Thanks Tom, my daughter really liked that song…we all enjoyed it.
Subtlety…that’s the key…I pulled out Free so Free a few weeks ago to listen to….great songs, each one of them and there are some heavy cymbals in some of those songs (set us free)….but they are mixed in so nice and soft….doesn’t hurt. Then I thought to myself….I’ve got a recording of the Schools/Spence Fog recording from the 40 Watt…so I thought, I’m going to listen to this again and see how Kyle deals with some of that heavy cymbal stuff…and I was surprised by how much it was okay to my ears but I think it’s because …. no,lets see, how can I describe it….I think Kyle doesn’t hit them as hard or either they are not miked the same ……because they blend in well with the rest of the drum sounds. Also..hey, a high-hat aint nothin’ but a little (or big in some cases) cymbal in the first place, when you understand how to use it.
I don’t know….but this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCrZgqdZ4Jw&feature=PlayList&p=37119CA3F768B2A9&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=3 kCrZgqdZ … PL&index=3 is what I want from drums…the cymbal is not being ignored…but it’s not being used as some crutch to "ride" on because interesting little fills that require understanding and subtlety are beyond (he,he) your grasp…Kyle Spence can play the drums, he’s not playing the cymbals, you know what I mean….Geez, I don’t have the words or understanding of it exactly but….man, if you break up a song into 4’s, ….no, no wait, I’m grasping for the words but I can’t describe exactly what I’m trying to say…but since I was on the Led Zeppelin IV for penance earlier…listen to a song like Misty Mountain Hop (Okay, I know, never my favorite song either until I started listening to the drums) in my best black girl voice I’m constantly saying, when listening to the drums on that song "Oh, no he di-ent" …that’s the best I can do. I love the studio recording of Misty Mountain Hop…cause that’s the same damn recording of the same damn cymbal hit…coming in on the 1 and sometimes the 16 each time….but….damn, it sounds so good. I tell my kids…that’s back before they had computers man, that stuff was being thrown down from 1 inch tape and 1/2 inch tape and 1/4 inch tape and glued together with scotch tape (he,he)
(came back here Sunday morning cause my friend Dan read my post and said WTF are you talking about…that was 2 inch tape…2 inch tape, who knew, I’ve never seen any sort of recording tape that was two inches wide, how could you even get something that big to run on reels at the correct speed, I was just guessing, I really don’t know exactly how recording was done for music in the ’70’s,..only vaguely (I bet most of the guys here do, cause that’s like something that people who are into music would know) I only know film soundtrack recording, and I was just guessing that it was sort of done the same way, that four 1/4 inch tape tracks would make up an inch, and then he tried to explain 24 track recording to me…. but I had so much going on that I couldn’t focus on what he was saying, he suggested that I take some time out of my life and read about The Beatles and how they were recorded……Dan told me I would be interested in it..how progressive it was… Okay,I’ll try and fit that into my life.)
I just want to say I’m really excited for the Athens guys (all the guys all 6…8…I don’t know how many of them) are gonna be hanging with J real soon. How cool is that for us here in Athens..I don’t mean to come down so hard on the sweet drummer for Dead Confederate, he can carry a beat and that’s more than I can do, he just needs a little SKOOLIN’……I trust he will grow into his drums someday….I was a little jealous that the whole Fog thing was being done in Europe, but I understand why…it puts J there for holidays….makes sense but the fact that he has a whole bunch of Athens behind him…WOW. I swear, I have been praying for years and also doing some long distance Reiki and I see now the fruits of my labor…I’m not kidding…I really think it helped. 15 or 16 years ago, I was setting the intention. (Oh, I dreamed my refrigerator told me J has a daughter on the way…that was a weird dream…a talking fridge..but thats for another post) and I see now, instead of coming to Athens…Athens sort of went the other way…Oh, well that works for me. No, I’m not crazy…..I’m just trying to be stupid funny….I have a friend over and we are both laughing to the point of almost wetting our pants over "my intentions" so take them as you will. I have to add ..about J and his bulldog love.(Athens icon, you know) ..ummm, I "babysat" a bulldog several months ago..in my house (it was a foster situation) and he lived with us for about three weeks….I had never spent anytime around a bulldog….I’m sort of into intelligent dogs, but this little thing, climbed onto the furniture like each piece was his own personal bed and farted all the time and SNORED…and made other sort of raspy noises all during his sleep..and drooled all over everything. I called my animal friend and said…"I can’t, you know, do this anymore" and she was like..perfect timing we found a home for him in Texas..of all places.
