Fear, Emptiness, Decibel: Is Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis the Grandfather of Grindcore?

Deep Wound

Deep Wound

“In an excerpt from Albert Mudrian’s Choosing Death, Mascis discusses the formation of Deep Wound, his proto-grind band.”

“We just wanted to play as fast as possible and, I think, sometimes it was to the detriment of our songs,” says Mascis. “All we were concerned with, really, was playing faster and faster.”

J Mascis / Dinosaur Jr The J Files episode from 2001 – Triple J Radio Australia

Streams

Triple J Radio in Australia has a radio special they put on called “The J Files” (recently relaunched on Double J) and on Feb 15, 2001, J Mascis was the focus of the 3-hour show. This was just before he was to go to Australia in support of “More Light“.  The show consists of lots of fan requests, a phone interview with J scattered throughout along with interviews with James Straker,  Kim Gordon, Carolyn Polley (Big Heavy Stuff), and other fans.  If you’ve got 3 hours to kill and want a pretty good Dinosaur Jr / J Mascis mixtape to listen to scattered with interviews and such look no further.

New Dinosaur Jr on the way and video from Taste of Randolph Festival

Live Video, News

Dinosaur Jr played the Taste of Randolph in Chicago this weekend and Otis Bperiod was kind enough to give us more behind the scenes shots along the way. Among those shots was a mention of J playing a NEW Dino tune! This is very promising 🙂

* This one is not from Chicago but another rad shot as per usual from O.

Some kind souls have also shared some video from the show which I you can watch here.

Dinosaur Jr on the David Letterman Set

Dinosaur Jr appearances on David Letterman

Live Video

Since David Letterman is saying goodbye to late night TV I thought what better time than look back at the four times that Dinosaur performed there.

Their first appearance was in 1992 performing “The Wagon” while promoting the release of “Green Mind“. They were joined by the Paul Schaefer band as they did from time to time.

Their second appearance was in 1993 to play “Out There” from “Where You Been“. Again joined by Paul Schaefer and his band along with David Sanborn on sax.

Their third visit was in 1994 in support of “Without A Sound“. They played “Feel the Pain” and this time it was just Dino bringing the noise.

In 2007 the reunited original lineup came back to play “Almost Ready” from “Beyond“.

Thanks to David Letterman for all the great years of laughs and musical guests!!

If this got you in the mood for more we have a pretty good archive of other TV performances Dinosaur have made through the years.
