My friend got the tracks to the new album and sent them to me. It is indeed called "Beyond" and so far, after listening to the album as a whole, I can’t find a reason to like it. For those who had hoped that they’d have a more aggressive, powerful sound due to the old lineup, I am sorry to inform you but it just isn’t happening on this album. The main feel I got from the album was "Without a Sound" but with a greater classic rock influence. There’s some guitar solos, but most are just very standard and don’t do enough to keep the listener’s attention. My main problem with the album so far is that it’s got that post-Green Mind underlying sadness that plagued the later albums. I’ve only given it one listen so it could potentially grow on me…I think my expectations were a little too high :-.

Although I like a few songs here and there, I’m not a huge fan of the first album. Whenever I try to give it a chance, I always find myself kind of getting bored and wishing that I was listening to YLAOM or Green Mind. To me, it’s just a little quiet, slow and somewhat stale but when I saw them play live last year, it was completely different. "Gargoyle" in particular sounds much better live because J’s guitar part is actually in-your-face, like he’s known for. But yeah, I agree, they sound much much better live.