Oh, Kyle is a Gemini also……
Okay, I wasted time here and now must pick up my kids from the movies.
best youtube video for explaining how long distance reiki/prayer/intentions/magik work…..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by-7kkAu2Pg by-7kkAu2Pg ……. inertia "things like to stay where they are"….."cause they’re lazy" too cute and funny and the best for explaining physics to small ones.
I picked another random song from Dead Confederate…not their "hit" which seems to be more formula when it comes to the drums.
http://www.youtube.com/user/ifilmbands#p/search/9/3-6prfWAMnE”>http://www.youtube.com/user/ifilmbands# … -6prfWAMnE
this is a completely different song from the one I posted above, and also picked randomly…when I listen to it….and those cymbals start up again…I’m like…"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" for real….COME ON….
my idea of what it is…is…drummers think they can raise the intensity of a song by banging the hell out of the cymbals from the beginning to end of a song. Sort of fool the audience into thinking…Damn this song is F*cking intense..it doesn’t reach a crescendo, it’s so hot it, it f*cking blazes all the way through.. but I’ve been around the block a few times and I’m just not that easily fooled.
and poor John Bonham, I feel you brother, I’ve also had to live behind a Leo for many years, so I understand how one could feel compelled to off themselves even if apparently unintentionally. Blessed Gemini Soul, you were, life can be so hard for such kind and loving folks, and the world full of idiots, Well, as difficult as life gets ….we should just hang in ’cause it wont be long before we all take the big journey into the great unknown. My God, if I should die, suddenly and unintentionally, I do hope someone in my family will come to Freakscene and let everyone know I died, otherwise, y’all might think I just lost interest in all things related to J Mascis and that would be a shame. Although, no one would have to plow through my ri-f*cking-diculous posts anymore..that would probably be a relief for some. I came up with the word ri-f*ucking-diculous to describe my goats abilities to escape their fencing and my husbands demands, I hope everyone starts using it everyday like I do! Well, I think I’m done now….I had to edit…I wasn’t done…I didn’t want anyone to think I was down or my marriage in trouble…I’m pretty good and sitting right here next to my husband…explaining things to him…like who his friends are and such…..men have such trouble understanding friendship….us girls have to explain it to them and let them know what it is and how to do it.
What is "cock rock"? I have no idea, but I have a feeling I like it!!!!!!
I don’t know what it is about a cymbal but that much " loud tingy metal" it slays me.
"trensidoh" wrote:Sheet – we’re talking a 300 USD Paiste ride cymbal here….)I think those come with a life time guarantee…don’t they?
Oh, when I saw Dead Confederate open for Dinosaur Jr…I was freaking out in my mind…the cymbals were miked to high or something…it was actually hurting….not hurting my ears but hurting something else..like right in the area of my heart chakra, perhaps hurting my feelings, I don’t know.
I wanted to be the percussion police….snatch those cymbals away and make him listen to only Led Zeppelin IV for about one month straight…for penance…and then I would return the cymbals.
I don’t mind…bass guitar or a big old bass drum up my ass …but I don’t want cymbals up my ass all night long…it hurts.
I was turned on to a cool place on youtube called ifilmbands….y’all should check it out.
here, for instance is a show I was at…I can relive my cymbal crashing nightmare over and over again. I just picked this song randomly BTW…the cymbal is the same in most all of them. http://www.youtube.com/user/ifilmbands#p/u/58/hm6-WmMYAUU”>http://www.youtube.com/user/ifilmbands# … m6-WmMYAUU
lots of other cool bands to check out.
My husband brought home a "rock cock" from Colombia for me, I put it in our fish tank..as decor.
I really do understand this cymbal problem I am having is just a matter of taste.
