Like I said, it wasnt a huge deal. I was just excited that I saw a mention of J and his work.
Stanner,
I always thought it was a little strange that my three favorite guitar (J, Jimi, And Jim) players all have a name that begins with the letter J. John Frusciante is my number 4, so I must have some strange obsession with the letter J.
Good te see another Mermen fan on the boards.
Take care,
Tomp.s.
Frank Zappa and Michael Hedges are two more incredible guitar player. When I first started taking guitar lessons about 10 years ago, I brought some Dino/J songs in to my guitar teacher. My guitar teachers favorite player was Randy Rhoads, and he was really more into your technical guitar players. My teacher could hear songs by your Malmsteens, Van Halens, Eric Johnsons, Rhoads, and Nuno bettencourts, and play them or tab it right away.
When he would tab out my Dinosaur stuff for me, it would give him someproblems. He had trouble figuring out the song structure and where the song was going. It was never J’s playing that gave him any trouble. It was really the early stuff that would this was an issue with, as the Dinosaur jr and Fog albums have become a little more structured. Even though J’s playing has gotten better technically, the songs seem to be a little less unpredictable.J is my favorite. Always is, always will be. He is so damn melodic.
I do think Hendrix is the best though. The stuff he was doing in the 60’s had to seem out of this world at the time. Machine Gun is such a wickedly cool guitar song.
An underrated guitar player that blows my mind is Jim Thomas of The Mermen. The surf genre has some great guitar plyers, but Jim Thomas is out of this world. He strings his guitar with bass strings and…I cant even adequetly describe how insanely good the guy is on guitar. He has to be heard.
Mike Randle, who plays for Arthur Lee right now is great too.
I really like John frusciantes playing a lot.
Love the Built to Spill guitar sound as well, but I never really know who is playing what, and where the credit should go.
Leslie West from Mountain was solid.Tom

Rambleon,
Detroit hasn’t lived up to the Rock City label lately. The Stooges reunion show was like the good old days though. I was completely blown away by the turnout and enthusiasm of the fans at that show.

8. BugI to think the first album has held up great. Forget the Swan is one of my all time Dino favs. I like the way Lou and J trade the vocals on it.
I think the songwriting (lyrics) on the first two albums have a whole different vibe then all the others.Everyone is bringing up some great points about the show getting cancelled.
I prefer the smaller venues myself, and find it frustrating buying tickets to large venues. The ticket brokers grab up all the good seats to the large venues. I’ll spend the money if I can get a good seat at a large venue, but theres no way I’m gonna drop money to watch a show on the tv screen.
As far as the pop concerts selling tickets, I think it has more to do with parents taking their 3rd grader to a Hilary Duff/Brittney Spears gig then anything else. I teach, and the little kids are into the pop stuff, but the jr high/high school students seem to be more into classic rock then anything else. Rap is also extremely popular with the 15-19 crowd in the metro Detroit area.
I’ve also noticed that in the last four or five years, the shows in Detroit aren’t like they used to be. I would always see Dinosaur Jr /J in Michigan(where I live), Ohio, and Chicago when he/they would tour. The Detroit crowd used to blow away the other crowds as far as making noise/getting into the show. Detroit isn’t like that anymore. Detroit shows used to rock, and now they are actually kind of embarrassing. Has anyone else seen this trend in the area they live?
(Cleveland on the other hand, seems to have gotten alot better to see a show in the last few years)Tom

Bucky,
Thanks for letting me know what was going on.

Those album covers are hilarious! I couldn’t stop laughing. I feel bad saying it, but a girl in my class from 3 years ago looks exactly like the guy in the bottom of the Gert Jonny’s picture!
I agree with Rich. They need some shirts for the "big and tall" J fan. No XL’s.
As far as the price on the tee’s, I dont think they’re that bad. If I get a shirt for $20 at a concert, I think its a good price. I also like the fact that there are some shirts that are cheap. If they only fit………
