geez! that’s too bad about the Sonic Youth show. I actually saw them back when they played crummy little dive bars rather than big shows…I remember seeing Kim changing in this crappy little broom closet behind the "stage" (ha what a joke) because the door wouldn’t shut all the way…this was a ta club called the COMPLEX in Wash DC that closed down very shortly thereafter. anyway I hope you get to hang out backstage at the next show. I am bummed out today myself over a death in the extended family and I was hoping to hang out with a friend who is in town, but his schedule turned out to be booked up…so I am with you in your depression! Hope we both have some better times in the future.

i totally love how j is a man of few words. it makes me wish a few other musicians who run their mouths to what i consider an excessive degree would learn a lesson from him.

unfortunately i’m not listening to anything right now ’cause i’m at work and i can’t play music here, but just wanted to congratulate Mr. Horrowitz on his good taste in playing so much Rudy Trouve. I hope before I die I find the complete version of Dead Man Ray live @ Studio Amstel again, I lost my mp3s of it and I have not been able to find a complete live version of "Chemical" from that session since, dammit.

yayy! a death of samantha appreciator!! i loved that band. homestead sure had a great roster in those days (great plains, etc.).

as for the strokes thing, people have occasionally compared julian casablancas and john petkovic as far as looks and attitude go but considering how long john’s had cobra verde as well as the relative quality of musicianship, i don’t think the comparison goes very far. plus the strokes really want to be guided by voices, which is a totally different head man. totally.

and by the way, the music industry is attempting to bury mass file sharing (i.e. napster, audiogalaxy) and cd rippers as fast as it possibly can…actually the industry is trying to just overcome these things technologically because the courts move slower than technology does, so some kind of anti-copying device is the best solution—sure some people will hack it but most won’t bother. private file sharing will probably be around for a long time, ’cause it’s too costly to go out and bust every private file share, but if the music industry had the resources they’d get rid of every private file share too.

Well, given that the purpose of VCR and Ripper is to capture streams (i.e. take stuff that you’re not supposed to have) and turn them into MP3s and other sharable formats, I’m sure there are a number of copyright arguments that can be made, and some from other fields of law as well (like potential criminal violation for stealing a stream). There are usually a lot of arguments on both sides of the issue when it comes to Internet and software stuff because it’s a new technology, etc. However, companies often give up or settle fairly fast when they don’t have the resources to tie up in paying for a lawsuit and/or don’t want to screw up potential good business relationships by getting into a fight with a larger and better-connected software firm.

Streambox Ripper (and possibly Streambox VCR capture program as well) were originally offered by Streambox as legitimate software products. It appears they got threatened by a lawsuit – I’m guessing some type of copyright infringement bugaboo – and had to take them off the US market and disable the "legit" DL sites and put up all those "Illegal" warnings. you can still find DL sites for Streambox programs though, you just have to search a little bit.

Hey there djm, You can burn MP3s off to an audio CD for listening—just make sure your CD burner is setup to create an audio disc rather than a data disc. I don’t get what you mean about "a CD player that plays MP3s", because if you’re burning the stuff off onto a disc then you basically have made a CD. You’re not dealing with MP3s anymore. When you talk about playing an MP3 it usually means you’re playing the file itself, like with Winamp or Realplayer or whatever, and not playing something burned off on a CD. So after I have burned my MP3s onto a CD I can stick them in any ol’ audio CD player and they will play fine. I hope this helps.