Good taste over schlock….(just kidding, sort of)
Oh, great video of meat puppets backwater…sorry no caps ….i’m in the middle of cooking and in a hurry….the drummer for dead confederate is there on stage after the percussion police has taken his cymbals away and see he can carry a beat just fine without them. http://www.youtube.com/user/ifilmbands#p/search/11/Z2Xab2gCuUc”>http://www.youtube.com/user/ifilmbands# … 2Xab2gCuUc"King Tubby" wrote:having J do a solo Severed Lips, then as far as I’m concerned it’s a good thing!that songs always sounds great when done with just J and a guitar….imho.
Hey, Bob…I’ve been there with Freakscene…when you have to copy all your words because when you hit post it will ask you to log in again and if you haven’t copied your post, then you loose it. There is a way to click some button that allows you to "stay logged in"….
I don’t like you Warner Brothers….F you…..youtube muted my Halloween video ( I removed it this morning) because….I had only the beginning of when the levee breaks…the kick drum, the high hat, and the snare, you know…..you can’t copyright a drum beat…can you? I think…..the recording I used (Led Zep….complete collection) must have some sort of embedded something that is causing this to be rejected…otherwise, that’s a classic rock beat, how could they know it was Led Zeppelin? Hmmmm, damn you Warner Brothers…..I actually studied copyright law for one year in film school….isn’t like when food hits the ground….it’s like the 8 second rule, at least it is in my house…unless the dog licks it first. People always ask me "How come your kids are so healthy, never go to the doctor?"
Uhh, it’s because I let them eat off the floor….they are immune to EVERYTHING….except Warner Brothers.Yeah, yeah, I know, it’s the 3 second rule in most houses…(except my sisters house, she bleaches and disinfects everything…..that’s why her kids have eartubes and are on antibiotics all the time) it’s the 8 second rule in my house because both my husband and I are a little slow.
came back to edit…I’m not done with my rant….Hey Warner Brothers….you know back in 1985…..when you accused someone from ZBIGNIEW RYBCZYĆSKI’s post production crew of defacing your Basquiat, with sharpie….We were told we were no longer welcome at any of your events….we pleaded we didn’t do it.. and Zbig yelled and yelled at all 5 of us, calling us all kind of names…..Milosh Benedictovich confessed to me on his death bed that it was him…….and Milosh, I know you are resting in Peace, you made life so much fun, although I’m a little embarrassed about my past drug use, I have to say that was the best firing from a job I have ever had…Zbig called me into his office and said "Milosh says you are shooting dope….he told me you stick a needle in your arm as often as he sticks a dick up his ass, which is about every night. Your fired. Milosh died from AIDS in 1991, surrounded by people who love his drunken Polish ass to death. God Bless Milosh. ON second thought, I would hate for Zbigniew to be sued for whatever the cost of restoration was for that piece (although it’s been over 20 years)…..So I would like to state that the above story is a complete fabrication on my part…and we will never really know who added their own special black sharpie touch to that painting.
P freakin’ S….I know it’s not the amount of seconds it’s the amount of recognition.
I saw a great video of my long gong nightmare…I stopped to shoot video and lost my place up front but you can hear my gong starting at 1:30 and then 1:40 on me and my gong walk through….I love it….it’s here:I had two guys from video games….(I know, I know) my littlest was Link…from the Zelda games…I had an uptown Witch, a Japanese Lolita Maid (I know, I know) and a Mummy (stitched strips of cloth..fit like a glove)….I dressed in Orange and I played the "gong" in the marching band that made up Athens Georgia first ever Halloween parade. It was wet, it drizzled all day, but at least it was a warm sort of rain. We have video and photos to come. Athens rocks….that’s all I can say…after the parade, my kids were like "We love Athens" When I have some time, I’ll edit my video but …..I will throw up another video from a friend just so y’all can get an idea of what a great Halloween it was. I must say…..we are a town that knows how to party.

found a photo of me and my "gong"….I stopped for a few moments to shoot video. Thats me in the orange jacket…uhhh, holding a camera and a gong…hee…hee…I was one long gong nightmare.

Don’t stare at the sun….it’s dangerous. Happy Birthday…..
