best wishes from San Fran, Javro. you’ve always had kind words for me– I haven’t forgotten!
have a wonderful day!
falafel!
lol. I have been out of the game so long, I thought someone was literally selling a pair of J’s boots.
well, I’m apparently alone on this, but if someone gave me a cd I didn’t want/like, I’d probably sell it too, if none of my friends wanted it. only I’d sell it at the used record store…and I know freaksceners shop at those.
I applaud you all for worrying that J is losing money here, but unless he decides to press all his live shows and make them officially (legally) available, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for people to buy them from (honest, low-overhead) private sellers as they become available. this guy doesn’t sound mean, and he doesn’t sound like he is auctioning off mountains of Dino material. he sounds like he’s using eBay the same way everyone else does– turning his trash into another person’s treasure, and making a few bucks.
also, I’d advise people to think carefully before accusing private sellers of cramping an artist’s success, or of infringing on various copyrights– I know that many of you support filesharing, and the argument could be made right back at you (though I’m certainly not taking that side, as I have both purchased bootlegs and swapped files in the past).
of course, if you receive a bootleg (via any contact, free or paid) that unexpectedly turns out to be a cdr, then by all means, you deserve to raise hell.
good to see a nice hot topic on freakscene; I’ve missed you all.
take care,
rosanice list, but they left out the worst one of all– women who work as living pelvic models for gynecology students. lying naked on a table, poked and prodded by amateurs for not-very-much money an hour. oh, sign me up.
personally, I’m choosing one love to tattoo across my chest.
it will probably be my boyfriend. but for Mattman, I could tattoo, say, my left thigh, or a knee or something.
happy birthday, Mantis. miss you! hope all your dreams are at your fingertips.
love,

thank you. your writing is lovely, as always.
saw that issue too; what a bunch of crap. I could think of at least seven guitarists, offhand, that were erroneously shafted.
like sg said…Joan Jett, but no J? what the fuck.
I remember checking the article to see who was responsible for compiling the list, and the credit went to the ‘editors at Rolling Stone’, exclusively. you know those magazine editors, always the most cultured arbiters of talent. even VH1 polls other musicians (albeit not the widest variety) to compile their ‘best of’ lists.
I just read an interview with PJ O’Rourke in which he explained that part of the reason he no longer writes for RS is that all the editors he liked have been fired or ‘let go.’ he also described RS as basically turning into Maxim magazine over the past few years

all-female Eminem cover group: Slim Lady. can I please.
also, my friend Todd and I used to do acoustic J covers as Mass Kiss.

rosayou guys are awesome for remembering my day.
thank you so much. especially those of you who emailed & messaged me. it meant a lot.
happy belateds to everyone I missed.
take care,
Rosahey there. rosa was a ‘no show’ because she was leaving to be in a wedding in New York.
actually, on those nights, she was packing, mentally preparing for a visit with her father, and trying to reconcile the fact that she is dating someone who lives 400 miles away.
she wanted to go to the Cobra Verde show, but was not in a good psychological state to be forcing her way through the hipsters. if I remember correctly, she spent the night drinking tea and crying. part of her thought that a concert would pull her out of her preoccupations, but part of her thought that loud noise and tight crowds were not a good cure for anxiety.
she did think of OSX and J fondly, though, especially when one of her best friends called her on the weekend and said ‘I heard J Mascis was in town and I thought of you, I’m sure you went, I heard it was great.’
thanks so much for sharing your pics, I really looked forward to seeing those. knew you’d come through, as always.
take care
rosap.s. cafe du nord really is beautiful and intimate; it’s my favorite bar (so far) in the city. plan to celebrate the birthday there this weekend

haha. indeed.
did you know that May is national masturbation month? you all better catch up, because it’s almost over.
it’s an OM symbol in the middle of a secular cross. it’s Sanskrit, not Asian.
Hey Allison,
I just heard about this the other night. Everyone in the Bay Area is pretty weirded-out, as you can imagine.
Always thought Spector was a little sketchy…those ever-present black glasses…the wacky wives….

That part about ‘Let it Be’ is interesting, too; I’m not much of a Beatles fan so I never heard about it.
I wish I could remember who said it, but I read an interview recently with some musician who said, about producers, something like ‘why pay someone to stand over you and tell you that you’re doing everything wrong?’ My theory is that all producers, whether compatible with recording artists or not, have some amount of freaky control issues. Like that saying about educators– ‘those who can’t do, teach.’ So maybe the Phil Spectors of the world are not too much different from the Suge Knights. Just all frustrated and controlling and waiting for opportunities to unleash the psychosis. I know that I had some teachers like that in high school.
Or maybe Spector’s innocent, and I’m talking out my ass.
*shrug*

RosaLou did it!
just kidding. but seriously. I am glad all flesh is intact; the machinery can be replaced over time. and the house is still functional…rain not landing on heads is a good thing.
would be interested in chipping in for the fan gift that everyone has been mentioning. someone, please keep me informed.
xo
