I have learrned, here , that one need not go to too many extremes in the extension of friendship, lest misinterpretation and disinterest arise.

Very well, madam. I have let the Freud references pass before in good faith. Now you have forced me to break out the Dalai Lama of Misogyny: Yes, Mr. John Milton!!!!!!!

"Would thou hadst heark’n’d to my words, and stay’d
with me, as I besought thee, when that strange
Desire of wand’ring this unhappy Morn,
I know not whence possess’d thee: we had then
Remain’s still happy, not as now, despoil’d
Of all our good, sham’s naked, miserable.
Let none henceforth seek needless cause to give proof of Their Faith’s obligation to possess;
when they earnestly seek such proof, conclude, they then begin to fail."

Paradise Lost, Book 9 lines
1134-1142
This scene depicts Eve’s response to being blamed be Adam for dooming mankind. The essence of the passge follows:

"Being as I am, why didst not thou as the Head
command me absolutely not to go
Going into such danger as thou said’st?
Too permissive then thou didst not much gainsay,
Nay, didst permit, approve, and fair dismiss.
Hadst thou been firm and fixt in thy dissent,
Neither had I transgress’s nor thou with mee.

Book 9 lines 1155-1162

In other words, Allison, go ahead amd lop off my list at Marley. However I still want votes of some sort on the rest. "Hie! get thee to thy matter at hand!!!"

hehehe

Standing Hampton!!!!!!!!!!!
(ok maybe Sammy Hagar wasn’t needed here….)

Dan Hampton Makes the Hall of Fame!!!!

What’s more amazing is that he got busted for drunk-driving a few days ago in Arkansas.

Guys who got screwed this year:
James Lofton and Art Monk
Guys who also qualify for the Hall of Shame:
Bill Parcells and Art Modell

I wouldn’t say that about Parcells but I still think he is the main guy responsibile for the Tampa Bay mess and then didn’t have the guts to claim his end of it. Modell belongs for screwing Cleveland a few years back. I don’t think they will ever forgive him for that.

Whoops… forgot there was going to be a rating system in place. Please feel free to give all of my entries either ten points apiece or one point apiece to solve the problem. I am not putting one over the other only for the simple fact that I cannot and hesitate to say which has had a bigger influence on me. I hope this doesn’t sound like a smart-ass solution, but I think Allison knows me well enough to understand where I am coming from. Sorry to those of you who are confused or put off.

Deviant to the end,
Tom

Well, I can’t speak for what influences FreakScene since I am not "it" (contrary to popular self -belief ), but here goes my most influential in this lifetime (disinterest in the exact order of these artists is computed and compounded momently.

2. Dead
3. Doors

welcome back, palee! The teeth deal can suck, indeed. I get side effects, usually on the nervous system, from too many painkillers. As far as the shutdown, that had to stink too. Good to see you back on and posting. I’ll lean on you instead of cutting you down, how’s that

Stuff I picked up since my last post to this thread:

1. Juliana Hatfield– Juliana’s Pony: Total System Failure. Critics, the type that were in den buck’s article, mentioned this is a lousy effort and that the other disc, Beautiful Creatures, which is mellower from what I hear, is a better work. All I know is that Jules has come a long way with her guitar playing and the lyrics on this release are snarly almost all the way through. That, and I like it, is all I will say.

2. Royal Trux– Cats and Dogs. An old favorite of mine that I am glad to have back in the ol’ collection.

3. and 4. Sleater-Kinney– Dig Me Out and All Hands on The Bad One. You know, I don’t quite know what to think about Dig Me Out as of yet, since I am too busy enjoying AHOTBO. Comparing the two, you can see how the musicianship has been continually improving. Their lyrics are incredible as well. Perhaps they do not have a lot of new ways to project vocally, but other aspects of their artistry are innovative and have bands copying them. No better respect than that, I think.

5. and 6. Naked Raygun — Jettison and Throb Throb. Hmm, what is about this band besides the fact their name has been on the main forum page for a few weeks that makes them interesting? I don’t know, go ask the critics . Seriously, they were a unit from Chicago that played for almost the entire decade of the eighties, ending in 1990, taking from various bands like Wire, Stiff LIttle Fingers and the Buzzcocks and funneling the influences into both their demographics and the political landscape of the time. What came out of them was high-energy, harmonic punk rock with a heart and a mind. It is likely that if Naked Raygun had not been the standard bearers, along with the Effigies, for punk in the Chicagoland area, we might not have seen the break in 1991. Maybe it could have happened, but this band showed what it took to from town to town to town for peanuts just to do what they liked and to give their fatihful well over their money’s worth. Don’t take my word for it, check them out and try not to overgeneralize about labels. Break it down a piece at a time and gold will be found.