(I’ve had a few Scorpios tell me they have been tempted to look straight into the sun just because they were told that they can’t and they can’t stand to be told "NO")
Thanks MSB, for taking the time to post your review. Sounds like a great show.

."King Tubby" wrote:Despite my increasing feeling that the band needs to take a break and recharge after these past few years of constant touring, I have to say that they were as good as I’ve ever seen them last night. They’ve definitely settled into a deep groove, and J rarely — if ever, except when he’s getting ready to end a solo — looks off to his left, but he doesn’t have to, since Lou and Murph are locked in so damn tight. So glad to hear it. Makes me feel happy for the band (and the customers), although I still think I’m gonna watch the rest of this go down from a distance…your words are swoon "y" for the Gemini…..after finding Lou attractive this morning, taking lunch to my guy in a most romantic way and then coming back to Freakscene this afternoon and getting turned on by the words you chose to use in your review of the show….I have to agree with my Latina Scorpio friend..it’s probably best to refrain from writing on the computer after ingesting "cannabutter" cookies while ovulating.
I need to get back to Putting on Thomas the Train videos and peeling potatoes.
What a great photograph of Lou. I was telling my kids just a few days ago that their Father is like the poster child for what a "man" is. Jokingly, I said that a photograph of him should be included in the encyclopedia under the word "Man". We then decided, how fun it would would be if we got a photograph of Daddy on Wikipedia. We went to Wikipedia and they actually have a photograph of what they are calling a "man" and I had to laugh. That’s not the ideal image of a "man" in my opinion. Look at it….that’s not what a man looks like. Men are hairy….they have wonderfully hairy legs and bellies and should have a nice batch of hair on their chests so that one can nestle down in it. After seeing the photograph of Lou with his beard and his torn pants and his glasses that look darker in that photograph than they really are…playing music standing in front of the drums….I thought..what a man. Now, I’m thinking I would rather see that very photograph of Lou above on Wikipedia under the definition of "man" than even my handsome Leo husband. I apologize if any young ones are here and may be offended by my including the photograph that is now being shown on Wiki but I just wanted to make a point. Lou should continue to grow out his beard….Girl and I have already made our love for the beard known here. You decide. Anyway…great photograph Lou Barlow….in that photograph you are a top contender for the image that I hope replaces the one that they have now on Wiki.
Which image best defines Man:

October 14, 2009 at 8:05 pm in reply to: The astrology of Lou’s NPR moonchild "episode", I think. #136805I feel like supper is over and I’ve moved my plate forward, thrown my napkin on it and now am getting up and pushing in my chair. I’ve said my piece but….now a few days later…I started thinking about a few things.
One of those things is…I have been making extra money making very special foods for our local farmers market. I make food using ingredients I purchase from local growers, all organic….butternut squash empanadas, potato samosas, quince pastries, blueberry tarts, spinach triangles with yummy organic feta cheese and a "Georgia Baklava" using local nuts and honey I get right down the road. (yum, yum sounds good right) Now that the holidays are right around the corner…I’m starting to get calls for catering parties…which rocks because I have so many kids and Christmas gets expensive even for someone like me who doesn’t like to get caught up in "consumer fetishism". When it comes to "consumer fetishism", actions speak louder than words and my husband reminds me all the time that I am a very "wordy" person. YIkes, all that said…I have to admit…I am so over cooking right now….I can’t even stand to look at another butternut squash…and pecans, I’m starting to hate them with a passion. I had a woman on the phone with me yesterday and she was doing the talking thing, just like I like to do, saying "We just love everything you do….we promised our son when he came home at Thanksgiving we would have some of your stuff waiting for him" "Do you give out any recipes" and the whole time I was thinking…"OMG…this is what I sound like when I get on a talking jag….please just make her get off the phone with me" and I was feeling all of this and she is a good "paying customer". I said this morning that I don’t want to do it anymore…I can’t…peel another potato…clean another sink full of spinach covered with Georgia red dirt..I just can’t look at it.
