Pearl Jam- Eddie’s great-grandma Pearl was married to a Native American, who showed her how to make preserves with hallucinogens

Wu-Tang Clan- wu-tang is an ancient style of martial art from China

Righteous Brothers- there was a guy who used to listen to them perform (under a different name), who would always tell them "that’s righteous, brother!"

N’Sync- "cause when we sang together, man, we just clicked"

The Animals- Eric Burdon knew this crazy biker guy who would come around to the neighborhood every once in a while and tell crazy stories about being on the road. His name was Animal.

The Doors- via Aldous Huxley, via William Blake

I’m sure I’ll remember more later-

By the way, I laid down some crazy personal poetry earlier, and when I posted it, the bbs left-aligned the whole goddamn text. Any way to change that, or is the universe just trying to send me a message that my lyrical prowess is not prowly enough?

thanks

you look twice as good when we’re not together
twice as hot in colder weather
bigger eyes in a smaller room
maybe things ended a little too soon

Yeah, when Asheton played with them it was pretty incredible. It was so…weird to see J playing rhythm guitar, taking a side-car to someone else, ya know? Kinda like Madonna doing backup vocals. He was definitely enjoying himself though, and it was just wild to have six extra strings in there. At first I wondered how he would adjust (he seems to have a pretty healthy ego, at least when it comes to being band frontman), but it was fantastic. Pretty hard to replicate with words.

Dunno, just thought I’d throw that out there.

(H.L. Mencken)

Not true. Some of us don’t trust anyone And then there are suckers like me, who trust everyone and are very generous when it comes to doling out "the benefit of the doubt".

So yeah, my list of most influential:

1-Pearl Jam
2-Tori Amos (haven’t listened to her in a while, but definitely a big impact on my perception of voice, esp. in high school…this is a strange and scarred tale for me, as many of the people who made fun of the music I liked are now fans of hers)
3-Dinosaur Jr
4-the Doors
5-the Allman Brothers
6-Fiona Apple
7-Marilyn Manson
8-Diamanda Galas
9-Wu-Tang Clan
10-Flat Duo Jets (because their music is tied to so many different ‘genres’…after hearing the Jets, I started listening to much more country, jazz, oldies, garage, and blues)

Hey Tree- I don’t remember the name of the town in Virginia, but my spies are checking on it for me

Salami- Check out "Safari" by the Jets. It’s a good sampler of their work; lots of cover songs, and some originals, recorded from "previously unissued lo-fi cassettes" Dex’s first solo album, "Folk Songs", is also excellent. If you want, I can burn a cd for ya; just send a PM my way.

Pity that band broke up shortly after I saw them live. Hey, the same thing happened with Dino…I must have the ticket hand of band death or something….

Hey Salami,

Don’t sweat it. People like that are just projecting their insecurities onto others. Don’t let it pull ya back into junior high mode.

Lots of people are elitist like that when it comes to music. They want to define themselves by latching on to a clique that already exists, rather than following their own unique gut instincts. People tend to confuse "identity" with "image", which is unfortunate.

Personally, I see no reason to limit my own tastes, even though it occasionally makes me a target of other so-called fans. I love rockabilly, but sometimes the girls give me looks because I’m not covered with tattoos, and I don’t wear my hair in a Betty Page. And the indie kids will give me shit because I like, say Dinosaur Jr, but not Sebadoh, as if that were somehow a requirement and the two did not sound completely different. The list goes on and on.

But try not to let it get to you. YOU know what you like and don’t like, and you’re secure about that, so that gives you the upper hand in the long run. Just remember that these people don’t know you, and even if they did, they would probably still be pricks because of their obstinance. Also remember that, by being so snobbish, they’re missing out on lots of great music. And they’ll meet less girls than you because of it

Pearl Jam ’45, "Who Killed Rudolph"; one of the first singles issued through the fan club (which I never joined). I got it at a Rhino Records store in upstate NY that has long since closed. Paid $8 for it; saw it go for $70 on eBay.

Mike Watt double LP (see-through blue), "Ball Hog or Tugboat". Don’t know if this is really rare, but damn if it isn’t the coolest piece of vinyl I’ve ever seen. And of course, a great album. Got it in another record store that is now closed, in Bennington, VT.

Dinosaur, "Dinosaur" on tape. Yay! Some really cool guy on eBay sold it to me for $12. I was psyched, not only because all my other Dino (studio) albums are on tape, but also because it is "sans Jr".

