Bearcat, It was great having a nice discussion about it. Too often on music boards differing opinions lead to fighting. Have a good weekend.
Bearcat, Even though we have differing opinions of the album, I do understand a lot of points you are making. I totally agree with your comment about different producer. I don’t know the technical terms for it, but do think the tracks would be better if it were mixed in a more dynamic way.
The only album I ever really felt was going through motions was Without a Sound(I do think Over Your Shoulder was an awesome song, but that is about it on that album for me). I actually know quite a few people that prefer that album to Dinos other work oddly enough.
As far as sounding Dj lite, the band are nearing 50, and I just think that is what the sound has evolved into. It would be ridiculous for the band to constantly try to recreate YLAOM every album. I’ve always thought that it has to be hard for aggressive bands to stay aggressive when either age, or money , or both have changed the reasons they were playing such loud, aggressive stuff in the first place. At least lyrics wise.
To me, an album comes down to songs. I really like Don’t Pretend, Rude, Recognition, Pierce the Morning Rain, and Watch the Corners. The nly track I dont like is I Know it Oh So Well. I feel like Pierce the Morning Rain, Rude, and Recognition are very unique and creative Dino songs as well. Like the band was going for something different, be it tempo, rhythmn, or J holding back on a solo.
I Bet on Sky a clunker? Just because there are a few similarities song wise, doesn’t mean the album was uninspired. Some Hendrix and Mile davis songs sound similar to other songs in their catalogs, but nobody ever accused them of just going through motions.
Dinosaur jr have put out music for almost 30 years. I would think it would almost be impossible to not hear a few similarities.I don’t think any of the songs “rip off” any of the older songs, they merely have a part that sound similar. As far as a pop move, I don’t see that either. To me, its obvious the band does whatever they please, and don’t worry at all about how the album is percieved. YLAOM is my favorite album ever, but I’m glad they aren’t trying to recreate that 25 years later. That was a different time and place. Songs Like Pierce the Morning Rain, and both of Lou’s tracks sound fresh and totally different from any other dino tracks to me. Like the band was pushing it….doing something different, but not just with volume. I think the songs from I Bet on Sly will be incredible live.

September 9, 2012 at 7:11 pm in reply to: Reporting of IP addresses for anyone illegally DL new album #139376Well said terryfunku. I did dl the album because I couldn’t wait. Im doing the preorder. I have at least 2 copies of every dinosaur jr album. I see Dino multiple times in every tour, and always buy all the mercy I don’t have. My healthy, 25 year old neighbor passed away this week. Not that it would matter, but I’d never forgive myself if I perished before the dinosaur album was released and I never tried to hear the album.
I did hear set us free, turnip farm, and gas food lodging too.
To think these guys are almost 50 putting out an album this solid amazes me. I think the songs will be even better live. Stick a toe in would awesome if it were a bit heavier. I think they will do that live. Rock it out a bit. More dynamic. I do think j will stretch the solos out a bit as well which will only make the songs even better
I love the album. The only track I don’t like is I know it oh so we’ll. Don’t pretend, pierce the morning rain, and both of lous tracks are my favorites.

2. Where you been- sounds so much different then any other recording I had/have ever heard.it has such a sad atmosphere to it. Drawerings is in my second favorite Dino tune.
3. Farm- this album still gets tons of play
4. Beyond- was blown away that the reunion went so well
5. Dinosaur-I’ve always thought it was such an underrated album. Forget the swan, bulbs of passion, quest, severed lips, and repulsion are some of my favorite Dino songs.
6 green mind-Feel bad ranking it so low, I love this album
7.bug- love love love no bones, wish the album had more tracks, especially since don’t is almost like an instrumental
8. Hand it over-probably don’t play this as much as I should
9. Without a sound- over yer shoulder is so great, but the album seems like it was rushed to meAfter 10 years of marriage, unfortunately don’t has become my wifes theme song.i preferred they always come.
As far as new tracks….that stick a toe in it has potential….not my thing, but some people are into that sort of thing
September can’t get here fast enough
Lol
I’m not sure how it went this far without blowing it being mentioned.
If she says start choppin, I’d run.
Bill Hicks is awesome. My favorite comedian of all time.

I thought the Bends was the best album of the 90’s. OK Computer was awesome too. I havent liked anything since. They were great live, but I was lucky enough to catch them in tiny venues touring for the Bends and OK Computer.