So Tubby is correct…this Dinosaur Jr run has really just been a bit long….that’s probably it!Also, a few times in my life…really like only two or three, I have picked up an electric guitar, I was surprised by the weight, they are much heavier than acoustic ones….once out in Dan Dudleys Studio, I put an electic guitar on my body, with the strap and all…and I kept it there for about 15 minutes and it was so uncomfortable for me. This was without moving my arms to play any notes….I remember thinking….I couldn’t do this for an hour or more…and night after night after night. Lord help drummers as well…I’ve told the story here before but it’s a good one…John Bonham and I share the same birthday, and I actually can carry on some nice beats on the congas….so I was thinking…I bet I could learn to play the drums with a drum kit….and I could be really really good very fast. We have a wonderful drummer here in town…named Joe Ellison (love ya’ Joe) and a few times he tried to teach me some stuff….beats and crossovers…he would let us (myself and kids)sit on his lap and hold our hands until we got the right idea…he would do the pedal work…and I was blow away by how difficult it is. I could never make it through one song…not one whole song and hold a beat…no way…..not only is it very physical work but the mental part was the killer for me…I’m sure it gets better when you no longer have to "think" about what you are doing but I would never get to that point. I just wanted to learn to play one song….and after 60 seconds or so that was it….not fun for me anymore…I see bass players…shaking out arms all the time during shows…ouch!
I can’t imagine doing that night after freakin’ night…ARE YOU KIDDING ME…it’s almost insane. This is not an easy way to make a living…it might be an exciting way or an interesting way…but it’s not easy. Top that off with screwing with your circadian rhythm for months and years on end and eating food that is not cooked with love by anyone you know…and last but not least…dealing with a "bar" crowd. I can’t imagine having to sell my empanadas to folks who were drunk, yelling "WE WANT GUYABA PASTRIES" (I use to make those but I don’t anymore) and hurling water bottles at me. (I got that from looking at Noels blog with the photograph of J wrapping his electronics in plastic wrap…the blog said "to protect it from flying water bottles" I would cry…I so want to cry right now just thinking about it. I also hate hotel rooms but I think I’m the only one..my kids think they are the coolest thing in the whole world…My daughter Liliana says she wants to live in a hotel when she gets older…I hope she is thinking The Westin with a concierge and not thinking the Super 8. Of Course, I also don’t exspect J to be able to move as fast as he could when that Sludgefeast video was made…14 years ago, give or take but you know what I’m talking about when I say…..a little flat these days.I decided that I understand being tired….that things aren’t as easy as they seem and that I probably should have removed the telephone pole before attempting to remove the splinter.
October 13, 2009 at 9:55 am in reply to: The astrology of Lou’s NPR moonchild "episode", I think. #136804"King Tubby" wrote:Lou and J grew up on the hardcore scene (as did I), so ridiculous tempo changes and occasional "fuck you" attitudes to their audiences are in their blood. I totally get it. They’re certainly not hippies. That’s a good point Tubby…I really like how you can take your thoughts and boil them down into two or three sentences…well said….you know…I just ramble with my words….I aspire someday to consolidate. That said…
I think some gratitude is in order…Do you know how many musicians, good musicians…heck…great musicians are out in the world unable to make a good living off of playing music? They are still working hanging drywall or behind the counter at Kinko’s during the day..actually here in Athens mostly their wives are working 8 and 10 hour days so the bills can be paid on time..come on…..and imho, it’s by the Grace of God, or the kindness of the Universe, whatever you want to call it…. that these guys are able to make some good money right now doing what they are doing. Sure, there is ambition and I have no doubt that it takes a fair amount of that to really make things happen, self determination needs to reach up to grab the "flow of grace" for sure….call me a hippie but I would certainly be taking a little time out of my day to humble myself and be thankful. Cocky doesn’t cut it for me because when you live in the country like I do, you see what happens to cocky. Cocky gets culled to make room for the younger, stronger and better behaved cock every damn day. You can’t give a cock away around here and if he is real cocky, like pestering everybody, he is the first to go…. .. "Oh, go ahead and strut your stuff buddy ’cause your days are numbered" I’ll say it out loud on my way to the compost pile, go ahead little bird and run after folks with your aggression and just see where it gets you … I was never into hardcore music….I like metal, like Motorhead, you know…but not hardcore music. I was more into music like Van Morrison and Levon Helm…that kind of stuff. Groovy and laid back.
