Well, I’ll be getting the 2 Illinois Festivals and the Madison show all recorded for your listening pleasure (barring Murphy’s Law intervening)!
I’m still working on finding a ticket to the show in Chicago at Subterranean. I would tape that show as well if I could find a damn ticket. I didn’t find out about that one until I got back from the Alaskan Fog adventure (as it has become known in my memoirs) and it was already sold out! I come back with J Mascis and The Fog recordings that I basically captured in Russia to find that a show 2 hours due south of me is sold out. Ha!
Can you drum me up a ticket, Jeremiah? 🙂
April 19, 2012 at 12:48 am in reply to: Alvaro, tapeworms and J’s broken legs..all in one day #138852I thought that it was because they liked a lot of older bands and sounds, hence “dinosaur” music. The “Jr” was added when a bunch of hippies sued them over the name. Earlier in the 80’s a collective of Woodstock-era bands christened themselves Dinosaur. So, after You’re Living All Over Me the “Jr” was attached.
I just tried them and they sound good from freesofree. Use winamp player with the FLAC plug-in. I found that works the best with FLAC files.
The second night is available over at freesofree.net!

It has Severed Lips, a 9-minute Ammaring, and J covering Cortez the Killer!
That first shot has got to be a shot from a performance of The Lung. That’s the only song where I’ve really noticed he grabs the mic.
I haven’t skied in nearly 20 years and was kind of nervous about killing myself on them. So, I didn’t. Plus, it’s costly renting all the gear and getting tickets (I had already spent $600 for a plane ticket and nearly $200 for lodging). The extra clothing would have meant another airport bag as well.
I did do some hiking, but ran out of camera battery. I bought and returned a charger the second night so that I could take pics at the show. I got some cool mountain pictures though. I also just barely avoided a collision with a 7 foot tall moose at 65 mph on the pitch black highway. I mean I missed that moose by about 1.5 feet. That was pretty fucking crazy.
It turns out someone knocked over my rig that was in the soundboard area and I will have to patch Ammaring somehow. I left my stuff for 5 minutes at a time probably 5 times during each show as it was semi-protected amongst the front of house equipment and nylon fencing. I didn’t find out until the show ended that as it was knocked, J’s sound engineer Tim ran around the board console and caught it before it hit the floor. That’s like a narrow 6 foot run involving a sharp turn. If I had known before he disappeared I would have thanked him profusely. He even re-positioned it perfectly. Two lessons learned: 1. always tape down your rig no matter how seemingly safe or protected it is and 2. if you don’t babysit your rig shit will eventually happen.
Anna-
I last saw Dino in Miami in January. I actually was looking forward to hearing The Fog do Alone. That is one of my favorite songs.
The mountains and terrain were simply majestic. I mean, absolutely awe inspiring. And it is far. I drove two hours from Milwaukee to Chicago and then flew to Anchorage through Seattle.
I’m on the return home now boarding a plane in Seattle bound for Chicago. I am halfway through my 14 hour trip back home.
Eric played guitar well but he’s not really my cup of tea.
Kevin Sweeney, the new bassist was fucking solid. I really enjoyed him on Just Like Heaven. I went up and was right in front of him for that one. That’s a bass-driven song and he was awesome. He nailed it. And the band had ZERO rehearsals leading up to these shows. Kevin never played with the fog before. Plus, he’s a super nice guy and got me backstage to meet J!
Yeah, it will be a few days though. I have to give them the car speaker test before I finish them. Then I’ll upload them to Dime. Freesofree’s operator will then grab it and put it up there. He always has my blessing do what he wants with my recordings. That is my favorite archive site.
They were local hippies. They were dancing like Deadheads! The one bumped into J during Cortez’s intro jam and he looked at her and just nodded. Tim, J’s sound engineer, was dying of laughter, as was I.
I know my friend. I must master these recordings now. I cut off the extreme low end when I record and coax it back out during mastering. It’s very tedious work, but well worth it.
I recorded both shows and they sound awesome!!!!
Yeah, I’m going! I’m pretty excited.
I’ll be taping the shows as well.
Thanks again for the sampler!
The Ammaring and Maggot Brain tracks have been played continuously since I received the disc.