Flat Duo Jets, "White Trees", tape. Second Jets album I bought; out of print. One of my favorite albums by far. Cool store in Virginia, outside of D.C. Everyone should listen to the Flat Duo Jets.

The Frogs, "Racially Yours", Amoeba Records, Berkeley. A lot of stores refused to carry this one; couldn’t even find it online anywhere.

Pearl Jam, "Eddie’s House". My sis got this bootleg tape for me…don’t remember where (sorry). A great, crappy recording of the guys goofing around at what sounds like a house party. Includes a great, crappy cover of a Van Halen’s "Runnin with the Devil".

Some of my favorites to play/sing–

Dinosaur Jr, "Can’t We Move This". I play it acoustically and really slow. I also capo it up about 7 or 8 frets or something, so I can do it in kinda a medium range…talk about a song that makes me cry when I sing it…One of my best recordings of myself is this cover. I was getting over a cold, but somehow it came out just right.

Reverend Horton Heat, "Unlucky in Love". This is kind of an uptempo rockabilly song; again, I slow it down, and it comes out completely different, almost haunting. The words are just so raw…"my first love left me all alone/ my second love cut me to the bone/ my third, fourth and fifth, lord, tell me up above/ why am I unlucky in love"

Fiona Apple, "A Mistake". One of the best for me; not only is it a fantastic and kickass song, but her range is really close to mine, so I can sing it strongly & comfortably. Took me forever to figure out on guitar, but well worth the effort.

Usher, "My Way". Dude. Yes, the teenybopper r&b guy. Such great lyrics, 4 chords, right on. Ditto for my "Baby One More Time" cover, which, by the way, can be seamlessly integrated with "Genie in a Bottle".

Songs I would love to learn–

Grant Lee Buffalo, "Lone Star Song"; Culture Club, "Do You Really Wanna Hurt Me; Marilyn Manson, "Great Big White World"; Madonna, "Secret".

No no no…I KNOW the explosives were in his shoes, but was he WEARING them when he was trying to light them? That’s what I meant. Was he hunched over, ya know? Cause I can barely touch my toes, especially sitting down.

I know it’s an old argument, but really, did you ever hear this amount of shiznit with the advent of the cassette player/recorder?

Which reminds me, I gotta get my turntable fixed…

Tom, how do you think the two sides could appease each other? They seem pretty diametrically opposed.

If everything were encrypted, sales of Philips burners (and other Philips products that are incompatible with encrypted cds) will go down, right? And on the other side, the RIAA will not only have a monopoly on the market, but will probably see fit to start suing the pants off of consumers….Napster was just the start….what about private websites, built by music FANS, that include midis or mp3s as part of a soundtrack? Or what about sites that provide song lyrics and tabs? Are they going to start sending secret agents onto the buses and subways of America, to entrap kids who are listening to homemade mixes on their headphones?

More importantly, are recording contracts going to change at all to accomodate share-ware? Will they add an optional clause for the artist, so the artist can determine whether s/he will have the option of taking legal action against fans who share? Can artists sign such a clause while retaining their copyrights?

quote:
The far-reaching DMCA, enacted in 1998, bans any attempt to circumvent copyright protections. Critics complain that the law puts too much power in the hands of media publishers, denying consumers the right to use products bought for personal consumption in whatever ways they see fit.

Yeah, and who was responsible for that Act in the first place? A bunch of doddering old men on Capitol Hill who A) don’t invest the larger part of their paychecks in cds & records, B) don’t know enough about the technology in question, and C) haven’t considered the larger implications on consumer rights in general.

Technology has its tentacles in entertainment, science, and communications. It’s important for people to realize that it is a phenomenon that must be regulated carefully, because if you mutilate one tentacle, you still have all these other tentacles to deal with, and they’re all part of the same beast.

As far as consumer rights– well, I’ve said before that I’m all for artists’ rights. I support musicians by buying their albums and going to their shows. If I heard that some of them didn’t want me to bootleg or share, I would respect that, just cause I’m a nice girl that way. But ultimately, they ARE pushing a product, and who is to decide how I use that product in my home and in my life? Is the RIAA going to break into my house and turn down my stereo because the neighbors can hear?

I know I’m giving more questions than answers. But really, I don’t have any answers at this point….I’ll keep thinking on it though