I did go to some hardcore shows while living in NYC in the ’80’s and I wasn’t paying $30 bucks to get in the door…you know what I mean?I sort of miss the old J and his guitar…..there is a video of J, I think it is one of my favorite videos of any Dinosaur JR song thats out there. OMG….it’s so good..and I’m going to post the link. When you watch it, Notice the eye contact, especially with George…he is playing but he is also taking the time to connect…he is looking this away and that away. They are all connecting. J is way out of his "hide- y hole" Both J and George are doing a lot of "teeth clenching" you know, that kind of grimace face. That look happens when you need to force your energy down into your lower chakras …that is where passion and strength are found. Now, I have already had a "Gemini Episode" and written too much crap but try and hang with me for just a few more moments. Think about hitting a baseball or tennis ball, if you are playing with passion..playing to win…you are going to have to push energy down into your gut to really get the power behind it. Watch a major league player get ready to hit a ball. That sort of clenching or grimacing is a sure sign that there is power and passion behind something. Take the time to do it right now…if you clench or grimace hard you can feel your second chakra, that tightening you feel in your lower belly, that is the chakra of power and passion. J used to play guitar from this chakra..and I tell you the crowd could pick up on that…you could feel it.
I would ask anyone who can to take the time to watch this…..this is why I fell in love with J and his guitar…The funny thing is….at one point during the song J almost seems like "he don’t know what the hell he doing" as they say around these parts. It doesn’t matter because it’s his song….and it is PERFECT and Lou Barlow, if you look at the shots of the crowd..no one is jumping around because they are too..slack-jawed from the onslaught of passion that is coming from J’s obvious love affair with his guitar. That’s it….what more do I need to say. Watch this video of Sludgefeast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnImVkzEzI8 rnImVkzEzI8That constant rocking from the hips that J is doing is connecting to that chakra as well, in fact, when you need to activate the second or third….rocking forward with your hips is like one of the first exercises that one learns. J is constantly pushing power in this video. AT 4:36 you find a wonderful tempo change…that goes over real well.
Now compare that video to one shot from the other night in Columbus, Ohio that was posted here on Freakscene you can watch it here again:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YElgs4Z5sb8&feature=player_embedded# YElgs4Z5 … _embedded#and I just have to say…"I Swear for Dog" there is not one single bit of eye contact between any of them. Nothing. No first, second or even third chakra activation. In fact, if you notice during J’s solo at (I forget the point, and Gosh knows I really don’t want to go back) but somewhere inside the early two minute mark, his head is bent forward at the neck and that is pushing power into the third eye chakra so he is now "thinking" about what he is doing instead of feeling it.
Now….I love this music…and I ask myself why am I being so critical, I’ll never be on the Dinosaur Jr. Christmas card list now for sure…but the reason why is…I don’t want to be berated for having a lack of passion…OKAY…okay. I’m calm now. In fact, someone commented on the lamness of the crowd in Columbus, Ohio…after watching that video….I again have to look up at the ceiling, but this time with my finger on my chin…while making the sound "hmmmmmmm". I feel sort of bad for dogging on Murph about the timing thing…because now I’m thinking it could be a problem with their fearless Sagittarius leader and a huge lack of passion. I am soooo just saying. I mean, Kudos to Lou, he is still trying to pull some passion out of this thing….I do notice the effort. I hope everyone in this band gets some down time soon and uses it to re-activate.
Hey…I love FARM…..it’s in heavy rotation………..I mean heavy-heavy around here.Had to edit…because Tubby and I posted at the same time and both included the words Motorhead, hippies and downtime in our posts…ha,ha that’s funny. What’s a dubhead..I will have to look that up. Oh, bummer, I must run out into the real world now and I’ll be gone all day. I’ll have to catch up later. Peace and incense…..
October 12, 2009 at 8:53 am in reply to: The astrology of Lou’s NPR moonchild "episode", I think. #136796I wanted to clarify, that I know certain songs have tempo changes ie: what’s the name of that song..oh,yeah, Feel the Pain and Plans and others..I understand that….but …not Kentucky Derby style tempo changes…I didn’t want anyone to ever get the idea that I didn’t understand what I was talking about. I know, Good Luck with that around here…..