7. Modest Mouse– Lonesome Crowded West. Still getting an over-all feel for this album. The gems are obvious, like Heart Cooks Brain, Truckers, and "Drunk". The thing with Modest Mouse that grabs me probably like no other band is their lyrical
style. I think they compress a lot of ideas into a few words and I will admit, the subtleties are sometimes lost on me. At times I think I understand something and then I have to reread or relisten to catch it again. I think lyrically, this album is more challenging than Moon and Antarctica and not as straightforward in the message end of things. I wonder if they write like J and do the music and then just find words that fit together. Obvious a lot of time goes into the lyrical end of things or perhaps I am just on a different cognitive level than Isaac Brock. Who knows.

8. Free Touch and Go/Quarterstick Records Sampler 2001. This came with the NR cd’s from Touch and Go along with a bunch of stickers for different bands. T and G still rock.
1. Elk City "Three Ears"
2. Empire State "Explode"
3. The Frames "Lay Me Down"
4. The Kingsbury Manx "Let You Down"
5. The Lofty Pillars "Underworld"
6. Tara Jane ONeil "Your Rats Are"
7. Superchunk "Art Class"
8. Quasi "It’s Raining"
9. Shannon Wright "Less Than a Moment
10. Quasi "Mammon"
11. Calexico "Crystal Frontier"
12. The Ex "Walt’s Dizzyland"
13. The New Year "Gasoline"
14. Bedhead "Lepidoptera"
15. Shipping News "The March Song"

Howdee do there Rosa!

Two points I’d like to comment on (I don’t use the quotes, so please correct me if I have responded around or past something you were trying to convey, please. Thanks.) :

1. You hit the nail on the head in what I generalized about, as far as "the mainline". The Philips folks are going to play a crucial role if they are able to stave of the two industry disorganizations from punishing all consumers further for violations commited by some.

I could get heavy-duty with the Constitution on this, but as an interpreted document, I stand only to offer my views on what I think is right, beginning a point/counterpoint debate. If they use the new Anti-Terrorism bill as any indication of how the current political climate may influence matters, we might have a shot, the Philips/consumer side that is.

However, I do not like the chances in the Supreme Court, until Rehnquist retires at least. Word is O’ Connor might be the new Chief. If so, I think we stand a chance with the Black Robes.

which brings me to point #

2. Please allow me to light upon the indispensable role of the lobbyist. This political creature is, for many members of Congress, the primary source of information for bills with specialized concerns outside of things like defense spending, education, taxes etc.. (no disrespect to lobbyists for those concerns, but again, lobbyists were be on a more equal plain with the politicians themselves due to the familiarity factor with these issues)

A main concern with Congressmen and Presidential candidates is taking the necessary steps to remain in office for as along as possibile. For Presidents, they can run an agenda and satisfy the most pressing concernss on the lips of the commoner, or at least those commoners he deems fit to acknowledge with the pen or the pocket. Congressional office holders, however, do not have term limits. Therefore, they need to constantly change gears in order to suit not just the individual or collective constituency, but the donors and patrons they hope to keep on hand.

One big way
many legislators keep their power base is the old backscratching technique known as logrolling. Many votes go down by members who do not have the faintest idea what they are voting for, yet due to the fact they want their bills to pass through down the road, the blind vote has to be cast. This is where lobbyists come in. They bang the doors, ring the phones, bring their presentations, offer funding for home projects through affiliates etc (pork barelling etc….) I think I covered things ok on the process.

Far as this situation on its dynamic, who can say. I do think appeasements is very possibile. Either way, the fact Philips is willing to sacrifice capital to maintain capital says a lot of the future type of sacr
ifices needed to keep the momentum and move on the cost repricing and further licensing of the Mp3 providers with the blessing of the industry. Greed must be destroyed first, if possibile through vanguard cases such as this and perhaps a class action suit if this current round of oppostion fails.

Nighty-nite don’t let the fascists bite. Kick their teeth out (with approval of course )

Matt,
Sorry it took so long to reply. You know how it is….

I say good to go for Philips. A battle of this proportions is just what is needed to even what seems to be the overwhelming advantage the industry groups has over the consumer. My only concern is that compromise may start and end with the two opposing sides appeasing one another. Obviously, the implications are that the consumer will benefit from not having to buy encoded and locked merchandise. I think the fight though is making the industry tone down the extent of their power abuses. It would be nice if the Philips thing could make a benchmark and then the mainline could be tapped, so to speak. I would be interested to hear what you think about this Matt or anyone for that matter.

Don’t know about you guys, but I would have to say this season has been the most fun for me for a long time. Bears or not. Save for the Rams, it seemed like the playoff contenders’ various strengths and weaknesses have made things interesting down the stretch. Something else, I am gald to be here to exchange thoughts. You find out people have different ways of expressing their enthusiasm for what they like and vice versa. Sometimes we don’t like what we hear or how it is put across, but hey, just like the music we all seems to share an interest in, we have different ways of communicating. Thanks to the powers that be for letting it be, here of all places. Don’t know about other boards since I don’t have a lot of time to surf them but this one’s freedom has to be one of its strongest points of attraction.
