SWEET APPLE, the band of rockers featuring J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr., Heavy Blanket), Tim Parnin (Cobra Verde, Chuck Mosley), John Petkovic (Cobra Verde, Death of Samantha, Guided By Voices) and Dave Sweetapple (Witch, Eerie), will release their new album, Sing the Night in Sorrow, on July 28 via Tee Pee Records. SWEET APPLE collaborated across several state lines to create the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2014 release, The Golden Age of Glitter, hailed as “throwback power pop that should soothe the soul of just about any riff-loving rock fan” by Esquire and one of the “Best Albums of 2014” by ABC News.

Given the band’s geographical reach — its four members live in Massachusetts, Vermont and Ohio — it’s no surprise that SWEET APPLE’s inner circle has expanded outwards for this release. The four-piece have confirmed that guest musicians who have contributed to Sing the Night in Sorrow include Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age),Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices), Rachel Haden (Haden Triplets) and Doug Gillard(Guided by Voices, Nada Surf). Meanwhile, Stephen McBean (Black Mountain, Pink Mountaintops) will join the band on second guitar.

Sing the Night in Sorrow explores themes such as longing and escape, darkness consumed by endless daylight, love amid lovelessness, faulty memory, alienation and distance. The LP is set to a musical palette that is wide-ranging, mixing atmosphere with impact. Sing The Night In Sorrow rolls out insurgent guitars, glitter-stomp, and orchestrated pop, at once timeless and contemporary.

“Sweet Apple is different from most bands in that we’ve all met on the road, in different places, far from home,” says Petkovic. “Cleveland is a world away from Vermont or Massachusetts, where Dave and J reside.  It can be tough to keep it going when you’re spread out, but the distance and differences it brings informs the music in a way that makes it unique and gives the band a reunion-like quality whenever we get together. People always ask us, ‘What the hell are you doing in a band together?’”

With more details – and new music – due to be unveiled in the coming weeks, SWEET APPLE are gearing up to leave their mark on 2017. Follow the band on Facebook,Instagram and twitter.

Sweet Apple - Let's Take The Same Plane

New video for Sweet Apple’s “Let’s Take The Same Plane”

News

Dangerous Minds premiered the new video for Sweet Apple’s “Let’s Take The Same Plane“.

Directed by John Petkovic, “Let’s Take The Same Plane” finds us out in a kayak in lovely San Pedro along with Mike Watt who was also featured in the video “Wish You Could Stay (A Little Longer)“.  It is easy to see why Watt spends so much time out there on the water! Watt released a book of his photography titled On and Off Bass a couple years back and a lot of it was from these types of treks.
This is the third video from the fantastic album The Golden Age of Glitter and features Rachel Haden and Mark Lanegan on vocals.

Dinosaur Jr related releases for Record Store Day, April 19, 2014

News

There will be a few very cool Dino related releases for Record Store Day (April 19) this year.

First up, Numero Group will release the limited edition Visitors box set, five 7″ records that collect Dinosaur Jr.’s first four singles on SST and Homestead, plus a bonus 7″ featuring the band’s covers of the Byrds’ “I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better” and Peter Frampton’s “Show Me the Way.”

The box comes with artwork from frequent Dinosaur Jr. collaborator Maura Jasper, an essay from Jasper on her creative process and relationship with J Mascis, and a book of unused work from between 1985 and 1990.

Next up, as part of Warner Brothers’ Side By Side series, Dinosaur Jr.’s cover of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” will be pressed to vinyl for Record Store Day 2014. The 7″ single will be on white vinyl and includes the Dinosaur Jr. cover and The Cure’s original.  Many people think Dino’s brilliant take on the track is even better than the original (also great) and Robert Smith himself even said he loved it as well in this Melody Maker interview from 1989.

And finally, as part of Record Store Day in Australia, Tym Guitars will be releases a limited edition colored 7″ vinyl from Sweet Apple with an exclusive Australian cover of The Scientists’ “Frantic Romantic” on the b-side. These will ONLY be available from Tym guitars worldwide on RSD2014 but will be available online and through Tee Pee afterwards depending on availability.

Here is how John described the video:

"Still from upcoming Sweet Apple video for 'Wish You Could Stay (a Little Longer)" -- opens with J working at a record store in Cleveland and features everyone in different locations... from NYC to LA and in between."

“Still from Sweet Apple video for ‘Wish You Could Stay (a Little Longer)” .”

“It was shot from one coast to another, with the Midwest in between — connected with paper planes and cinema stunts. Dave in Chinatown; NYC. J working as a bored record-store clerk; Tim wander the beach in Cali; John at a hot-dog diner. Oh, a couple cameo by two good friends…”

This song is extremely catchy and it has gotten a lot of rotation since I got the single. It features guest vocals from Mark Lanegan.

The Golden Age Of Glitter‘ (TeePee Records) comes out April 8th and is available for pre-order now through iTunes & Amazon.

The “I Wish You Could Stay (A Little Longer)” single is available as a 7″ on Outer Battery Records or digitally on iTunes & Amazon.

Sweet Apple also covered Alice Cooper’s “Elected” & Anti Pasti’s “No Government” for a Outer Battery 7″ or you can get it digitally iTunes and Amazon.
